WILLIAM HARVEY MARSHALL, OF NEW PARIS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES H. MARSHALL, OF NEW PARIS, OHIO.
CEMENT B RIAL-VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 16, 1908. Serial No. 421,460.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H, MAR- SHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Paris, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cement Burial- Vaults; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in-. vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cement burial vaults.
The principal object of the invention is the production of simple and efficient operating means for automatically locking the lid or cover in position and which cannot be operated to release the lid or cover.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a vault constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken'on line 33 of Fig. 2, and, Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment illustrated, a vault constructed in accordance with the invention essentially comprises side and end pieces 1 and 2 respectively, a bottom 3 and a lid or cover 4.
In carrying out the invention, the side ieces are grooved at opposite side edges and in their inner faces near opposite ends throughout the length and width of the in the upper side edges of the side pieces being preferably of somewhat greater depth than those of the lower or bottom side edges and ends, the purpose of which will be disclosed.
In practice the bottom 3 is formed at opposite side edges and ends with tongues 6 designed to fit in the grooves in the bottom edges of the side and end pieces, the end pieces 2 being also formed at opposite ends with vertically extending tongues 7 designed to fit in the grooves in the inner faces and near the ends of the side pieces.
By employing the construction above desides in scribed it will be evident that the parts when once assembled are securely held in position.
The side ieces 1 of the vault are also rovided with ongitudinally s aced series 0 upright reinforcing bars 8 t e upper ends of which extend or project into the grooves in the upper edges of the same. The side pieces which are made of concrete or other sultable material may be further strengthened by a series of vertically spaced longitudinally extending reinforcing rods 9 which mayor may not be connected with said bars 8- as may be desired.
The cover of the vault which is also made of concrete or analogous material and is preferably in one continuous piece is also strengthened by a series of longitudinally spaced transversely extending metallic reinforcing bars 10 near opposite ends of which are preferably attached eye bolts 11, the eyes of which project slightly above the cover and are adapted to be engaged by suitable means during the operation of lowering the cover into the grave. These eye bolts also add further strength to the cover. I
A particular feature of the invention rethe provision of means for automatically locking the cover in position. As shown, this means comprises upright spring arms 12, a pair of which are attached at their lower ends to opposite faces of the upper projecting end of each of the bars 8, the extreme upper ends of said arms terminating in downwardly inclined engaging hooks 13 designed to engage oppositely extending upwardly inclined catches 14, formed in the heads near the lower ends of depending arms 15, attached to the reinforcing bars 10 in position to project into the ooves in the ,upper edges of the side pieces 0 the vault to position the cover thereon.
The lower ends of the heads of the depending arms 15 are produced beyond the engaging portions 14 and terminate in'sharp V- shaped portions 16 which easily spread or force a art the upper ends of the spring arm 13 durmg the operation of placing the cover in position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without re uiring a more extended explanation.
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters-Patent is 1. A sectional vault comprising side pieces formed in their upper side edges with grooves, reinforcing bars extending transversely through the side pieces, the upper ends of said bars projecting into said. grooves, a pair of spring arms provided with hook portions attached to op osite faces of the projecting end of each 0 the reinforcing bars, and a cover provided with depending arms adapted to enter the grooves of the side pieces, the lower ends of said arms provided with catch portions adapted to be engaged by the hook portions of t e spring arms.
2. A sectional vault comprising side pieces for med in their upper edges with grooves, reinforcing bars extending transversely through the side pieces, the upper ends of said bars projecting into said grooves, a pair of spring arms provided at their upper ends with hook portions, attached to opposite faces of the projecting end of each of said reinforcing bars, a cover, reinforcing bars extending transversely through the cover, and
, formed in their upper edges with grooves,
reinforcing bars extending transversely through the side pieces, the upper ends of said bars projecting into said grooves, a pair of spring arms provided at their upper ends with hook portions, attached to opposite faces of the projecting end of each of said reinforcing bars, a cover, reinforcing bars extending transversely through the cover, and arms depending from said lastmentioned reinforoing bars in position to enter the grooves of the s1de pieces, said arms having catch portions adapted to be engaged by the hook portions of the spring arms, and with V- shaped portions below their catch portions.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
