Be it known that I, EDWARD HANAK, residing at New Orleans in the parish of Or- .leans and State. ofLouisiana, have invented a new and Improved Portable Stacking-Elevator, of which the following is a specification.
improvements in portable elevators, seeks to provide an improved construction of elevator of the type referred to, more especially adapted for use in ware houses, for elevating and storing sugar, rice, cotton-seed meal and other commodities, in sacks, barrels orpacka es, which can be readily moved to any part of the ware house at will, and which can be uickly adjusted for delivering goods to the ile'sired place or places.
In its generic nature, my invention comprehends an improved construction of elevator, in which is included a hinged and adiustable frame section for sustaining the endess carrier frame at different vertical planes and capable of being graduallyextended or shortened relatively to the different varying vertical adjustments of-the carrier frame.
In its more com lete nature, my invention embodies a hinge carrier frame, adapted to be swung to different'vertical planes, a foldable frame section for supportlng the upper or deliver end of the carrier frame, and certain detai s of construction and peculiar com- I bination of parts, all of which will .be hereinafter fully described, specifically set out in the appended claims 'and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of the form of machine shown in Fig. 2, parts thereof being in section, and thecai'rier frame and the extensible supporting frame being shown in the de ressed position in dotted lines. In the preferred construction of my invention and as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, the same com rises a base or main frame formed of the horlzontal and longitudinally dis osed beams 1-1, and a rear cross beam 2,sai base This invention, which generally relates to' frame being mounted on a air of front and rear caster rollers 33, as s own. The base frame also includes supplemental horizontal timbers 10-10 that are braced to the side and end beams 1 and 2, which latter, together with the timbers 10-10 form the su port for the driving mechanism, which, as shown, is in the nature of an electric motor 5, whose driving belt 6 takes around a drive pulley 7, mounted on a'shaft 8, transversely journaled in suitable bearings 9-9 on the side beams 11-11 near the lower ends thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
' The carrier frame is pivotally mounted at its lower endupon a cross shaft a journaled at the opposite ends in bearing boxes 1) secured upon the under side of the side beams 11, see Fi 1, by reference towhich and to Fig. 2 it be also noticed that the said shaft a carries a pulley 12, over which takes an endless carrier belt 13 which also passes over the pulley 14 on the shaft 14*, adjustably mounted on slotted brackets 1515 secured on the upper ends of the side beams 11-11 in which the journal boxes 1616 for theshaft 14* are slidably held by means of adjustingscrews 1717, as shown. The carrier belt 13 has transverse cleats that form lifting members 13 and it also has its upper P01171011. held to travel over the horizontal guide rollers 18, transversely mounted on the side beams 11.
Motion is imparted to the endless belt 13 by means of a pinion 19 on the drive shaft 8 that meshes with a gear 19 on a countershaft 20 journaled in bearings 21 on the side beams 11 and which, at one end has a sprocket wheel 21 around which takes an endless sprocket chain 22 which passes over the large sprocket wheel 23 on the corresponding end of the shaft 14, which transmits motion to the endless carrier, and to take up unnecessary fleXure of the chain 22 it is passed over a tightener or side pulley 24 on the guide beam, as shown.

the lower ends 26 of which have T-sha ed ribs 27 on their inner faces, on which side the T-shaped guide flanges 28 formed on the quired rigidity and effect a regular slide movement thereof on the coacting members 26, are joined by a cross bar 30, as shown. Each of the frame members 29 has its upper end pivotally joined with the adjacent side beams 11-11 of the carrier frame as at 31 and each of the lower members 26 is hinged at 32 to the pendent brackets 33-33 on the side base timbers 1-1.
At the upper end the members 26 carry guide sheaves 34 and at a suitable point below the saidsheaves, bearings 26 -26 are provided for the cross shaft 35 which carries a winding drum 36 and a lar e gear 37 at one end, said members 26-26 also having bearings 38 for a powershaft 39 that carries a small gear 40 that meshes with the gear 37, and the shaft 39 has its ends projected and formed to receive winding cranks 41, as shown.
42-42 designate a pair of liftin ropes which are connected at one end to t eir respective Wll1(ll":,' lrums 36 and pass over the sheaves 34-34 connected with the cross member 30 that joins the upper telescopic frame members, the said rope drive devices being so arranged that by manipulating the cranks '41, the hinged carrier frame or support can be raised or lowered and at the same time swung upon its pivots to suit the re-' quirements for lowering or stacking.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is believed the complete construction, manner of operation and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent.
