TUNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS KESSLER, OF ST. MICHAELS, MINNESOTA.
TONGUE-SUPPORT.
T all when it may concern:
Be it known that 1,. NICHOLAS KEssLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Michaels, in the county of Wright and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongue-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to horse drawn vehicles, and more particularly to tongue supports tl'ierefor, and has for its object to provide such a structure which will support the tongue while the vehicle is in motion, thus relieving the team from the weight of the tongue.
Another object is to provide such a structure which may be at aehed to any vehicle tongues of the usual type.
Another object is to provide such an article having a means for adjusting the position of the tongues with relatiointo the "round.
Another object is to provide sucii a structure which may be manufa tured at low cost from stock material.
Other objects and advanta csavill be apparent from the following description, audit will be understood that changes inthe speeifie structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim, and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side view of the support attached to the tongue of a binder, the tongue being in lowered position, Fig. 2 is asectional view longitudinally of the 8111))01'13 t no tongue being in raised position, 1* ig. 3 is a top view of the supporter engaged with a tongue, Fig. 4 is a bottom view, Fig. '5 is a cross sectional view of the device, Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the position of the wheels of the support when the vehicle to which it is attached is turned.
.ltei'erring to the drawings, there is shown a tongue 10 having an operating lever 11 pivoted thereon and having the present support attached to the lower end thereof.
There are shown spaced yokcs 15 having a head portion 15 from which extend upwardly spaced arms 17 engaged slidably on the sides of the pole 10, a vertical opening 18 being formed in the head 16. Spaced connecting bars 19 are connected at their ends with the arms 17 outwardly thereof to hold the yokes 15 in spaced relation. A caster yoke 20 hav- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing av head portion 21 and spaced arms 22 is secured pivotally LO each of the yokcs 15 by means of a bolt 23 engaged through the opening 18 in the head 16 and an opening 24 through the head 21 of the yoke .20. The
The lever 11 comprises a rod having secured to its lower end spaced bars 26, their lower end portions oll'set from each other and engaged shdably outwardly of the tongue 10 and inwardly of the bars 19. The bars 26 are provided with registering openings 27 at their lower ends, and adjacent to the inner extremities of the offset portions openings 28 are formed. The bars 26 are secured )ivotally to the tongue 10 by means of a olt 29 extending through the opening .38 and through the tongue. The lower ends of the rods 26 are engaged pivotally with the rods 19 by means of a bolt 30 engaged in the openings '27 and openings 31 formed through the rods 19.
It will be seen that upon oscillation of the lever 11 the tongue 10 will be raised or lowered in unison with the movement of the lever, by reason of the engagement of the bar 26 between the tongue 10 and the connectin rods 19. The lever 11 may be conncete with a rack bar on an adjacent machine in any suitable manner, to-hold the ton ue adjustably at various heights. It will )0 seen that in this manner the tongue may be offectively sup )orted without adding to the labor of the draft animals.
\Vhat is claimed is An article of the class described comprising a truck having spaced side bars carrying yokes therebetween, said yokes having up wardly extending spaced arms arranged for the slidable engagement therebetween of avehicle tongue, casters pivoted to said yokes carrying supporting wheels, and a lever having its lower end engaged pivotally with said truck, and arranged for pivotal en agement inwardly of said end with a vehic. e tongue for oscillation to vary the height of the vehicle tongue above said truck.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
