ATTACHMENT FOR GAS FIXTURES.
APPLICATION TILED MAY 11,1908.
fli iizemes; I I b i r 7Z @IZ 0 v v I ISRAEL KATES, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
I ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-FIXTURES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Application filed May 11, 1908. Serial No. 432,253.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL KATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for GasFix tures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas fixtures, and particularly to the class of such fixtures having means operated by the jet-pipe or bracket-pipe to control the flow of gas to the gas-jet.
The object of the invention is to provide in gas fixtures, (especially such as are used by silver-smiths, metal workers, jewelers and similar workmen for heating and blow ing purposes) an attachment by means of which an ordinary key of a gas-cock or valve may be given every movement of a gas-pipe swinging from such fixture, so as to open and close the cock as well as to vary the flow of gas to the jet, and to increase or diminish the size of the flame and its power, without operating the key independently.
It is well known that various devices have been provided for the purpose of turning on and 0H gas by turning a swinging gas-pipe, while other devices have been em ployed to vary the size and power of the blaze by turning a swinging gas-pipe to operate a plug or valve adjacent to the usual gas-cock, but it is necessary to open and close said cock by operating its key inde pendently for turning the gas on or off. It is to overcome the objections and disadvantages ofsuch devices that this invention is intended.
The present invention consists of a plate, bar, or other suitable device adapted to be connected to a swinging gas-pipe or pipes that are turnable in an ordinary gas-bracket or fixture, said device being applicable to the key of ordinary gas-cocks or valves so as to turn said key in unison with the said pipe, in consequence of which the gas is turned on and off without operating the said key independently, and the size and power of the jet or blaze is varied as de sired.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure -1 is a side elevation showing the position of the parts when the gas is on full. Fig. 2 is a top view showing the position of the parts when the size and power of the gas is reduced, the dotted lines indicating various positions to which the gas-pipe may be turned in either direction .to effect partial or complete closure of the gas-cock. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a blank from which the device forming the subject of this invention is shaped. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device.
The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
An ordinary gas-bracket 1 is secured to the wall 2 in the usual manner, and has the usual gas-cock or valve 8, which is provided with a stem or key 4. A gas-pipe 5 is connected to the bracket 1 in the usual way so that it may be swung or turned in the bracket, there being no valve, cook or plug at the point of said pivot connection.
The device for imparting the movement of the pipe 5 to the key 4, so that the said pipe and key may be turned in unison is preferably made in one piece and consists of an open collar 6 adapted to fit the pipe 5, and be retained thereon by a set-screw7, a plate 8 having a slot 9 for the key 4, and an arm 10 connecting the collar and the plate. The device may be applied to any gas-fixture of the character described, whether such fixture has one or more arms or pivoted pipes, by springing the collar 6 over the pipe and slipping the plate onto the key.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In gas fixtures having the usual key and swinging pipe, a device carried by the pipe and forming a connection between it and the key for turning the latter with every movement of the pipe.
2. In gas fixtures having the usual key and swinging pipe, an arm carried and o erated by the pipe and having a slot for t 1e key, said arm being adapted to turn the key in unison with the pipe.
3. In gas fixtures having the usual cock and swinging pipe, an attachment for working the cock-key in unison with the pipe,
comprising an arm connected at one end with the pipe and at the other end with the key.
4. In gas fixtures having the usual cock and swinging pipe, an attachment for working the cock-key in unison with the pipe, comprising a collar fitting the pipe, a plate having a slot for the key, and an arm conthe collar and the plate for turning the key 10 necting the collar and the key. in unison with the pipe.
5'. The combination, with a gas fixture In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand having the usual cock-key, and1 a pivoted or in the presence of two witnesses. 5 swinging pi e, of a collar ac a ted to be clamped on the pipe forward oi the pivot ISRAEL KATES' point of the pipe, a slotted plate fitting the Witnesses: key, and an arm extending downwardly and J. Ross COLI-IOUN, rearwardly from the pipe and connecting WM. E. VALK, Jr.
