T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRAXZ BRCKMAXN, i Jr., engineer, and OTTO DEMPEWOLF, lockg smith, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, 't residing at Brunswick, Duchy of Brunswick, i Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Flanging, Crimping, or Otherwlse Shaping Sheet-Metal Blanks, of which the follow,- ing is a specification.
T his invention relates to improvements in apparatus for tlanging, crimping, or otherwise shaping sheetI metal blanks, 1n which apparatus the blank is to be worked in successive steps over the whole length of its edge. And the object of the improvements is to pro i vide an apparatus of this class which allows of a continuous operation of the apparatus during all the steps of working the blank, without necessitating the removal of the same from one shaping tool to the next one. And for this purpose, a shaping tool is provided in the improved machine comprising all the sectional tools required for working the blank from the beginning to the end, when the object is completed, which sec-f tional tools come successively and automatically into operation on the blank, while the latter always remains mounted on the same l support.
ln the example illustrated in the drawings, the various tool-elements are successively formed on the circumference of a disk adapt- 5 ed to be rotated in proximity to the blank holder, so that by the rotation of the disk, each sectional tool is successively brought into operation on the blank.
The invent-ion also consists in certain de tails of construction, whereby the usefulness of the improved apparatus is increased, and l a continuous operation of the same is obtained.

As stated, while the first section dl is opposite the blank holder c, no Hanging action takes place as shown in Fig. 2. The radius of the second sect-ion d2 is so much langer than that of the iirst section, as to perform the preliminary llanging operation on the blank (F ig. 3), the said operation extending over the entire circumference of the blank a, because the length of the section d1 is e ual to the circumference of the blank. XY ien the preliminary o eration is thus completed, the third section t' 3 having a further increased radius comes into action, whereby the ianging operation is continued, as shown in Fig. 4, which operatlon again extends over the entire circumference of the can blank. AI. last, thesection d* cornes into operation, whereby the tlange of the can is completed, as shown in Fig. 5.
The shaft supportin(r the disk d is so connected with the shaft oli the holder c, that the latter, at the end of each complete rotation of the disk d and while the section (Z1 is opposite the holder, is automatically moved` away from the disk d and back again, so that the completed blank may fall oli' the holder, and a new tubular blank may be placed on the same. To show what may be done for this purpose, the shafts c, c, Figs. 7, S and 9 are. each provided with flanges cz having s projection formed on their clrcumferene-. which is engaged by a rocking lever m. The iatter` is engaged by a cam groove formed on the circumference of a. cam disk i rigidly secured to the. shaft e, which cam groove by means of an intermediary ring fm rocks the lever 4m. each time the section d is opposite the holder c, so that the latter is moved out of the blank a and allows the same io fall down on supports k which have been moved inwardly by means of the levers with which said supports are connected. Tfor iricreasing the output of the machine, automatic feeding device may be provided. whereb' a new blank is supplied, whenever eompleted one slips ofl` the holder. For pur ose a chute l is provided receiving the blanks, which are held in position bjr the blank supported on the holder. lf the lait er drops its blank down to the supports .4: `which are moved together by the levers m simultaneously while the disks c are sepa new blank rolls down on the chute l vsdisks c are still separated. This new blank is held u on the flanges b of the ished blank wlnch rests upon the supporte l(Fig. 9), and between the circumference-s of the disks dV and the next blank lying in the chute l, in such position relatively to the separated disks c, that the said disks c may be moved together and into ti-.e new blank, by means of the cam groove 'i when the shaft c is further rotated. The operation of the machine is thereby rendered entirely automatic.
lf it isdcsired to have the tool work not only. by pressure, but also by friction. so as to grind the blank, the surfaces of the holder r: and the disk d are operated at dierent speeds.
lVhile, in the foregoing, for the purpose of explaining the. invention, the various tool sections are shown as being formed by varying'the radius of the disk d, the invention is notl limited to this particular structure, but the said sections may also be formed in dill'ercnt ways, for instance, by varying the breadth of the disk d.
Instead of having the disk d act directly on the blank a., a swinging disk n may be interl posed between the said disk and the blank, as shown in Fig. 6, which disk 'n is moved towards and from thev blank by the disk d according to the radius of its various sections d1 to fl, and thereby exerts the Hanging pressure on the blank.
Claims:
1. In 'an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a. holder for the blank, of a shaping tool comprising a plurality of rigidly connected tool elements, arranged in an immovable relation to each other, and adapted to perform successive steps in working the blank, and nie-sns for moving the said elements.
2. ln an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a-holder for the blank, of a disk having sections of its circumference successively made with increasing radii, and means for rotating the disk.
3. In an apparatus of the, character described, the combination with a disk shaped holder for the blank, of a. disk having sections of its circumference successively mede with 'inethe blank, and means for moving the hoder in or out.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, a holt er for the blank, a shaping tool,
and a support on which a. shaped blank is adapted to rest .in such a position as to ten`1-V porarily carry the next blank.
