compressors that are operated by wa er,
alternatelyadmitted to a cylinder through an inductlon valve and exhausted therefromthrough an eduction'valve which is operated by hydraullc pressure preferably controlled `by the4 induction valve, as for example in the automatic air compressor illustrated and described 1n Letters Patent No. 835,291,
anted to me November 6, 1906. The4 nction of the eduction valve', is to control the exit of water from the cylinder and the valve is operated by hydraulic pressure alternately admitted to and exhausted from a pipe, the special objects of the present'in vention being to simplify and cheapenthe e type lllustrated in my said former patent and. to
. im rove their Operation in use.y
ith these and other objects in viewI have devised the simple and novel eduction valve, of which the following description in connection with the accompanying ydrawing is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts:
Figure 1 is a vertical section'illustrating my novel valve in the closing position; Fig. 2 a similar view showing the valve in the o en positlon; F1g. 3 a vertical section on t e line 3 3 1n Fig.v 2, looking in the direction ofthe arrow; Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views lllustrating variant forms ofthe plunger` detached; and Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view' corresponding with Fig. 4.
10 denotes-the body or case of my novel valve, which may be of any ordinary or referred constructlon and may if referr'e be cast integral with the base of t eair compressor or other device in which the valve is `used. .The body is provided with a longitudinal openin through it which is indicated by 12 and w ch 1s lntersected by a central o ening, indicated by 13, at a right angle t reto.
14 denotes a plunger or valve proper which is adapted to reciprocate in the central Opening and is provlded with a central bore 15 which closely receives a pipe 16 exdinal opening. l Y
The specia construction of the plunger is ample, the bore may be a hole drilled or cast therein and nished and it may or may not be lined with a piece ofL tubing. In'Fig. 3 I
the bore is lined with a tube 19. In Fig. 4 I
have illustrated a form of plun er having its interior cored out as at v17 for lghtness, and having a hole 18 at its upper end mto whlch Fi 5 Ihave illustrated a plunger having an un ined bore. -The outer end of the plungeris provided with stem 20 which passes througha guide arnL21 extending from the body and preferably with a hub 22 adapted to engage the guide arm to limit the upward movement of the plunger and prevent the possibility of its being thrown out from the 23 vdenotes a spring surrounding the stem and bearing against the guide arm and the plunger, which may or may not be used. to msure the return of the plunger to the closing position when water -is withdrawn from not of the essence of the invention. For ex tending from the body across the longitu- I have illustrated a form. Ofplunger in which l a tube 19 is forced with a drive it, and in Pips 16, as will be more fully explained.
ractice I find that the valve works perectly without any s rin its own welght insuring its return to t e c osing position the instant the pressure is relieved.
In o eratlon, the water passes alternately throu h opening 12 and through pipe 16. The ow of water maybe controlled by an automatic induction valve, which however and is not shown.
supposing my novel valve to be'used 1n connection with an air compressori When I the plunger is in the :position shown 1n F1 s.
forms no portion of the present invention emptied, \the water is Withdrawn from bore 15 and pipe 16, which allows the plunger to 1. Water is now permitted to enter the height. When the water has reached the re uired height, the flow of water into the cytn drop and close opening l12, as shown in Fig.'
der is cut Oif and water is again caused' o opening and a second opening at right I 3o .closing position.
to ow through .pipe 16. This raises the plunger again to t e position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and allows the cylinder to empty again, .these o erations. being continuously repeated and t eplunger belng alternately ralsed by the A assa e of water through pipe 16 to permit t e cy der to be emptied and dropping when the water is withdrawn from p'pe 16 to close the valve and revent the passage of water from the cylin er. I
lHaving thus described my invention I claim: l 1. A valve of the character .described comprising a body having a longitudinal o ening to permit the passage of water t erethrough anda secon opening at right angles thereto, a plungerl in said second opening adapted to be moved out of yalinement -withD the longitudinal opening, said plunger` having a central bore and a pipe extending across the longitudinal opening and engaging the bore, whereby when water passes through said pipe the plunger is raised'to .the open ositlon, and when the pressure is relieved t e plunger drops to the 2. A valve" comprisingga body having a longitudinal angles thereto, a plunger 1n said second opening provided with a central bore and a f the character ydesciribed.
pipe extending across the longitudinal openlng and e aging the bore, substantially as described, or the purpose specified.
33A valve of the character described comprising a body having a longitudinal o ening, a second opening at right angles lt ereto, a plunger in said second opening arm extending lfrom the body through which the stem asses, a pipe extending across the longitu 'nal opening and engaging the bore and a spring engaging the guide arm and the plunger to insure return of the plunger to the closing position when pressure in the pipe is relieved.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature,
, in presence of two witnesses.
