To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. SHEAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of fire-proof doors and similar closures in which a wood base or core is combined with sheet metal covering and in which suitable fire-proof filling may be substituted for the wood if desired to increase the fire resisting qualities of the structure at certain points.
In carrying out my invention I entirely inclose a wp odendo or having plain surfaces, with metal plates which are nailed to the faces and edges of the door in any desired manner so that no portion of the wood is exposed. I then apply the stile pieces in the form of wood strips, and the necessary crosspieces, to form the panels. These stile and cross members have applied thereto sheetmetal covers the edges of which are inter locked with corresponding edges of the plates covering the base or core portion of the door. Means are provided for covering the bottom edge of the door so as to give it a neat finished appearance.
The advantages resulting from the adaptation of my invention to doors will be apparent to those skilled in the art, hence need not be set forth herein.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention in a preferred form in the following views :Figure 1 shows in elevation the lower half of a door as it appears when constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on a magnified scale on the line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-section on a magnified scale, on the line 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a cross-section, on a magnified scale on the line 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the metal covering for one of the stiles; Fig. 6 is a pers ective view of the portion of the corner of a oor, and Fig. 7 is a top plan view of Fig. 6 with stile covering removed.
Referring to the details of the drawing 10 represents generally a door having the general external appearance of an ordinary paneled door, 11 re resents the wood core or base member w 'ch is covered by metal 55 plates on all sides and edges thus entirely protecting the wood from direct contact with the flames in case of fire in proximity to the door. Plates 12 embrace the stile portions of the core 11 covering the side margin and both sides thereof as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the edges of said plates being bent at right angles 13 and then deflected and the border turned under to form a half seam 14 to receive the flange 16 of a plate which covers the panel surface of the door between the stile portions, thus completing an interlocking joint or seam between the said plates 12 and 15. The base member or core 11 is thus entirely covered by metal plates, the closure being finished by lapping the edges of said plates at the top and bottom of the door in the manner shown at 12 in Fig. 2. The stiles 17 are covered on their outer surfaces by a single plate of metal 18, which embraces the edges of the stiles and stile portion of the core 11 lying therebetween, the margin of the plate being formed with corrugations which take the shape of an ornamental molding 19, and the extreme border 20 is then bent back upon itself to lie upon the plate 15 opposite the panel portion and u on the extreme border 24 of the plates 22 w ich are bent at 23 so as to embrace the molding 19, said plates 22 forming a covering for the rail 21, as shown in Fig. 4. The said plate 22 is furnished with a molding 19 similar to the molding 19 being preferably secured when in contact with the plate 12 by soldering.
The end margins of the stile covering 18 are turned over upon the edges of the door, the extreme border being bent upon itself to form a half seam 25 (Fig. 5). The plates 22 which cover the rails 21, are furnished at the top and bottom of the door with a similar turned edge 25. The said seams 25, 25 of the plate 22 and the stile covering 18 respectively, are engaged by a metal strip 26 which is provided on each margin with a corresponding recurved border 27 thus forming an even surface for the top and bottom edges of the complete door.
The various parts of the door thus described are assembled in the following manner: The core piece being first covered by the metal plates 12 and 15 in the manner set forth, the stile 17 and the rails 21 are then put in place and secured to the base or core member 11 by nailing or screwing. The rail 21 is then covered with the plate 22 and the stile 19 is then incased by sliding its cover L" II plate 18 into place in the manner previously described. The strip 26 is then slipped into place its seams 27 interlocking with the seams 25 of the plates 22, the median line of said strip being depressed to avoid interference with the overlapping edges 12" of the plate 12 as seen best in Fig. 6, thus binding the plates in position. The operation of assembling is then completed by putting in place the median rail 28. This member is covered in a simple manner with a plate which has its margins molded to correspond with the other moldings of the panel, the extreme borders being turned under the edges of the rail, and secured to the plate 15 in the manner described in connection with the molding 19.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. In a structure for the purpose specified, the combination of a base member, a metal covering for said member, stiles and rails superposed upon said metal covering and metal plates covering said stiles and rails.
2. In a door, the combination of a base member, a metal covering for said member, said covering consisting of marginal plates, and a median plate said plates provided with interlocking flanges, stiles and rails superposed upon said metal covering, and metal plates covering said stiles and rails.
3. In a door, the combination of a base member provided with a metal covering, of stiles superposed upon said metal covering, metal plates covering said stiles and having molded flanges, said flanges interlocking with the metal covering of the base member, rails superposed upon the base covering and having flanges interlocking with the flanges of in ia the said base covering and with thiflange of the stile covering.
4. In a door, the combination of a base member, a plurality of plates covering said base member and having interlocking flanges, stiles and rails superposed upon said base covering, and plates embracing said stiles and rails and having flanges interlocking with the said interlocking flanges of the base covering.
5. In a door, the combination of a base member, a plurality of covering plates for said member, said plates having interlocking flanges, stiles and rails having metal covering plates, said metal plates having molded flanges adapted to interlock with the flanges of the base covering, and a marginal strip for the door, said strip having seamed borders adapted to engage seams in the contiguous borders of the rail and stile coverings.
6. In a door, the combination of a base member, a metal covering for said member consisting of marginal plates embracing opposite edges of said member and having the borders furnished with seamed flanges, and a median plate embracing one edge of the member and having its ends turned to over lap upon the opposite edge, its sides provided with seamed flanges interlocking with the seamed flanges of said marginal plates, stiles and rails superposed upon said marginal and median plates, and metal coverings for said. stiles and rails.
