IZ'E I LEWIS MGMULLEN, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNOCKDOWN BOX OR CRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Application filed December 30, 1907. Serial No. 08,611.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIs MoMULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Boxes or Crates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in knock-down boxes or crates and the object in view is to produce a device of this nature which, when not in use, may be reduced to a small compass thereby economizing in storage room.
The invention consists further in the provision of a knock-down box or crate having means whereby the same may be held'in a folded or opened out relation.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the box open. Fig. 2 is a view of the box closed. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view longitudinally through the box opened. Fig. 4 is a similar view through the box closed. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the box 0 en, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the box 0 osed.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bottom of a box or a crate which has short side pieces B extending at right angles to said bottom, and C is a short flange projecting from the upper face of the bottom and is continuous with the flange or beading C upon the side pieces B.
D-D designate the end pieces of the box or crate which are hinged to the upper sur face of the bottom adjacent to the flange C a suflicient distance therefrom so that, when the ends are opened up at right angles to the bottom, the outer face of each end will be in contact with the inner edges of the flange O and also against the inner edges of box is folded.
the beading C upon the strips B and serves to hold the end pieces from swinging farther outward than said flanges. The free swinging edge of .each of said end pieces has a tongue E.
FF designate two of the side wings of the box which are hinged one to each strip B in such a manner that, when said side wings are opened out at right angles to the bottom, their opposite faces will be flush with the opposite faces of the strips B. Each of said wings F has a marginal beading or flange F about three of its edges and the ends of the flanges upon each wing terminate a slight distance from the inner hinged end of the wing and each end is beveled or inclined as at F and adapted to form a continuous beading or flange with the flanges C and C when the The top of the box, designated by letter H, has two flanges H and H projecting from each face of the top adjacent to its ends, the spaces intermediate the flanges H and H being adapted to receive the tongue E formed upon the ends D when the box is opened up and the opposite longitudinal edges of the cover have the shoulders K over which the flanged portions of the wings F are adapted to fit, as shown clearly in the sectional view of the box opened out. It will be noted upon reference to the drawings that the two wings F have apertures N formed therein and also that the top has a transverse aperture 0 which, when the cover is adjusted in place and the box opened, is in registration with the apertures N and adapted to receive a locking rod T having a head T at one end and its other end threaded to receive an elongated cylindrical nut T whereby the lock and box may be held in an opened up relation. Said wings F, it will be noted, also have apertures R formed transversely therethrough and so formed that, when the sides are turned down in a plane parallel with the bottom of the box, they will be in registration with each other and adapted to receive the same locking rod.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that, by the provision of a knock-down box embodying the features of my invention, a simple and eflicient means is afforded whereby, when the box is opened out for use, the joints are thoroughly protected against foreign matter entering the box or the contents of the latter escaping about the ends or sides thereof and, by the provision of the locking means, the parts may be held securely toby means of the locking rod in the manner set forth.
What I claim to be new is A knock-down box vhaving a bottom with opposite longitudinal flanges at right angles thereto, the sides hinged to said flanges and having their free longitudinal edges rabbeted, ribs projecting from the inner faces of said bottom, flanges and sides, end pieces hinged to the bottom and each having its free swinging edge rabbeted and its outer 1 throw limited by said ribs, a cover having its longitudinal edges rabbeted and adapted to receive the rabbeted portions of said side, the under surface of said top having transverse grooves engaged by the rabbeted edges of the ends of the box, a locking rod passing through registering apertures in the sides and top and having a threaded portion, a cylindrical nut with threaded opening adapted to receive the threaded end of said rod, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses;
LEl/VIS MOMULLEN Witnesses:
P. M. SWANGER, J AMES MOFEELY.
