To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, ,Gnonon G. FLOYD and CHARLES F. MURRAY, both citizens of theUnited States, residing, respectively, at
Granite, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, and Chicago, county of Cook, and
State of lllinois,,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Column-Guide and Bolster Constructions for Car-Trucks, of
which the following is a s ecification.
' The main and principa object of our invention is the improvement of railway car trucks in such a manner thatthe truck bolster may be readily removed without necessister and spring aperture in each side frame shall have a portion Wide 1 enough to permit the Withdrawalfiof whatever part is equipped with the bolster column guides.

This casting has a divided Wedgeshaped rib, each portion being integral with one of the parts of the casting, whereby the bolster end having a transverse wedge-shared groove may be fitted over the divided rib, thereby holding the two parts of the casting together and preventing longitudinal shifting or move ment of the bolster, becausethe parts of the casting have guiding lugs or ribs c'o-acting with the column portions of the side frame.
On its under surface the bolster supporting casting may have a plurality of lugs or pro- 10 jections adapted to cooperate with recesses or apertures 1n the spring cap to hold the portions of the casting together in whole or inpart in matched position.

9.011 of the car trucks illustrated has a cast metal side frame 20 with a substantially rectangular central spring and bolster opening 21' having vertical sides or margins 22 form-- ing the columns of the side frame. Res ting on a spring seat 23 is the usual number of coil I spring cap 26 by the ordinary bolt or red 27 Seated on the spring cap 25 is a divided combined bolster support and column guide 28, illustrated inperspective in Fig. 6, com. osed of two parts 29 and 30 each of which ias a bottom wall 3]. with upstanding walls 32st its opposite ends, each of which is preferably provided. on its outer face with a guiding rib or lug 33. Along one edge of the base 31 of each half of the bolster support casting there is a rib or flange 34, the inner face of which is beveled or inclined as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The outer races of the llanges 34: are flat'or plane surfaces and are adapted to be broughttogether against one another, as is indicated in Fig. 2. On its under surface the bottom wall 31 of each part oi the divided bolster support has one or more downwardlyextended lugs or projections 36 which are adapted'to fit-in apertures or recesses of the spring cap 25, as is obvious. The spring cap itself is sufficient to hold the two parts of the divided casting together in the matched re .the two parts 34 and the inner portion of the groove 37 of the bolster.
It will be apparent that due to the wedge connection between the bolster and the casting the two parts of the latter will be firmly held together, and if any wear occurs between the casting and the bolster, the parts will be worn to a nice seat and fit. To remove the holster it is merely necessary to jack it up suflicientl so that the springs may be taken out and t divided bolster support lowered sufficientl to free its divided rib from the bolster, w ereupon both parts of the casting may be readily removed sidewise, as is obvious, the one part inwardly and the other part outwardly.- It is not absolutely necessary that at each end the two-part casting should have a pair of guiding ribs 83, since a rib to co-act with either the inner or the outer sur-- face of the column 22 would be sufficient, rovided the construction was the same at 0th sides of the truck to maintain the bolster in lace and prevent its 1e thwis e shifting. t will be apparent that t e spring cap and bolster both act to hold the parts of the bolster sup orting casting "in matched relation, and t lat its divided rib 34,. 34 by coacting with the bolster prevents the latter from moving out of place.
The construction shown in Figs. 7 to 12, inclusive, is much like that illustrated in Figs. 16 except that the divided bolster supporting and guiding casting 38 has in place of the lugs or projections 35 on its under surface a divided, curved, downwardlvextended flange 39 adapted to fit over the top ends of the springs or the spring cap. The centrally-disposed divided rib 40 has its surface rounded instead of flattened, as is shown in Fig. 2, and'the groove 41 of the bolster 42 is made to correspond in shape. The action between the bolster and rib is, nevertheless, that of a wedge and the bolster acts to hold together, the two parts of the casting while the rib there f prevents lengthwise shifting of the bolster. As in the previous construction, the divided casting is equipped at each end with column guide ribs 42, although, as ex lained above, one rib at each end would so we.

We claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a divided bolster support adapted to rest on the springs of a car truck side frame, each part of the support having a rib or flange which unitedly form a single rib when the parts are in matched position, substantially as described.

As an article of manufacture, a divided bolster support adapted to rest onthe springs of a car truck side frame,,one or more parts of said support having a guiding rib adapted to co-act with the side frame, and each art of the support having a rib or flange W iich unitedly form a single rib when the parts of the su ort are in matchedposition, sub stantiallg as described.
4. As an article of manufacture, a divided bolster support adapted to rest on the springs of a car truck side frame, the parts of .said support having means whereby the spring cap of the springs may hold the.parts of the sup ort in matched position, substantially as escribed.
