Electric Stop-Motions for Motors and Signals for the Same, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to electric stop-motions for motors and signals for the same.
This invention is applicable to any engine v or motor driven by the pressure of a fluid and capable. of being stopped by cutting ofi the supply of fluid, as by a gate or valve.
It is to shut off the flow of steam to a steam-engine or of water to a water-wheel by the closing of an electric circuit when the engine or wheel approaches too near a dangerous rate of speed. In these cases the current is furnished by a storage battery, and there is no means other than actual test of. knowing whether the battery is in working order and it has many times happened that where the engineer has attempted to operate a manual circuit-closer with which such circuits are commonly provided he has found that there was no current and that therefore the auto- {natic stop-motion was inoperative and useess;
One object of this invention is to furnish a constant signal, while the motor is running, which shall indicate at once to the person in charge of the motor that the current is operative and ready for' use, and of course, the absence of the signal would in itself be a signal 4 to indicate an absence of current.
In carrying out my invention, I have arranged upon the shaft of a centrifugal governor a dynamo which rotates therewith and furnishes a constant current when the motor cluded an electric coil, as asolenoid or electro-magnet which is'arranged to operate a shut-ofi, as a valve in the pipe which conducts the steam, water or other fluid to the Specification of Letters Patent.

The centrifugal governor shown in the accompanying drawing maybe the usual governor of a steam engine or other motor or may be a supplementary governor driven from any suitable part of the motor.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown in central longitudinal section the case of a governor and a dynamo, the armature of which is mounted on the shaft of the governor also a central vertical section of a part of the pipe which conducts the motive power to the motor; a shut-ofl valve; also in elevation a solenoid arranged in an open circuit with amanually-operated circuit-closer and in another open circuit closed by the movement'of the governor.

A feed-pipe C of any suitable construction and provided with a valve-seat c, conducts the motive power to the engine-proper, as from the boiler to the cylinder of a steamengine. A suitable valve D is arranged to slide in an enlargement or valve-case c of the pipe 0 and is normally held open by the pressure of the fluid, as steam, passing through said feed-pipe in the direction indicated by the arrows.
A suitable dynamo E of any usual construction is mounted upon the governorshaft b concentrically therewith and revolves .therewith atall times when. the motor is in operation. One pole of the dynamo is connected to the solenoid F by the connected by the wire f to a conductingin e secured in the metallic or conducting rame e of said dynamo, and another wire 9 push-button G or other normally open c1rcuitcloser, said push-button being connected by a wire 9 to another wire f which connects the other end of said solenoid to a contact-screw sup- @erreeiicn in Letters Patent No. 897,350.

When the governor has attained such a speed as to bring its movable head 6 or the flange b which projects from said movable head into contact with the screw f, a circuit is closed from the dynamo through the wire f, the solenoid F, the wire f contact-screw f movable governor-head b and through the governor-frame and dynamo-frame, pin 6 and wire f to the dynamo.
When the circuit-closer G is closed by hand, the current passes from the dynamo to, the solenoid by the wire f and from the solenoid by the wiresf 9 pin 6 and wire f back to the dynamo. The closing of either of these circuits excites the solenoid and pushes its core d which is a continuation of or rigidly connected to the stem of the valve D in such a manner as to crowd said valve upon its seat 0 and shut-off the motive fluid. The valve D may be opened by hand or by the pressure of the motive fluid and will be kept open by said pressure when neither of the normally open circuits above described is closed.
A signal which I have represented as an incandescent light H is supported in any convenient place where its absence would be noted by the person in charge of the motor and is connected by wires h 7L to opposite poles of the dynamo and is normally in circuit, so that this light should be glowing constantly and when it fails it indicates that its own circuit is broken or that there is some trouble with the dynamo or with its driving mechanism, as that the belting or gearing is broken.
The improvement herein described will prevent much less and damage to persons and property heretofore caused by the bursting of fly-wheels due to excessive speed of the same, an occurrence so common that companies have been formed which make a specialty of insuring against such accidents.
I claim as my invention p 1. The combination of a centrifugal governor, a dynamo-electric machine, mounted of the case in the Patent O ffice.
' [snan] on said governor and rotating therewith, a shut-ofl, a normally open electric circuit, in which said dynamo is included, means for operating said shut-oil included in said circuit, and means operated by said governor for closing said circuit when said governor attains a predetermined speed.
2. The combination of a centrifugal governor, a dynamo-electric machine, mounted on said governor and rotating therewith, a shut-oii, a normally open electric circuit, in which said dynamo is included, said shut-oil being provided with a stem of magnetizable material, a solenoid also inclosed in said circuit and surrounding said stem, and means operated by said governor for closing said circuit to operate said shut-off when said governor attains a predetermined speed.
3. The combination of a centrifugal governor, a dynamo-electric machine, mounted on said governor and rotating therewith, a s'hut-ofi, a normally open electric circuit, in which said dynamo is included, means for operating said shut-off included in said circuit, and means operated by said governor for closing said circuit when said governor attains a predetermined speed, a closed electric circuit in which said dynamo is also included, and a signal arranged in said closed circuit. 7
4. The combination of a centrifugal governor, a dynamo-electric machine, mounted on said governor and rotating therewith, a
shut-oil, a normally open electric circuit, in which said dynamo is included, means for operating said shut-off included in said circuit, and means operated by said governor for closing said circuit when said governor attains a predetermined speed, a .closed electric circuit in which said. dynamo is also included, and an incandescent lamp arranged in said closed circuit.