It will be noticed that in the form of my invention so far described, the u per or delivery face of the stacker is at all times free from obstructions or projections, thereby providing for a free and uninterrupted conveying of the sacks or other packages up through the delivery end of the frame and, furthermore, the elevating or lowering of the said frame can be conveniently and expeditiously effected to suit the various heights of the bulks or packages being stored without retarding the action of the conveyor or elevating means and at. the same time permit ting the stacking of the material to a greater height than is possible where the sustaining frame for the upper end of the carrier frame extends above the said carrier. Furthermore, by reason of connecting the several parts in the manner shown and described, at no time is it necessary to disconnect any of the members of the entire machine, which remain at their initially connected position as the working or stacking progresses, the telescopic members constantly adjusting themselves as the power is applied at the crank handles.
In Fi 4, I have illustrated a somewhat modified form of my invention which embodies the same general characteristics of what is shown in the preferred form, but in .carrier frame during the operation of conveying the material and such means consists of a shaft 53 mounted on the side beams 11-11 near their lower end, drums 54-54 mounted on the shaft 53 with which drive ropes 55 connect, the sheaves 56 on the upper end of the uprights 50 over which the said ropes 55 pass, the latter having their free ends secured to the side beams 11 of the carrier frame near the upper end.
To detachably sustain the uprights 50 at their upright position, two brace rods 58 are pivotally connected to each of the bearings 50, near their u per end, the lower end 58 of the said rods eing detachably joined with apertured ears 59 on the base frame By loosening the rods 58, the carrier frame can be lowered to the required position to pass under obstructions or through door ways.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a further modificatidn of my invention and which is also em.- bodied in the broad or generic form of my invention as disclosed in Fig. 1.
In the present modified construction, however, the telescopic supporting sections comprise the lower members 60-60 fixedly secured to the base frame of the machine and provided with vertical grooves 60 on their mner faces, which extend substantially the full length and the said lower sections 60 extend 11 to a supplemental horizontally disposed fi'ame portion 62which extends forwardly and forms the brace for the endless carrier frame, which latter, in the present form of my invention, is made of two sections, the lower or fixedly held portion 64 and the upper portion 65 that is hinged to the part 64 at a point just in line with the supplemental frame 62 and the said hin ed portion 65 is adapted, when swung bac to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 to rest flatwise upon the supplemental framing.
To provide for gradually lowering the upper or hinged carrier frame portion 65, as well as for sustaining it at its different adjustments, the supporting members 66 are pivotally connected at themupper end to the carrier frame 65 and they support friction rollers 68 at their lower ends which travel-in the grooves 60 in the members 60 and by reason thereof the said roller bearings form differential pivotal connections for the supporting member 66.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. In a portable elevator of'the characterdescribed, the combination with a base frame, the said frame including opposite side bars, an endless carrier frame pivotally mounted on the front ends of the side bars, a pair of supports for the upper end of the carrier frame, each of the said supports consisting of'telescopic members, one of which is pivotally connected to swing outwardly as the carrier frame is lowered, the upper ones of said supports being pivotally connected to the upper end of the carrier frame, brackets carrying pulleys connecting the 111))81 ends of the lower telescopic members, ift cables connected to the lower ends of the upper telescopic members, a winding drum mounted on the lower telescopic members over which theends of the lift cables wind, and means also mounted on the lower telescopic members for winding up the drum.

As an improvement in portable elevators, the combination with the main frame, said frame including lower horizontal side bars 1 and upper side bars 62, the said side bars 62 formmg a supplemental supporting frame; of an endless carrier and a frame therefor, the said carrier frame comprising a lower and an upper section, the latter being hingedly connected to the lower section, the lower section being pivotally mounted at its lower end in the outer extremities of the side bars 11 and having'its upper ends supportable on the outer end of the supplemental supporting frame, driving means on the main frame connected with the lower end of the endless carrier, mechanism for supporting and adjusting the upper or hinged end of the carrier, which comprises two sets of lower and upper telescopic members, the upper one for each set of members having a vertically slidable its co-acting lower member, the said upper members having pivotally connected to the upper end of the uppermost portion of the carrier frame, and means mountedon the lower telescopic members and the main frame for raising the upper telescopic members, and said means including lift cables connected to the fulcrum ends of the said upper telescopic members, as set forth.
