a Application filed November 2, 1914. Serial No. 869,851.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. RICHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rayne, in the parish of Acadia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and ceived that the action of the gage wheel 7 J useful Improvements in Harrows, of which upon the upper flange 6-may be operatively I the following is a specification, reference regulated; In'order to maintain the membeing had to the accompanying drawings. ber'lO in its varying adjusted positions, I
This invention relates to certain improvedispose therethrough the clamping member ments in barrows, and an object of the inven- 11 herein disclosed as a conventional set tion is to provide a novel and improved descrew adapted'to coact with the arm 8 in vice wherein the ground engaging members a conventional manner. of the harrow are caused to travel in a The annular member 5 is operatively tied circular path as the device is drawn over the or connected with the hub plate I through ground. the medium of the radiating spokes 12 The invention consists in the details of formed of angle iron and secured to the construction and in the combination and arlower'fiange 14 of the member 5 and such rangement of the several parts of my imspokes 12 are provided longitudinally there proved harrow whereby certain important of with the spaced openings 15 positioned advantages are attained and the device is in close proximity to the upstanding flange rendered simpler, less expensive and other- 16 of the spokes and through which are wise more convenient and advantageous for adapted to be directed the shanks 17 of the i use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth. ground engaging members 18, as is believed The novel features of the invention will to be self-evident. The baseflange 19 of be carefully defined in the appended claim. the annular member 5 is also provided with In order that my invention may be the spaced openings 20 positioned in close better understood, I will now proceed to deproximity to the vertical portion 21 thereof, scribe the same with reference to the acandthrough which are adapted to be procompanying drawings, wherein jected the shanks 22 of the additional ground Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a harrow engaging members 23. By having the constructed in accordance with an embodiground engaging members 18 and 23 arment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse ranged as herein described, I have found vertical sectional view taken through Fig. in actual practice that the ground over which i 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary my improved harrow is drawn is effectively view in perspective of one of the spoke treated. The extremity of the beam 1 opmembers herein included. posite that provided with the engaging As disclosed in the accompanying drawmeans 2 is provided with a stub shaft 24 on ings, 1 denotes a beam provided at one exwhich is mounted the'wheel 25 which is tremity with the means 2 whereby draft adapted to ride upon theupper flange 6, as rigging may be suitably engaged in order is believed to be fully set forth in the accomthat the device may be drawn over the panying drawings. ground, and disposed vertically through the From the foregoing description it is beam at a predetermined point intermediate thought to be obvious that a harrow conthereof is a shaft 3 around which is adapted structed in accordance with my invention to rotate the hub plate 4. Surrounding the is of an extremely simple and comparatively hub plate 4 and in spaced relation thereto is inexpensive nature, and is particularly well the annular member 5 substantially Z-shape adapted for use by reason of the convenience in cross section, with the upper flange of and facility with which it may be assembled which is adapted to contact the gage wheel and by reason of the elfectivenesswithwhich 7 mounted on the outer extremity of the it performs its functions, and it will also be 105. arm 8 operatively engaged as indicated at obvious that my invention is susceptible of 9 with a side face of the beam 1. I have some change and modification-without mafound in practice that it is particularly adterial departure from the principles and vantageous to have the draft portion of the spirit thereof and for this reason I do not 0' wheel 7 oval in cross section, as it is believed to beclearly shown in the drawings forming a part hereof. The arm 8 has adjustably mounted thereon the member 10 of a predetermined weight whereby it will be perwish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown of my invention in practice.
I claim:
A harrow of the class described comprising a beam, a Vertically disposed shaft carried thereby, a hub plate rotatably mounted upon the shaft, an annular 'member surrounding the hub plate and in spaced relation thereto, said annular member being substantially Z- shape in cross section, spokes radiating from the hub plate and operatively engaged with the base flange of the annular member, each of said spokes being substantially L-shape in cross section and provided with longitudinally spaced perforations in the base flange in close proximity to the upstanding flange, the base flange of the annular member being also provided with spaced perforations in Copies of this patent may be obtained for close proximity to the vertical portion thereof, a wheel operatively supported by one extremity of the beam and adapted to contact with the upper flange of the annular member, an arm operatively engaged with the beam, a wheel mounted upon said arm and adapted to travel upon the upper flange of the annular member, a weighted member adjustably supported upon the arm, and ground engaging members engaged with the annular member and the spokes and disposed through the openings therein.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
