UNITED .STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT M.` HENRY'AND WILLIAMHESTER, oF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA; SAID 'BESTER ASsIGNoR, BY -MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, To SAID HENRY.
. HEAD 41m FAeEws'rE-Anmn.
'Tallwh'om it may concern: v I .Be it known/.thatwehRoBERT M. HENRY' and WILLIAM HsTER, of-` Indiana olis, county of Marion, and State of IndianaRIave 5 invented a certain new land useful Head and Face Steamer; and We do hereby declare. that the following is a full; clear, and exact v description thereof, reference bhein had to the accompanying drawings, in W ichlike 1o .letters refer tolike parts. j
The object of this invention is to provide means for sup steam for a e'rson to 'breathe' vin com matlon with air. diseases it is desirable. that the patient 15 breathe air saturada@ or mixed with'steam, 'and the b road mechanical idea'con'sists in a hoodadapted to.' extend over the' head and l beyond the face of the patient through which, w preferably from the rear, steam is intro- `2o uced, and a curtain made of porous matesuspended from /the hood in front`of the patient s face, so thatV the lowerjend bf the curtain will rest upon the clothing of thepa- Ntient Vand furnish afchamber about the pa- 25 tients face where the air enters through the porous curtain andJnay commingle with.the stiainthat entersthrou'gh the hood. Without the curtain the steam Would/'escapejnto 'the atmosphere and .with a non-porous cur- 30 Atainalir could not well reach the steam insufficent uantity. .e of Y' 'Y Anot er featureof the invention consists the means for treatin the' scalp with steam. In connection-Wit .35cated` steam -is 'referably used. -Also the device provides eated alr as -Well as steam and in connectionwith the steam. f 1 f The nature of the invention will be un'derstood from the 'accompanying drawings an 40 Ithe following descrliptlon and In the drawings 1 're l-is aI sidexele'v'atioh of the device 1n position for treatin a pa- 'tient, the patient bein represente in a i chair, a' portion of the evice being broken awa Figl 2 is`a plan or top' view of the 'h Fig. 3 is a. rear elevation of thehood.
Fig. 4`is acentral rvertical section of 'the upv per artof the steam-chest and-the telescopmg bes mounted on the upper end thereof.
' '50 vF' 5 isa sectionfon detail 10 represen a chair-and 11 a patient, while 12 represents the-wall of a'room 5'.' in which a as' jet 13-is mounted. From the spd'sttnn of Letterqratent. Appuaeonma July so, 190s. serie No. 210.51m.

. of the steam chest Upon said heating box I6 a water tank' 18 is secured into Whic .water is introduced through the funnel J9. When desired, and usually, medicine is com- I bined with the water that is introduced into 50 the\tank 18." v
20 is a door in the side of the steam chest through which the parts just described are accessible to the operator.
Fromv the tank 18 a 'pe 21 leads to the 35 stationary expansion tu e 22 that is secured in connection with-the plate 23, extending transversely of the steam chest 17 near its upper end. 1 'A hot air pipe 24 leads from the heatin l similar y secured to the plate 23.
The two pipes 22 and 25'are,parallel and near each other and the pipes 26 are telesoo'pically mounted in connection with lthe pi es 22 and 25, said pipes 26 moving verti- 75 c y through o enings in the top of the iste am chestan surrounding the pipes 22 and 25. Said pipes 26 leadto the ood 27. This hood is divided longitudinally into two f parts, the :u per andJOWer IpartS, as shown 30 1n Fig. 3, an they are hinge together at 28,. and at their rear ends the? are provided with an arm hole that is close by a cap 29. The Idiameter of the hood is somewhat' greater than the diameter of the head of thepatien so that the atient inserts the bac of hls head in the ont end vof the hood and rests the back `of the head uv on a cushion 30 shown by dotted lines in ig. 1. Thereis a projection 31 from the upper art of the hood '9g that projects over and beyon the face of the patient. Acurtain 32 is placed over the forward portion of the hood so as to envelop thehd' -bust of thev patient, .solthat the steam or hot air cannot scapeyaround the-edges of the 95 `curtain and the curtain hold 'the steam and hot air ibout the face and head ofthe patient. The curtain?. ismade. of cloth or other Vcrous material so that air can pass through the meshes therein and comm with the steamand heated air Withint e curtain and be mixed there and be breathed by the patient. As'stated above, the steam may be medicated according to the nature of th e'disease. v f
' The hood isyertically adjustable 'by means -of the racksf40 on the tubes 26 that/are engaged by the gear wheels 41 and 42,- res tively, said gear wheels being mounte on Et a tue 14-leads lto a burner 1 5within the plate 4:3, 011x top ofthe steam-chest 17, and 111.
box 16 to the expansion pipe 25 70 one ofsaid gears being driven by a finger Wheel 44. In this way the device is adjustable to patients of varying heights.
The expansion tubes 22 and 25 are made larger than the tubes 21 and 24 so that the steam and hot air will expand and not be directed immediately and directly against the head of the atient. Likewise the hood is provided witi perforations 5() on the upper side above the head of the patient in order to temper the steam and air as it comes in contact with the head. These perforations 50 are covered b the curtain 32 so that they air from the outs'idermust ass through both the curtain and ther per orations 50. lWhile treating the scalp, the operator `can extend his arm into the hood and rub the scalp.
- The chief value of the device, however, lies 1n Correction. n nLetters. Patent No. 896,538.
its ability tol' prepare properly medicated and-steamed air for breathing, and the deismade to do this by reason of the addi' tion of the curtain 32 that is sufficiently porous to .admit air and supply the necessary oxygen. It furnishes a chamber about the face for the mingling of these gases that is not air tight', yet it affords a sufficient' rotection against the escape "of the heate `air or steam into the atmosphere.
While cloth is'preferably used in the curtain 32, still We do not Wish to be limitedto any particular kindl of porous or perforated or fibrous material.
- Fresh air inlet openings in the tubes' 26 are provided and closed by the doors or plates 60. With these We are enabled to introduce atmospheric airv into-y either tube 26 to -mix with t that it prevents the steam and holds`it suspended.-
What We claim as .ourinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hood adapted to surround the head of a person with a projection forward lfrom the upper part thereof to a pointbeyond vand from condensing [slaan] j j e hot air or steam as desired or to the. extent desired. One advantage* of thisv is Y signed and seaied'tbis 20th day f october, A. 11,1908.
ward end of said hood so-as to form a chamber in front of and about the face of the perin front ofv the head Aand 'face of the person",n when the device is in place, a curtain'made of porous material .suspended from the for! son, and means for introducing vapor into A the chamber thus formed.
2.
