HENRY W. ORIOHTON, OF YORK, N. Y.
HOOP FOR EXHIBITION PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Application filed October 1, 1907. Serial No. 395,355.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. CRIoHToN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoo s for Exhibition Purposes, of which the fo lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to hoops such as are used in hoop rolling exhibitions in which the operator throws the hoop outwardly and imparts a rotary motion to the hoop causing it to change its direction.
The object of my invention is to produce a hoop of this character which will be so formd that various odd movements will be caused by the rotation when the hoop strikes the ground.
In the drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation part y in section of a hoop embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and
. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The hoop consists of a circular body 1, on which is preferably fprovided a concave peripheral groove 2, ormed between a p ra ity of flanges 3 and 4 on which latter the hoop is adapted to roll, either on both simultaneously, or when slanting, it will ride on one rim only.
The feature of this invention resides in disposing a weight upon the hoop preferably at a point within the concave portion of the hoop so that when the hoop is thrown outwardly by the operator and given a swift rotation the weight on the hoop will interfere with the ordinarily perfect motion of the hoop and when the latter strikes the floor, the hoo instead of rolling along smoothly on the cor, will be caused to jump, and perform peculiar movements, resembling the actions of an intoxicated person. These movements may be varied so that odd results will be obtained. This results from the hoop being weighted at a oint eccentric to the center of rotation so t at instead of the hoop revolving in a-perfect circle it moves in an oval, its rotation being affected more or less by the point at which the hoop first strikes the floor.
In the specific device shown in the drawings, I have attached a metal plate 5 which may be made of heavy metal such as lead, in a recess 6 somewhat below the base of the groove 2 and the plate is held in place by pins 7 which pass through the hoop and the metal plate. In disposing the weighted late as is herein shown the best results are ad and the weight is in the proper position and will not interfere with the surface contact of the hoop.
Having described my invention, what I claim is,
A hoop recessed on the outer part of its rim and having a weight secured in the recess, said weight extending only part way around said rim, thereby unbalancing the hoo substantially as described.
Signed this 13th day of September, 1907.
. H. W. CRICHTON.
