SAMUEL N. HENOH AND WVALKER A. DROMGOLD, OF YORK, PA.
CULTIVATOR SPRING-"HOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,821, dated January 13, 1885. Application filed September 29, 1884. (No model T0 at whom it may concern Be it known that we, SAMUEL N. Hanna and WALKER A. DROMGOLD, citizens of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivator Spring-Hoes; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View of our device in one position, and Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is also a side view in another position, and Fig. 4. is a front view.
This invention has relation to improvements in cultivator teeth in which a spring and hinged arms are employed for throwing the tooth or point to a working position after the same has been engaged or encountered by a rock or other obstacle; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the plow-beam, which may be of the ordinary construction ,having its rear end curveddownwardly, as shown.
B indicates the shovel or point standard, which is of angular form, and is preferably of loop form for the passage of the securing-bolt of the point or shovel, the shovel being secured to the long arm thereof by means of the bolt b and nut If. The short arm f of this angular standard extends rearwardly from the beam A, and is connected with a springactuated lever, F, by means of a connecting-arm, G. This arm G is composed of two parallel arms f, which are pivotally connected at one end to the outer sides of similar arms, f, of the lever F, and at their opposite ends to the outer sides of the short branch f of the standard B. The lever F, which is composed of the two parallel arms is pivoted near its upper end to the plow-beam A, one of the arms being arranged at each side of the said beam.
The upper end of this lever F is also slightly curved backward at its upper end and connected to the rear end of a horizontal rod, D. This rod is supported above the plow-beam by a vertical bracket,0, secured thereto, having an eye for the passage of the said rod. Around this rod is arranged a spiral or other suitable spring, E, having its hearing at one end against the said bracket, and the opposite end bearing against a disk, (1 which is held upon the threaded end of the rod by means of a nut, d. Thus it will be seen that when the rod has been drawn rearwardly by the blade engaging an obstacle the spring will be expanded until the lower end of the standard has been carried sufficiently rearward to break the joint f 3 between the connecting-arm and the pivoted lever-section, thereby relieving the blade from the danger of being broken by the obstruction encountered but the moment the point or shovel leaves the obstruction the spring will react upon the rod, through the medium of the disk d carrying the same forward-and returning the parts to their normal positions.
Near the lower end of the lever-section F, and between its branches f which extend, respectively, on opposite sides of the curved portion of the plow-beam A, is secured by means of a short transverse bolt a hexagonal nut, g. The aperture of this nut is eccentric, and is designed to engage the forward curved edge of the said beam. By means of this hexagonal stop it will be seen that a greater or less pitch may be given to the point.
Having described our invention, what we claim is- V 1. The combination, with the plow-beam and angular standard, of the connecting-arm, pivoted lever having the adjustable stop interposed between its branches, and means for operating the same, substantially as specified.
2. The pivoted lever carrying the eccentric hexagonal nut, and adapted to be connected at its lower end with a pivoted plow-standard, and at its opposite end with spring-actuated devices, substantially as specified.
8. The combination, with the plow-beam, of the bracket 0, disk d nut d, spiral spring E, rod D, and devices for connecting the rear end of the same with apivoted plow blade or point, arm of the standard, substantially as shown IO substantially as specified. and described.
4. The combination, with the plow-beam, of In testimony whereof we affix our signatures the curved shovel-standard pivoted at its an in presence of two witnesses.
