WRENCH'.
i Patented Aug. 4, 190i8.
T o all -z/:zom 'it ma y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MORRIS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in thecoimtyof Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'renchcs'; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has. relation to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its object. the production Of a simple and economical device of this character adapted to be readily and easily adjusted to meet all requirements.
A further object of the invention is to provide the wrench'with an adjustable handle which may also be employed as a wrench.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of -a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention with parts broken away to more advantageously illustrate the invention. Fig. '2 is a cross section taken on the line '2*"2 of Fig. 1. F ig. 3 is a view in side -elevation of a modified form of the invention, parts broken away to more advantageously illustrate the invention; and Fig. -1 isa cross section taken on the line 4-4 of F lg. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, .which are for illustrative purposes only, and therefore not drawn to any particular scale, 1 indicates the wrench body. Said body is provided at one end with a ixed jaw, 2, and 1n each side with a longitudinal depression or recess, 3.
4 indicates a jaw arranged to slide under the body of the wrench, said aw having two oppositely disposed side tlanges or members, 5, adapted to embrace opposite sides of the body, -said member ccnstituting a guide. Said jaw, 4, is held in adjustable position by screws, l6, arranged to work through the side flanges or members of the same, and engage in the depressions or recesses, 3, of the wrench body. Said jaw 4 ma r be adjusted to suit all requirements by a ongitudinaliy disposed screw, T, screwing into a correspond` ing screw threaded socket in the body of the same. This screw is provided at its outer end with a nut, S, for turning it, said nut having a stem or extension, 9, extending. from Y one face and iitting in a corresponding socket 1U of a depending member, 11, depending from the wrench bouv near-the outer ends A v I eyes when they of the depressions or recesses, 3. The body of the wrench is prolonged or extends some little distance beyond the depending member, 11, such prolongation constituting a handle, 12, the outer end of which terminates in alligator jaws, 13, one of which is provided with inclined teeth, l-l, to enable it to securely gri i an object.
lin the modification of the invention, the handle comprises two independent members namely, an up er and lower member, 15 and 16, respective y, the upper member being formed by body, and the lower beinc hinged to the wrench bod adjacent the inner `end of the upper mem 3er. Each of said members is provided with a plurality of recesses or depressions 17, adapted to register and form are in contiguous relation, adapted to receive thread cutting dies, (not shown). The lower or hinged member, 16, may bevadjusted relatively to the other handle member by an adjusting screw, 18, working through a corresponding aperture in the hinged member, and screwing in a screw threaded aperture in the fixed member.
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a wrench a shank having a fixed jaw at one end and oppositely grooves on thc sides thereof, a longitudinally perforated lug on the front edge of said shan an adjusting screw having a reduced c lindrical extension closely litting the per Oration whereby said lscrew is held in parellelism with said shank, means to hold said screw against movement towards said fixed jaw, a. movable jaw mounted to slide longitudinally of said shank and having a threaded bore therein adapted to receive said screw, the distance from the forward end of said screw to the face of said fixed jaw being greater than the length of said movable jaw, said movable jaw consisting of a body portion having backwardly projecting spaced flanges embracing said shank, said spaced ilanges being terminated slightly to the rear of said longitudinal groove, said llanges being provided with threaded pcrforations registerinr with said groove, and stub screws in sai( threaded perfor-ations and adapted to engage in said grooves, said stub screws being adapted to be disengaged from said longitudinal grooves without removing said stub screws from said threaded -perforations,
a prolongation of the wrenchdisposcd longitudinal eso.y
