HENRr Gnrsnunonnn, or sonENncrAnY, NEW COMPANY, A CORPORATION or YORK, ASSIGNOR T Q. GENERAL ELECTRIC Nnw voran.
ATTAGHING-PLU'Gr To all whom it muy concern: -Be 1t known that I., HENRY GsisnNrrNEn, acrtizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady,' l
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovcients in Attaching- Plugs, of which the following is a specifica` tion.'
.The object of the present invention is to provide an improved attaching plug which may be readily inserted in the l'ordinary incandescent lamp socket or receptacle without rotin-tion, and by which the electric circuit may disturbance of the plug in relation to the In carrying' out my invention l provide a base of insulating material adaptedl to bc thrust longitudinally of an ordinary lamp socket or receptacle upon which are mounted a center vcontact and a spring-blade side contact niovable radially by a key into engagement with the inner surface ot' the contact shell of the socket or receptacle, and on the outer end of which are mounted suitable binding posts respectively connected to the center' and side contacts and to which the electric con. ductors may be secured in the usual manner. For a more complete understanding of rn invention reference may be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a lamp shade andholder and a side elevation of a socket with an attaching plugembodying my invention connected "thereto,- Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal section of the attaching-plug drawn to a slightly larger scale;' Fig.,3 isv an elevation of the front end of the base part withthe key shaft and cover-hold-4 ing screw shown in section; and Fig. 4 is an innerend'elevation of the plug base.
A The base l of the attaching-plug is made of porcelain or other suitable insulating ma- V terial, and is formed with a larger cylindrical outer section 2 and a smaller cylindrical inner section 3 with an intervening shoulder 4,
The outer end is provided with a cup-sha ed recess 5, from the bottom of which eXtenr an axial aperture 6 to the inner end of the plug and a rectangular side aperture 7 to 'the shoulder 4 from which it continues along the 55 side of the inner section 8 in the former1 an Specification of-Letters Patent. open channel 8. The inner section 3 is ol a size to freely pass longitudinally without relation into the contact-shell of the ordinary amp socket and is provided with an inner end in a plane atright angles to its axis .having its peripheral corner chainl'ered and the portions about the central aperti-rre 6 counter sunk.
A center contactcensisting df a-Inetallic` washer 9 with its lcentral portion struck up 65 and adapted to ent er the counter-sunk end oi" thev aperture 6 and having a circular slit v10 between the struck-up portion and its periphery whereby a portion of the outer edge is rendered free to be permanently bent up out of the plane of the inainportion of the washer to form a yicldable enntact surface. The washer 9 is secured to the end ofthe plug by means of a screw 11 exten ingl therethrongh, through the axial aperture 6 and 75 engaging a tapped hole in a terminal plate 1? in the bottom of the recess 5.
Theplate l2 has two arms disposed at right angles, in one. of which is provided a binding screw 1.3, and inthe other a ta ed hole for the reception of the `cover-ho fing screw 1li. A second terminal plate 15 is secured in the recess 5 by a screw 16 and provided at one end with a binding-screw 17. To the opposite end of the plate 15 is secured a spring contact blade 18 which extends through the side aperture 7 and the open channel 8 to near the inner end of the plug. The blade is provided with oorrugations 19 which correspond with the threads on the Contact shell of the standard Edison socket and are designed to hold'the plug'froin pulling out whenthe .blade has been forced into electrical contact with the socket contact shell. The opposite sid'e of the small section 3 of the base may be provided with a series of short grooves'20 toengage the thread on the Oppoifte side of the socket shell so as to overcome the tendency of the plug to cant to one side. The cover 21 is also .made of porloo .celain or. other suitable insulation, and Vis formed with a diameter equal-to that of the larger section of the base and has a central aperture 22 for the passage therethrough of the conductor wires, a side counter-sunk hole'. 105
23for the holding-screw 14, and on the oppo site side a cylindrical aperture 24.
The means for forcing the spring Contact blade 18 outward into engagement with the contact-shell or' the socket consists of a key 110 the key is provided with a thumb-piecel 29 of' 'vgrooved for ther'eception of a spring washer 25 comprisingA a shank 26 extending through nent lengagement with they contacts of-Y the l' lamp socket Without removal of the lampsha e,
vsprlng contact blade to move inward out of contacts mounted on said'base', andhand-v said base, and means for forcing said side the aperture 24 of the/cover andlying in a groove 27 formed on the inner -Wall of the side aperture 7 and channel 8, and provided at its inner end with a nib or projection 28 which engag'Je's at its end with t e back ofthe contact' lade when turnede The outer end of molded insulation, and at the inner face of thefcover its shank is .circumferentially 30'. which serves to hold the-key from longiftudinal displacement relative to the cover.
In order that the key may be arrested when the nib 28 is at the highest point of its arc/ of travel, a` stop 31 is provided upon the. contact blade 18 in its ath of rotation.
As is apparent from ig. 1 the attachingplug .may be inserted and clamped in permaaswould ordinarily be necessary 1n connecting the attaching-plugs heretofore in use. 'Moreover, in case it be connected to a keyless socket or receptacle the circuit may be readily broken without vremoval of the plug by merely turning its key to permit' the engagement with. the cont socket or receptacle.
Idonot wish to limit myself to the particular sha e or arrangement of parts shown and'descri ed, foi-,it 1s apparent that theyI maybe changed and modled without departing from my invention.
What I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the-United States', is:
1. An attaching-plu comprisin an insu-,v latin base adapted to e thrust en Wise into a societ or receptacle, metallic en d and side act .shell of the contact radially outward.
'lating base adapted to 4. An attaching-plu comprising an insulatin base adapted toe thrustf'ndwise into a soc et or receptacle, a metallicK contact se-4 cured to one end thereof, a spring contact mounted in a channel in one side of saidl base,
and means for forcing said spring contactv outwardly.
5. An attaching-plug comprisin an insulating base having a cylindrica portion adapted to be thrust endwise into a socket or receptacle'and provided with a side channel, a metallic contact secured to the end of said base; a -spring'contact blade secured to said base and normally lying within said channel,
and a key adapted to engage sa'il contact blade and force it outwardly.
6. An attaching-plug comprising an insue thrust endwise into v a threaded contactshell offa socket or receptacle,l a, metallic center contactv mountedV thereon, a spring contact blade mounted upon the side thereof and provided With cor.- rugations adapted to engage the threads of the contact shell, and'means for moving said blade outwardly. .y
7. An attaching-plug comprising an insulating base provided with terminal plates, end and side contact members respectively connected to'said plates, and a rotary key adapted to engage saidside contact and force it radiall'o'u'tward.-
8. An attac ing-plug comprisin an insu*- tion provided on one side with a series .of transverse ribs and a channel in the opposite lating base having a reduced cylin 'rical porside, a center contact secured to the end of said cylindrical portion, and a movable corruvated contact blade secured in said chan- ,9. A lug comprising a body of insulatin lmateria, a contact carried thereby an adapted to engage one ofthe contacts of the socket,a' mova contact (if the socket, sald movable contact be' formed with threads, and means carried y the plug to operate said movable contact to force the threads thereof into engagement with the threads of the socket.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 20th da of August, 1903. v
