To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS Wins, a citizen of the United States, residin at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and tate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in g-Crates, of which the folowmg 1s a spec cation.
My mventlon relates to im rovements in egg crates and more particular y to that class which is provided with stalls tobe occu ied by individual articles to'be carried, suc as eggs, fruit, glass bottles, etc.
Theprimary object of my invention is to rovide what I have chosen to term a co- N ler which is strong and durable combined with low cost of roduction and using as small an amount 0 material as is possible.
I ave found in the practice of my invention that it is essential that all materials be made up in such shape so as to be light in weight and so that the cofiller can be packed in as small a (sipace as possible to save space in storage an shipping, and also to obtain the lowest freight rates. I accomplish theseresults by the means as ointed out in the following specification an claims. y
In a general way, my invention consists of aco-filler-made of paper board or sheets of any suitable material and formed with in-' dents and reinforcements, such filler being adapted to be placed at the lower and upper ends of aseries of collapsible stalls or compartments to support them in a suitable inclosure when the latter is u right or inverted. These fillers can be made irect from different kinds of pulp used for making paper or straw board, pulp board, paper, veneered wood, metal, composition, or any other thin, dugalbhla1 and flexible mateailal.

this crate are nested a series of compartment fillers '13 having horizontal partitionfloors 3 all of ordina construction. At the upper and lower en s of the series of compartment fillers are what I'have chosen to term cofillers C which serve the purpose of cushion ing the contents of the partition fillers when the case is upright or inverted. The co-fillers which involve the new features of my invention are of similar construction.
Each co-filler consists of a sheet of suitable material rolled, pressed or otherwise formed with a series of longitudinal indents D which are j oined' by intervening webs E between them, and transverse reinforcements F across said sheet.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the reinforcements F areplaced at each end of the sheet while in Fig. 3 a third transverse reinforcement 4 is provided between the ends of the sheet and across said indents, the latter being arranged in two arallel rows 5. The
indents are substantial y V-shaped, the sides 6 and 7 and ends 8 being slightly curved at 9 where theyv join the sheet and connect together. The shapes of the indents with the curved joints as described permit a number of co-fillers to be packed snugly together with substantially no intervemng waste spaces. When the .co-fillers are made by rolling, pressing or stamping, the reinforcements are slig t tened as illustrated in Fi 4 in order'to take up the excess material w on the indents are reinforced.
As illustrated in Figs.- 1 and 2 the indents ly crimped and then flatthe eggs or other articles in the compart ments to. rest upon.
The fillers are perforated at 10..so that the thumb or fingers of the hand can be inserted for the purpose of lifting or unpacking them from a case. ably arranged in diiierent positions so as to be staggered as related to each other when they are'packed for storage or shipping. A device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination with a suitable inclosure, a compartment filler in said inclosure, and a single piece cushioning co filler co-acting with said compartment filler to form individual stalls, said eo-filler having a sheet formed with a series of substantially V- shaped supportin indents with intervening webs between t em, and transverse reinforcements across the ends of said webs, for the purposes s ecified.
4. A device of t 1e class set forth, comprising, in combination with a suitable inclosure,

5. A device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination with a suitable inclosure, a compartment filler in said inclosure and a single-piece cushioning co-filler across said compartment filler, consisting of a sheet having supporting indents below the spaces in said compartment filler, webs between said supporting indents and below the ends of the walls of said compartment filler, and reinforcements across said supporting indents strengthening said indents under a load.
