Description

PATENTED AUG. 18, 1908. P. A. POLK. COVER FASTENING MEANS FOR USE ON WASHING MACHINES.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 9, 1907.
ITNESSES I INVENTOI? ZM fi b. FETENAFULK- 6%6awW W A TTORNEYS' PETER A. FOLK, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
COVER-FASTENING MEANS FOR USE ON WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed May 9, 1907. Serial No. 372,650.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER A. FOLK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of I/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Fastening Means for Use on Washing-Machines and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in cover fastening means for use on washing machines and the like and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 an end elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on about the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section on about line ll of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a stand comprising end frames A having ball bearings B for the trunnions C and O of the revolving drum D. These end frames A are connected below the drum D by brace bars A which are crossed at the middle and secured at such point by a rivet A On one of the end frames A, I mount a wringer support E which projects upwardly above the bearings for the drum and preferably above the drum and has its top bar E adapted for connection of a wringer in the operation of the invention.
The drum D has its trunnions O and O mounted in the ball bearings B and one of the trunnions is provided at its end with a wheel F having a handle F by which it may be turned. This drum has the end plates D and the cylindrical portion D the latter being provided with the interior longitudinal ribs D and D The ribs D operate as rub bers in washing the clothing and the rib D is made wider than the ribs D so it will project to a greater eXtent into the cylindrical drum and operate to turn and change the position of the clothing being washed. I prefer to form the ribs D and D by creasing the metal of which the rim D is composed inwardly, as best shown in Fig. 3, so the ribs will be integral with the body of the rim and will also be of double thickness whereby they are given suflicient strength to operate as described and also form braces for strengthening the drum longitudinally.
A suitable opening D is provided in the drum for the introduction of the clothing and in which the water may be poured and this opening is closed when desired by acap G having a suitable packing G of rubber or other suitable material and held in place by a fastener. The cap is provided on its under side with ribs Gr coinciding with the ribs on the interior of the rim of the drum. The fastener for the cap comprises a pair of rods H threaded at their adjacent ends H for the turn-buckle H and having their other ends hooked at H to engage on opposite sides of the opening D as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing.
The drum D is provided with an opening I closed by a sliding plate I, for the discharge of water and it also has an air valve at J.
In 0 eration the machine will wash any fabric ffom the finest lace to the heaviest of clothing without tangling, tearing, or otherwise injuring them. When the clothing and water are placed in the machine and the latter is revolved the water and the clothing will not revolve with the machine but will remain in the bottom of the drum where it will be thoroughly rubbed and agitated, as desired.
A suitable fastening is provided for holding the drum from turning when putting in and removing clothing. This is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as a latch K pivoted at K and moving at its other end into and out of engagement at K with the drum.
I claim 1. A machine substantially as described comprising a stand having bearings, a drum having an opening, a cap for closing said opening, and a fastening extending over said cap and comprising rods threaded at their adjacent ends and hooked at their other or outer ends for engagement with the drum on opposite sides of the opening, and a turnbuckle connecting the adjacent threaded ends of the said rods, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine substantially as described the combination with the drum having an opening, of a cap for closing said opening, and a fastening for said cap having rods extending over the cap and a turn-buckle connecting the adjacent ends of said rods, substantially as set forth.
PETER A. FOLK.
