Description

PATENTED AUG. 25, 1908(- J. A. IOAHILL. STOCK RELEASER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 19, 1907.
Witnesses attain:
Chasm. o'lTS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. OAHILL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM II. POOLE, OF RIVERTON, NEW JERSEY.
STOCK-RELEASER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPn A. CAHILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Releasers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stock releasers adapted to be used in stables, the object of which is to provide a device by means of which stock can be released from the outside of the building in order that they may escape in case of lire.
Another object of my invention is to provide a stock releaser which is exceedingly simple and. cheap in construction and one that can be readily secured to the head of the stall or manger, so as to secure the halter ring or strap in place and yet be capable of readily releasing the same without any danger of the ring or strap becoming caught.
Afurther object of my invention is to connect a coil spring to the locking member of the device for normally holding the same closed which is of such strength that it will hold the halter or strap therein, whereby it will be impossible for it to be detached by the animal pulling on the halter.
Another object of my invention is to provide very novel means for operating the locking member.
These objects are obtained by the novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1, is a perspectiveview of my improved stock releaser, showing the application of the same. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view through the same.
In the drawings, A, indicates a plate provided with openings through which screws or bolts are adapted to pass for securing the plate against the head of a stall or manger as desired. The plates being provided with a casing B, on its face, adjacent its upper edge, which is rectangular in cross sections, and in which is slidably mounted a shank C, which is provided with a head D, having a cut out portion D, forming a ring receiving opening and two outwardly projecting members of different lengths, the shorter member of which is provided with a guide lug D adapted to slide in a longitudinal groove formed in the inner face of a Z-bar F, which is secured to the face of the plate by bolts as clearly shown. The longer member, which is designated by the letter D is adapted to engage the ring receiving end of the Z-ba'r F, and is normally held in engagement by a coil spring Gr, the ends of which are connected to eyes which are secured to the Z-bar F, and head D, respectively.
A cut out portion is formed in the head forming a space for the spring to work in, whereby it will be protected against being disturbed by the animal. A shoulder D is formed on the shank adapted to engage the edge of the outer wall of the casing B, which is cut away, as clearly shown, so as to allow the head to slide between the walls of same, whereby the head can be withdrawn from behind the ring receiving end of the Z-bar, so as to bring the ring receiving opening to one side of the same, and by placing the halter strap or ring in the opening and releasing the head it will be carried behind the Z-bar and be securely locked.
The outer end of the shank C, is a ertured in which is secured a ring I, to whic 1 is connected a chain J, adapted to pass out through an opening found in the wall of the building and to be connected to a lever K, mounted in a box L, which is closed by a door. It will be seen that by pulling 011 this lever the head will be Withdrawn from behind the angle bar carrying with it the halter ring or strap so as to release the animal and it will be, of course, understood that this lever can be placed anywhere desired so as to enable the head to be operated from a safe distance.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very novel releasing device which is so constructed that the ring or halter is sure to be released When the lever is pulled on.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. A stock releaser comprising a plate provided with a casing, a Z-bar secured to said plate in alinement with said casing, having a ring receiving member, said ring receiving member being provided with a groove, a shank slidably mounted in said casing provided with a head having a cut out portion, a lug formed on said head working in said groove, a spring connecting said head to 1 formed on said headworkinginsaid groove,a
said Z-bar and means connected to the shank for the purpose of operating the same.
2. A stock reieaser comprising a plate car- 5 rying a casing, a Z-bar secured on said plate in alinement with said casing, having a ring receiving member, said ring receiving member being provided with a groove in its inner face, a shank siidably mounted in the casing 5 provided with a head having a cut out portion adapted to receive a halter ring or strap, a lug spring connecting the head to said Z-bar, a chain carried by said shank and a lever connected to said chain, for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
