Description

d tant gate ut @finie .-IAMES F. SIPPLE, OF FREDE RICA, DELAWARE.
Lette/rs Patent No. 89,511, dated April 27, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fitmwy concern v Beit known that I, JAMES F. SIPPLE, of Frederica, in the county of Kent, and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 shows the fastener applied to the shutters.
Figure 2, a part of the fastener, showing the manner of fastening together without passing the bolt entirely through.
Figure 3, an edgewise View, showing shutters fastened partially open.
Figure 4, a section of the short portion of the fast; ener.
Figures 5, 6, and 7, the disk or washer used to secure the bolt.
My invention relates to shutter-fasteners, so constructed and arranged that the bolt shall serve to ret-ain the shutter in a partially-open state, and also serve to fasten the shutters so securely that any shaking or rattling will be prevented, and is intended particularly to be an improvement upon the patent granted to William `M. Griscom, April 30, 1861.
I construct my fastener as follows:
Upon the platesb c, which are to be fastened to the shutters s s', are hollow box-formed projections m m', within which the boltB ifs-arranged to slide freely, and to have a limited vertical movement.
In the face of the chamber m is an oblong slot, through which passes the stem of stud, or handle E, by which the bolt B is moved back and forth For the purpose of securing the bolt B in any position within the boxes m an', I place the two disks, D D', in the boxes m m', so constructed and arranged as to press against the bolt B, when turned in the proper direction by the handles h h.
The disk D has on its face, next to the box m', two inclined planes, formed to correspond with corresponding plane upon the inner face of the box m.
. lhe face of the -disk next to the bolt B is Hat, except the small projections 1' r, cast thereon for the purpose of lling up the space between the disk and bolt, in case there should be a necessity for them on account of the castings not fitting properly. These projections can be filed off, as may be necessary, to make a good lit. v
The inclined planes, upon the inside of the box m', are shown in section at fig. 4. i
The plate b of the shutters has a projection, w, forming a chamber for receiving the projection onthe end of the holt B, so as to fasten the shutters s -s' partially open, as shown in g. 3.
To secure the bolt B more permanently while the shutters are partially open, a small key-boltmay be introduced below the projection-w, so as to key into the projection upon the end of the bolt B, said projection being made long enough for`that purpose.
The advantages of my invention ,over that of Grise coms, is in having the two disks instedof one', and also in having the disks so arranged as to press the bolt B outward against the plates b c, thus securing both ends of the bolt B iirmly against the plates.
The form of the disks maybe varied, but is intended to be substantially as shown in figs. 5, 6, and 7.
Having thus described my improvements,
. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of the two disks D D', in combination with the bolt B,plates b c, and shutters s s', the whole constructed and arranged ,substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
A JAMES F. SIPPLE.
