-ing tumbler, 4 the key and 5 the knobs, Said iul 1m rovemcnts in Locks; and I do declare John A. CURRY, OF KEY WEST, FLORIDA.
PATENT OFFICE.
LOOK.
Application filed October 3,
To all 'iuhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. CURRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Key est, in the county of Monroe and State of Florida, have invented certain new and usethe folowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifier tion.
My invention relates to locks and'has for its object to provide a novel device of this class to be used on doors and the like.
A further object of my invention is to'provide a lock which is particularly simple in its construction and designed with a view to With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction of'the sliding bolt tumbler and the arrangement providing for the operation of the tumbler by means of the key; and my invention also consists in the novel construction which provides for dis-engaging the tumbler from the bolt by a sliding key.
My invention also consists in certain other novel features of construction and'in combination of parts which will he first fully described andafterwards specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through thelock easing. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse seotionsLview taken on line 2 -2 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. Clis a horizontal seclionai'view through the casing above the lmlt. I
Like numerals ol' rhl'erence indicate the same'parts throughout the several figures in which,
I indicates the casing, 2 the bolt, 3 thcslidknobs 5 carried on a spindle (5 of usual form which spindle passes entirely through the casing carrying within the casing a small drum 7, secured to said drum in any convenient manner and as shown in Figs. I and 3 is a flexible link 3 which is connected to the boil. 2. Suitable guides !l are provided for the bolt 3 while a coil spring H) is arranged l behind the bolt 2 normally holding said bolt in on extended or lm-king position as shown l Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908. 190a emu No. 895,780.
in Fig. 1. The tumbler 3 is bifurcated as shown in Fig. 2 comprising bile two exten-' sions 11 and 12, said tumbler straddling the bolt 2, which bolt is provided with grooves 13 and 14 on each side thereof to receive theextensions 1 l and 12 of the tumbler 3. Suitable guides 15 are provided on the casing 1 within which the tumbler 3 slides. Aooil spring 16 above the tumbler 3 is arranged and exerts a downward pressure on the tumbler 3 in order to hold the same in engagement with the bolt as shown in Fig. 1.
An opening 17 is provided on the bottom edge of the casing 1 directly below the extension 11 of the tumbler 3, while the groove 14 (Fig. 3) in the bolt- 2 is elongated. n 'slot 18 is also provided in one face of the casing: directly in front of the tumbler 3 so that a knob or projection can be )rovidcd on said tumbler to extend through the casing for manipulation of the tumbler without'the use of" the key; thus the lock can be used in the capacity of a latch.
liaving thus fully described the several )arts of my invention its operation is as follows: The normal position of the bolt and tumbler is shown in Fig. 1. In order to illustrate the bolt out of its locking position the key 4 is inserted in the opening 17 on the bottom edge of the'casing and forced rip-'- wardly entering the groove 14 in the bolt 2 and engaging the lower end of the extension 11 of the tumbler 3, thus forcing said tumbier out of engagement with the bolt 2 as shown in Fig. 2. When the tumbler is in this position either of the knobs 5 can be turned, which through the medium of the flexible link 8 draws the bolt inwardly and out of lockin osition. it is of course (6- 9C dent that the eys can be made in a vast number of forms and shapes so that each lock will require a different key in order to oporate the same. When utilizing the look as a latch the tumbler 3 can be provided with a.
small knob or projection extending through theeasing, by raising the knob or projection the tumbler will be carried out of engagement with the bolt 2 and the bolt 2 then operated by one of the knobs 5. The elongated groove 14 in the bolt 2 ailows the bolt.
to slide while the key is still within-the slot as is clearly evident from Fig. 3,. Having thus'fully described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States ls,- l.- A lockcomprising a slidingbol-t, a slid- News ms-saw. no...
10 straddls said bolt and constructed to be g um-cal out 0f eugagen'mnt with said lmlt by 1 means of a sliding key, substantially as de- -f scribed.
in testimony whereof, I allix my signature,
