Be it known that I. PETER E. JonANsoN, a citizen of Sweden, (who has declared his intention to become a citizen of the Unit-cd States,) residing at 'arren. in the county of l-Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable leamers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal-working tools, such as reameis, taps, etc., designed especially to operate upon the wall or periphery of a cylindrical bore or perforation, either to enlarge the bore or aperture to a given d1- mension or to dress the same to a given contour, as in tapping the saine for the insertion of a bolt; and the invention consists of the parts, and the constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts, forming the iinproved tool which I will hereinafter describe and claim.

in carrying out my invention I construct the reamer with a lower or shell portion having an axial-opening' or bore, o, said shell portion being split longitudinally through its sides from the lowe.r or outer end to a point, B, as indicated in Fig'.Y 1. The number of divisions of this shell-portion may be varied to suit the purposes for which the tool is used; in the present instance I show said shell as divided radially into eight parts, cach of which is externally groored and longitudinally iluted on its outer surface and provided with cutting edges as is customary in this form of reainer. ing substantially connected with the walls of the axial-opening, a, by means of inclined or tapering walls which constitute substantially a conical seat for the corresponding dished or recessed tace of a washer, F, said washer having an exterior diameter substantially equal to that of the enlarged chamber mentioned and having sides which are parallel with the inner walls of said chamber.
Fitting the axial-opening or bore, a., is the bolt7 D, which bolt is made tapering or coneshaped and has its opposite ends threaded as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. One of these threaded ends is designed to screw into engagement with the reduced axial-opening or bore formed in the shank, G, and the other threaded portion is formed below a shoulder, c, on said bolt, and is adapted to receive the aforesaid collar and adjusting nut, as I will presently explain.
As shown in Fig. 1, the axial openings or bores, a and b, of the shell are substantially connected by means of an annular inclined wall which forms substantially a cone-shaped seat-portion at the base of the enlarged bore, b, said seat-portion being adapted for engagement with the beforementioned corresponding female-portion formed upon the surface of the annular washer, F, said washer havin(r a central perforation to enable it to .be slipped over the outer threaded end of the bolt, D, and to bear against the shoulder, c, formed at the base of said threaded portion.
Below the washer and adapted to engage the outer threaded end of the bolt, D, is the adjusting-nut, F, which bears aga-inst the washer and causes its dished or recessed portion to bear against the inclined walls of the sections of the reainer-shell to thereby hold said sections from spreading. The outer end of the shank extends beyond the outer threaded portion of said shank and the extremity of this extended portion is fashioned to receive a wrench or like tool whereby the shank may be turned to longitudinally adjust it relative to the shell of the reamer. As the adjusting-nut is also contained within the enlarged chamber, b, it is provided with notches or recesses adapted to )e engaged by a spanner-wrench or like tool for screwing and unscrewing the nut and adjusting the same on the shank or bolt.
It will be observed in Fig. 1 that the shank or bolt has no iortion projecting beyond the outer end of the reamer, shell and that the adjusting-nut and washer are contained within the housing ornied by'the bore, b, and
\. that they are within the plane of the outer end of Asaid shell. By this construction the reanier may be used to enlarge or dress a cylindrical perforation or bored surface. clear to the inner limits thereof and without any portion of the bolt or the nut coming in contact with an end wall of said perforation or bored surface.
