TACK .AND STAPLE FULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 16, 1907. Serial No. $84,009:.
without any danger of cutting the head off the same.
Another object of my invention is to rovide a tool which is so constructed that w en' the jaws are closed on the tack and pressure applied to the handle, the tack will be drawn upwardly without any danger of breaking the head off, as is the case with devices of this character now in use. A With these and other objects in view, the idvention consists in the novel features of I Eonstruction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specificationz Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tool, showing it in position to draw 7 a tack. Fig. 2 is a side view of the tool showing it in the act of drawingatack. Fig. 3 is an end view of the tool, a portion of the handle and shank being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the shanks carrying the gri ping jaws. Fig. 5 is a side view of the too in position to drawa staple. Fig. 6 is a side view of the tool in the act of drawing the staple. v
In the drawing A indicates a pair of flat shanks provided with lugs A and having curved offset pointed gripping jaws A at their lower ends. The upper end of one s hank is bifurcated and the end of the other 1 shank is provided with a tongue which is adapted to fit in the bifurcation, and be bent down over the side of the shank, so as to securely lock the shanks together, so that they can be readily secured in an ordinary handle B. 4
The gri ping jaws are provided with a ertures in a llnement with each other, in w ich is secured a rivet C on which is mounted, between the jaws a rocker member D which is rovided with an intervening cut out portion forming a jaw D which is adapted to co-act with the jaws A when placed over a tack. One end of the member D being provided with an enlargement D which is engaged by the lugs A, so as to prevent the jaws from cutting ofi the head of the tack, when the lever is pressed downward. A lug D is formed on the member D, to the other side of the pivoted oint which is adapted toengag the shank w en the tool is used for drawin a staple. The member D being providewith a cam surface D adapted to engage the floor or wood in which the tack is driven, and with a curved bearing surfac for engaging he floor or wood into which the staple is driven when used for drawing a staple.
T e operation of thetool for drawing a tack is as follows :The tool is placed over a tac'lj as shown in Fig. 1, and by ressing handle rearwardly and downward the point of the jaw A will be forced under the head of the tack, and at the same time the jaw D of the member D will be forced under the other side of the head, and as further pressure is applied to the handle, it will ride on the cam surface of the member, the lug A being brought into engagement with the enlargement D which forms astop Which revents thejaws from cutting the head off t e tack, as it is pulled out.
The operationfor drawing a staple is as follows :-The jaw D is forced under the cross 7 1 bar of the staple, and as pressure is applied to the handle, the shanks are brought into engagement with the lug D which prevents it from moving any further, and as further ressure is applied, the jaw D will be forced further under the staple and drawn upwardly as the curved bearing surface rides over the floor which will lift the staple out without any dan er of breaking the same.
Having thus fu 1y described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a tack and staple puller, the combination'with a air of shanks provided with lugs adapted to e secured together having offset curved pointed jaws at their lower ends, of a handle secured over said shank, a rocker I brought into e11 member pivotally mounted between said for holding sa jaws, having a curved bearing surface at one end and a curved cam at the other end, said 5 cam surface being rovided with an enlargement, a co-acting aw formed on said member, said lug and enlargement adapted to be gagement with each other, id jaws apart.
