' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
application filed April 16, 1908. Serial No. 427,294.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N. CRAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at South N o'rwalk, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a-new and useful Shipping-Package, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provid a simple and inexpensive flexible shipping package and closure therefor which may be produced so cheaply that money can be saved by using them Once and throwing them away instead of paying the return express charges.
As mynovelpackage is flexible and may be made perfectly air-tight and water-tight it is adapted for general use as a storage vessel and for the shipment of all kinds of products and is especially adapted for the shipment of food products, as, for example, oysters. It is of course well understood that oysters are shipped long distances in various kinds of. packages which are usually emptied and shipped back without cleaning. The packages naturally reach their return destination in so foul a condition that it is exceedingly diflicult to make them sanitary. This difl'iculty is wholly avoided, a perfectly sanitary carrier is provided and the expense of shipment is materially reduced by the use of my novel carriers.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of my novel carrier as when filled and closed ready for shipment; "Fig. 2 a vertical 7 transverse section on the line 2-2 in Fi 1;
Fig. 3 a view on a reducedscale of the b ank from which the body of the'carrier is formed; and'Flgs. 4 and 5 are views respectively of rectangular and round bottoms, either of which may be used with the body blank.
10 denotes the body blank and 11 and 1-2 difier'ent forms of bottom blanks, either of ,Which may be used with the body blank;
These blanks are made of cloth which may be rendered thoroughly air-tight and watertight by saturation'in any suitable water proofing mixture, as for example a mixture of paraffin and resin. The body blank is provided with two relatively large flaps indismall flaps, indicated by 14, which form the tops of the ends, flaps 14 being triangular in shape. The blanks are preferably secured together by stitching. by 15 are stitched to the edges indicated by 16, then the edges 16 are stitched togetherin continuation of one of the former seams.
The ends of the blank, indicated by 17, are
stitched-together and the bottom, indicated by 18, is secured to the edges of one of the bottom blanks, indicated by 19 and 20. I then preferably turn the carrier and double seam it all around.
My novel closure comprises a rod which maybe of'wood or metal and is indicated by 21, two side strips preferably made of wood which are rectangular in cross section and are indicated by 22, and a plurality of spring clips which may be made of wire and are indicated by 23. In closing a carrier, the tops of the sides are folded over the rod, as indicated in Fig. 2, then the side strips are placed in position on op osite sides of the four plies formed by the fo ding over of the top of the sides, the side strips lying close to the rod, and then a plurality of clips, in the present instance two, are pressedover the side pieces and down until they rest upon the roll formed by the rod and the folded-over top of theedge secured to the edge of the bottom, and having four upwardly extending flaps two of which are triangular in form while the other two are larger and have practically parallel edges, the side edges of said flaps being secured together, and means for closing the ends of the larger flaps.
In testimony whereof I'afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
