Description

PATPNTED SEPT. 1, 19o.
y G.- WEGBLIN. APPARATUS PoR MAKING LAMPBLAGK.
lAPPLIGA'I'QI FILED JAH. 2, 1908.
In renier ffffff`w rUlll'llill) SIATES PATENT (,)lifliIUlil APPARATUS FOR MAKING LAMPBLACK.
Application filed January 2,
To all uil/.om 'it inrtg/ cori-Urn.:
Bo it known that l` (,lo'iuif'inno livecams, a citizen of thc lilinpii'i` ol (nrinany, residing at lilalscheurcn, ntf-.ar (ningun-oiethc--lthne,
in the lhnpire ot (..hrinan' v, have invented a new and useful A|n aratus for Making lmnp-- black, of which thc following is a specification. 4
1n thc apparatus for 1nmilitar-turing lainpblack described in in v U. S. Patent No. 688,215, dated. December 3%, `l Sill] means arc )rovided for disturbing thcsuriacc of tho liquid tar or other hydrocarbon in the distillation-vessel, a continuons current ol l'rcsh liquid being su plied to this vessel at a point near the lever and. compressed air being passed upwards through the liquid in the said vessel. This apparatus required special means for producing compressed air, which may be inconvenient or expensive.
In the improved apparatus described. in my subsequent' U. S. atent No. 807,646, dated December 19,'1905, other means are provided for stirring the liquid hydrocarbon contained jn the distillation-vessel, an ngitator being employed, so as to prevent the fon mation oflcoke in the up er strata of the liquid that are exposed to t ie radiant heat of the burning gases in the combustion-cham-I ber aboveV the vessel. This apparatus presents the defect, that both. the cleaning ot the agitator and the tightening of its shaft in the smiling-boxes are difficult and tedious.
My invention relates to an improvei'nent iu thea aratus,` whereby the latter is not only Simp iflied, as in opposition to the first apparatus above mentioned, but also rendered more easy to operate than the second apparat-us above mentioned,
The improvement consists in circulating the liquid hydrocarbon through the distilla- -tiolnvessel by means of a puin I will now roceod to descri )e my invcn tion with re erence to the accompanying drawing, in whichu I Figure l. is a vertical longitudii'ial section through the improved. n iparatus, and Fig. 2 is a hifirizontal section` t'niuigh thcsaine on the broken linel A--A in. Fig. l.
Similar characters of reference rotor to similar arts iu both views.
'l io apparatus essentially com prises a distillation-vessel a, a combustion-chainher b and 'a pum c. The distillation -vcssel a, which 'may )e of any known construction, is partly filled with the liquid hydroifarlmn,

that is inirmluccd from thc side through a supply lulu' l. 'l'hc coinlnlstionwhainlier l olA unf,Y suitalihA vonrdrlu-iion is l alt-d above thc distillntiou-vcssol i and is prcl'crably lupl al. a. dist ani-o thcrclroni, so as to l'orin au` annular openingA l2, through 'which thc air is prriuitlcd to cuter from without in the direction ol' thc arrows. ,ln tlu` drawing lour rings 2, l -n'e assumed to he inserted between tho flange 2% of the ilistiNation-vessel (L and thc flange 4 ot tho combustion-chainber b and four bolts 5 with nuts are passed thrinigh those rii'igs and flanges for connecting together the parts (i. and l. Where so preferred, thc distance between thc two flanges 3 and -4 may be varied lor regulating the supplyof' the air as is required For the combustion. rings may bc replaced by 4known means which l need .not describe here. (lr the annular air-inlct 'l2 may be replaced by the lateral door g described in the second patent mentioned above. The pump c may be of any known Aonstruction, for example it may be accntriingal pump or a similar ump. Its suction-conncction G is connected) with the bottoni 7 ol the vcsselu by means of a suc ti on pipo X, while the delivery connection 9 of the pump c is connected with the side of the vessel (L at a point a little beneath the level of' the liquid by means ola pipe l0. Pre/fen ably a sieve 11 is provided in the vessel a, above its bottoni 7 for the separation of foreign matters, such as small coke pieces or the like.
l.)uring the operation of the a iparatus the gases arising from the liquid llyi'lrocarbon during the distillation collect in thel chamber b and when they moet the a-ir entering through the annular inlet l2 they burn to form soot or lampblack, which will be deposited in chambers (not shown) provided for that that purpose. The radiant heat from the combustion clients a heating of the liquid in the vessel e. The pump c sucks in liquid from thc bottom 7 of thevesscl (L and "Aivers it to the latter near the level through the npc l0, so that the liquid constantly circu- 'ating uniformly heated and the formation of' coke at the upper surface of the liquid is thoroughly prevented.
It will he seen, that the method of stirring the liquid hydrocarbon is simplified and that the apparatus is quite safe and docs not require any attention.
The apparatus may be varied in many reln this case the four bolts 5 and four spects without de arting from the spirit of my invention. T e circulation of the liquid may take the reverse path.
l1 claim:
1. In an apparatus for producing lam black from tar or other carbonaceous su stances, the combination with a distillationvessel adapted to receive liqiglid hydrocarbon,
of a combustion-chamber 9 ove said distillation-vessel and communicating therewith, it bein(T ada ted to distil the liquid exclusively by t ie radliant heat of the flame and to roduce the lampblack, inlets in said com ustion-chamber for admitting air, and a pump connected by pipes with `said distillationvcssel for constantly circulatingr the liquid through same, so as to prevent the formation of coke at the upper surface of the liquid.
2. In an apparatus for producing lampvin said distillation-vessel for separating any foreign matters from the li uid. y
