v Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouthpieces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The present invention relates to improvements in mouth pieces for cornets and other wind instruments of a similar character.

The object of the invention is to produce a mouth piece for use in instruments of this character of such a construction that the vibrating sections of the lips, when applied to the same, will be of less width in proportion to their length than is the case with the ordi nary mouth piece, thereby producing a high tone with a greater ease than in the ordinary mouth piece and preserving the quality and volume of the tones of the middle and lower registers.

lVith this object in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and more fully pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved mouth piece; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view of the old form of mouth piece, with the lip sections applied thereto; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of my improved mouth piece.

In carrying out my invention I employ a mouth piece of the same general construction as the ordinary mouth piece having a cup, as shown at 1, and a connecting tube 2,

whereby the same is connected with the mouth pipe of the instrument. The present invention consists in making this cup with a diameter taken in one direction of a greater length than a second-diameter taken in a direction' substantially at right angles to the first diameter, and, in practice, the cup is usually made substantially elliptical in shape. This construction may be provided in any suitable manner, one convenient method of providing the same being to take the ordinary mouth piece and split the same through its longitudinal center for a portion of its length, thereby removing a portion of the side walls near the center of the mouth piece:

noticed in these sections a-b of the li s 4 and 5, as shown The two portions of the mouth piece are then pressed together and their edges united in any suitable manner, thereby producing a mouth piece substantially elliptical in shape, such as is shown in Fig. 1.

In the diagrammatic view illustrated in Fig. 3, I have shown the old form mouth piece at 3, having applied thereto the lip sections 4 and 5, while in Fig. 4 I have shown my improved mouth piece at 6, with the lip sections 7 and 8 a plied thereto. 7 and 8 to vibrate more quickly and with greater ease than the lips 4 and 5, thus producing the high tones with much greater ease, and, at the same time, retaining the

lips

7 and 8 of sufficient length to produce the slow vibrations with ease and power. Thus it will be seen that this construction of the mouth piece will allow the high tones to be produced with great ease without sacrificing the ability of the mouth piece to'produce the low tones with ease, volume and power.

Iwish it to be understood that I do notdesire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown anddescribed, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A mouth iece of the character described having its iameter taken in one direction at right angles to the direction of the length of said mouth piece of greater length than a second diameter taken at substantially right angles to the first-mentioned diameter, and also at right angles to the direction of the length of said mouth piece.
