Description

- UNITED v STATES PATEIr T OFFICE.
JOHN J. BUCHANAN, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGXOR TO WATERBURY BUCKLE CO.,` OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, -A CORPORATION.
SUSPENDERBUCKLE.
To all whom it may concern.: l
Be it known that I, Jonx J. BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVaterbur f, in the county of N ew Haven and State of onnecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspender- Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanyino drawings and the letters of reference mar ed thereo i, to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionl o the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-' Figure 1 a view in front elevation of a suspender buckle constructed in accordance with my invention. Figf-Z a detached View thereof on a larger scale, th clam ing-lever of the buckle being shown in'tsful open iosition. Fig. 3 an edge view of the buc le shown as webhed and with the lever partially open. Fig. -t a4 detached view\ot' the ivotal ingerpiece. Fig. 5 a brokemview of a buckle illustrative of the prior art,`this buckle having its clamping-lever provided with a ingenpiece having no stop-finger, whereby the fingeriece is liable to be swung inward so as to foul the lever and prevent it from being closed as shown in this figure.
My invention relates to an improvement in suspender buckles of that class in which the clamping-lever is furnished with a depending pivotal iingenpiece, the object being to provide means for preventing the inger nece from swinging inward so as to foul the lever and prevent it from being crowded down into its c Osed position.
With these ends in w'ew my invention consists in a suspender buckle having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I provide the pivotal linger-piece 2 with a stop-finger 3 located in its plane and extending upward at a right angle from its suspension-bar l nndvay the length thereof, the said bar being located in a horizontal sleeve 5 formed upon the lower end of the outer arm or body 6 of the sheet-metal clamping-lever of the buckle. s shown the stopfinger 3 is formed b v extending at one end of A the wire from which the nger piece 2 is Specification of Letters Patent.

formed, but I do not limit myself to lproducing the said stop-finger in any )artcu ar way. For the clearance of the said stop-iinver 3, the sleeve 5 ranged notch :i permitting the finger 3 to swing with the .finger-piece 2 and to enga e with the inner t'ace of the outer arm or bot y 6 of the clamping-lever the short arm or clamping edge T of which engages with the webbing 8 and fesses the same a Yainst the yielding-back p ate 9 of the buc derame which also comprises a wire loop 10 upon which the lever is pivotally mounted in the usual manner, the lever being rovided for this pur ose, as shown, with s eeves 11 receiving t 1e trunnions 12 formed by the ends of the wire loop 10. But the speciic construction of the buckle may be varied as desired, my prese-Lt invention relating only to the provision ot' the finger-piece 2 with a stoplinger 3. This'stop-linger does not prevent the finger-piece 2 from being swuiuT outward upon its sus pension bar i as shown by broken lines in Fig. 3 for the more convenient grasp- 75 ing and operation of the clamping-lever of the buckle, but it. does prevent the iinUer- `piece -from being swung inward so as to ibul the lever and prevent the same from being crowded down into its closed position as shown by Fig. 5 which illustrates a buckle having a pivotal piece as now constructed without the stop furnished by my invention.
I claim?- In a sus entier buckle, the combination with a buc e-r'rame, of a clam )ing-lever pivetally connected vn'th the said frame, and a. pivotal fmgenpece depending from the outer arm of the said clamping-lever and provided with a stop constructed and arranged to engage the inner face of the said arm of the clamping lever, whereby the said .fingerpiece is pre exited from swinging -Inward under the said lever and so prevent the samefrom being cron-ded into its closed position.
