J. PATTON THOMPSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.v
Letters Patent No. 89,519, cated Apre 27,1869.
IMPROVED SPOOL-RESBRVOIR OR CASE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Io all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. PATTON THOMPSON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Spool-Reservoir; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My improved spool-reservoir consists of a number of graduated receptacles, a back plate, front plate, or its equivalent, and bottom board, the whole being arranged for the storage and ready withdrawal of spools, substantially as described hereafter.
In order to enable others skilled in the a'rt to make and use my invention, I will nowA proceed to describe its -width corresponding with the diameter of the spools which they have to receive. Thus the rst receptacle,
1, is wide enough to receive a spool of large diameter, .while the last receptacle, 10, is just wide enough to receive a spool of the smallest diameter.
The front of these receptacles consists of a plate, B, of glass, fitted to the standards A and A', and the' rear consists of a board, C, secured to the same standards, and inclined as shown in iig. 2, so that the receptacles from 1 to 10 may be reduced in length to correspond with that of the spools which they have to receive.
The partitions b b, above referred to, are secured to the board AO, and extend to the glass front.
A cover, E, is hinged to the upper edge of the back board C at e, and has in front a flange, f, overlapping the glass, which is protected at its 'lower edge by a Slat, h, secured to the standards.
The under edge of this slat is so far from the bottom board, d, that the largest spool can be pushed out from between them, the lower edge of the board G being also lso far from the said bottom board that a finger can be introduced between them, so as to push out a spool.
After opening the lid, or cover E, the spools are arranged .in the several receptacles according to size of spool and quality of the thread, and this is shown by numbers on the glass, as seen in iig. 1, these numbers indicating the quality of the thread. p
The apparatus may be placed on the counter of a store, where it will present an ornamental appearance.
A purchaser of spools can at once select from the mass exposed to view, and the attendant immediately pushes out from the back the lowest spool of the character selected, the spools above at'once falling, and the lowest one of the tier taking its` place on the board d, ready to be pushed out when it is required.
