Description
No. 897,309. PATENTED SEPT. l, 1908. S. J. SILL.
VULGANIZING MANDREL FOR RUBBER HOSE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. s, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J. SILL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HERBERT H. HEWITT, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
VULGANIZING-MANDBEL ron RUBBER HOSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J SILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizing-Mandrels for Rubber Hose, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speclfication.
The present invention has for its obj eat to provide an improved construction of mandrel for sustaining sections of rubber hose during the vulcanizing operation.
The object of the invention is to provide a mandrel of simple and effective construction which will determine with exactness the length of the hose section and which will also give the desired square finish to the ends of the hose section.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved mandrel with a hose section thereon and with its removablecap detached therefrom. Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section and with the removable cap in position. Fig. 3 is a detail section on line 33 of F ig. 4. Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The body 1 of the mandrel is ahollow tube of iron or steel and at or adjacent one of its ends is fixed a collar 2, this collar being held in position as for example by a rivet 3 that passes through the collar and through the mandrel. The op osite end of the mandrel is formed with a s 0t 4 extending inward to some distance from the end of the mandrel, this slot 4 being formed with an angular portion 5 and a short reverted portion 6. The mandrel is of suitable size to fit within the section of hose 7 that Will be placed upon the mandrel and over the slotted end of the mandrel will he slipped a detachable retaining sleeve or collar 9 that is provided with the inwardly projecting pin 10 adapted to enter the slotted end of the mandrel. It will thus be seen that the sleeve or collar 9 is detachably connected to the mandrel by a bent joint which will enable the cap to be readily laced in osition for use and easily withrawn an which will securely retain the hose in position upon the mandrel during the vulcanizing operation.
When the mandrel is to be used, a section of hose 7 will be slipped over the mandrel until the end of the hose bears against the fixed collar 2. The detachable collar 9 will then be slipped over the slotted end of the mandrel, the pin 10 passing along the slot 4 and by means of the collar 9 the hose will be slightly compressed so as to permit the pin 10 to pass by the angular portion 5 into the reverted portion 6 of the s ot, the elasticity of the hose serving to hold the pin 10 in the outer end of the slot 6. The pressure of the collars 2 and 9 upon the ends of the hose section will give to these ends a square shape and will prevent the escape of the rubber during the vulcanizing o eration. The slot in the end of the mandre and the pin 10 in the detachable cap 9 will determine with exactness the length of the hose section. Thus for example, if in making sections for air brake hose the specifications call for sections 22 inches long, then the distance between the inner ends of the collars 2 and 9 (when the pin 10 of the collar 9 is at the end of the slot 6) will be exactly 22 inches. After the hose has been vulcanized, and the wrapper removed therefrom, the collar 9 can be easily withdrawn by forcing it inward slightly and turning it upon the mandrel so as to permit the pin 10 to pass from the open end of the slot 4.
It is obvious that the exact details set forth may be varied Without departure from the essentials of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A vulcanizing mandrel for rubber hose comprising a cylindrical body having a fixed collar at one end and having at its opposite end a collar removably encircling said mapldrel and detachably interlocked therewit 2. A vulcanizing mandrel for rubber hose comprising a body having a fixed collar at one end and having a detachable collar at its opposite end, said detachable collar being connected by a bayonet joint to the body of the mandrel.
