HOOF-TRIMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed November 4, 1907. Serial No. 400,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JERRY D. DE OELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Collins, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Hoof-Trimmer, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoof trimmers or nippers and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive tool of this character, the construction and relative disposition of the several parts of which is such as to materially increase the leverage and thus render the device more efficient in operation.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
Further objects and advantages will ap pear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hoof trimmer constructed in accordance with my invention showing the pivoted jaws in open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jaws in closed position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the jaws partly open.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved implement forming the subject matter of the present invention includes co-acting members having reduced shanks 5 and 6, said members being pivotally united at 7 and each provided with a jaw 8 having a flat surface 9 for engagement with a cutting blade 10.
The blades 10 are secured in position on the flat surface of the jaws 8 by screws or similar fastening devices 11, one of said blades being provided with an opening 12, the walls of which are inclined or beveled for engagement with the head of an adjusting screw 13 whereby the angle or inclination of said blade may be varied at will.
Pivotally mounted at 14 on the lower ends of the shanks 5 and 6 are operating levers 15 each having one end thereof extended beyond the pivot 14 and thence extended inwardly between the shanks 5 and 6 and pro vided with an angularly disposed ear or lug 16. The angular extensions 16 of the operating levers are pivotally'connected with the shanks 5 and 6 by means of links 17 one end of each of which is pivoted at 18 to the adj acent'shank of one of the pivoted members, while the opposite end thereof is pivoted at 19 to the angular extension or lug of the op posite operatingv lever.
Secured to one or both of the operating levers 15, by a screw or similar fastening device 20, is a block of rubber or other yieldable material 21 which engages the adjacent lever when said levers are drawn together and serves to limit the inward movement of said levers while at the same time constituting a bufier. It will thus be seen that when an inward pressure is exerted on the levers 15 the lower ends of the shanks 5 and 6 will be brought together while the lugs or extensions 16 will be forced upwardly and laterally in the arc of the circle thus causing the links 18 to exert an additional pull on the jaws thereby to force the cutting edges of the blades 10 in contact with each other. When the operating levers 15 are separated the links 17 will assume a substantially horizontal position with their adjacent longitudinal edges in alinement with each other thus moving the cutting blades to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The nippers may be made in different sizes and shapes and may be nickeled, japanned or otherwise plated or coated to protect the same against the action of the elements.
Havin thus described the invention what is claime is:
1. An implement of the class described comprising pivotally united members each having one end thereof provided with a jaw and its opposite end formed with a shank, operating levers each having a direct pivotal connection with the adjacent shank, and links forming a pivotal connection between the intermediate portions of the shanks and the operating levers.
2. An implement of the class described comprising co-acting members each having one end thereof provided with a jaw and its opposite end formed with a shank, a pin piercing both members and forming a pivotal connection between the same, operating levers each having a direct pivotal connection with the end of the adjacent shank and each having one end thereof extended beyond its pivot point, and links formin a pivotal connection between the extended ends of the operatin levers and the intermediate portions of t e shank.
3. An implement of the class described comprising co-acting members each having,
one end thereof provided with a jaw and its opposite end formed with a shank, said shanks extending in parallel planes throughout their entire length, a single pin forming a pivotal connection between said members, operating levers having their intermediate portions pivoted directly with the lowerends of the shanks and each having one end thereof projected beyond its pivot and provided with an angular extension, and links forming a pivotal connection between the intermediate portions of the shanks and the angular extensions of the operating levers.
4. An implement of the class described comprising co-acting members each having oneend thereof provided with a jaw having a flat head and-its opposite end formed with a reduced shank, the shanks of said members havin extending in parallel planes throughout their entire length, a pin forming a pivotal connection between said members, cutting blades secured to the heads, operating levers their intermediate portions pivoted direct y with the adjacent ends of the shanks and their terminals extended beyond the "pivot points and bent outwardly to form angularly disposed ears, links each having one end thereof pivotally connected with the JERRY D.
