Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
.IEREMIAII CLARK MESSER AND IRWIN JOHNSON DEEN, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
PLOW.
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
Serial No. 409,213.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JEREMIAH CLARK MESSER and IRWIN JOHNSON DEEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to plows and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is .to provide a plow with a standard pivoted to the beam and adapted to be swung in alinement to the beam. A means is carried by the beam which may be o erated for swinging or adjusting the standard upon the beam. The beam is ada ted to carry a swee or any other form ofp blade and an adjustalgle heel is provided which is located in the rear of the beam and standard and to which is journaled a heel disk. The forward end of the beam is provided with a series of clevis supports to which swingle or double trees may b'e attached as desired.
In the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the plow. Fig. 2 is a rear' elevation of the lower portion of the plow. Fig. 3 is a to plan view of the forwardportion of the plhw beam; and Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of a standard used upon the plow.
The plow consists of the beam l to the forward end of which is attached-a series of clevis-supports 2. The standard 3 is pivoted to the rear end of the beam 1 and the low blade 4 is attached to the lower end o the said standard. The upper side portions of the standard 3 are spaced apart and are located upon the opposite side of the beam 1. The u per end portions of the standard 3 are provi ed with elongated slots 5, The rearwardly disposed lug 6 is attached to the beam 1. The links 7 connect the lower end of the handles 8 with the lower end ofthe beam 1 and the links9 connect the upper portions of the handles 8 with the beam 1. The block 10 is secured between the lowerportions of the handles 8. The shaft 11 is journaled for rotation in the lugs 6 and block 10. The upper end of the shaft 11 is provided with a hand-wheel 12. The intermediate portion of the shaft 11 is screw threaded as at 13 and an internally threaded block 14 engages the thread 13. The block 14 is rovided with laterally projecting pins 15 w ich'lie in the elongated slots at the upper portions of the standard 3. The cross piece 16 is secured be- 'tween the handles 8 and is provided with a rearwardly extending lug 17. The heel piece 18 is pivoted to the links 7 and the lower end of the rod 19 is pivoted to said heel piece. The upper portion of the said rod 19 passes through a perforation in the lug 17 and is adapted to be engaged by a set screw 20 which passes transversely through one side of the lug 17, The heel disk 21 is located at the rear end of the heel piece 18 and may be j ournaled for rotation upon the pin 22 or the said pin 22 may be tightened up so as to retain the said heel disk against rotation.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that a plow is provided with a standard which may be adjusted to a nicety in the line of draft `while the plow is in motion or at rest, whereby, the blade carried -by the standard may b e presented to the soil at any desired angle of inclination. Also, an adjustable heel-piece is provided and means for securing said heel-piece in its adjusted position is also provided. The parts are of simple construction and of com act arrangement anddo not interfere with the operation or efficiency of the implement. v
Having described our invention what we .claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is A plow comprising a beam, a standard pivotally connected with the beam, handles attached to the beam, a cross-piece located between the handles behind the beam, a lug attached to the beam and having a journalbearing, a threaded shaft journaled at its upper portion in said lug and at its lower end upon the said cross-piece, means mounted upon said shaft and engaging the standard for swinging the same, said cross-piece having rearwardly disposed lugs, a heel-piece pivotally mounted at the lower ends of the handles, a wheel journaled to said heel-piece, and a link pivotally connected at its lower end to said heel-piece and being-adjustably secured to the rearwardly extending lugs of the cross-piece.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
