Description

Hm-894,881. PATENTED AUG. 4, 1908. w. GORDON. I
BOOT AND $1105.,
7 APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 28,.1903.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT oFFroE.
WILLIAM GORDON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY COMPANY, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BOOT AND SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. .4, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GoRDoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to boots and shoes and more particularly to an improved;
boot or shoe especially adapted for use by miners.
Miners boots or shoes are subjected to extremely rough usage and rapidly become worn out especially at the heel and shank portions of .the upper, the wearing out of these portions of the shoe upper being due principally to the fact that the shoes are used to kick down and dislodge loose masses of ore. The kicks are delivered with the heel of the shoe and in order to render the shoes more strong and durable it has been proposed to protect the counter portion of the shoe upper and also the heel by means of a metallic counter and heel protector consisting of a sheet of metal secured to the shoe and shaped to cover the counter portion of the upper and the heel. This metallic counter and heel protector does not, however, protect the shank portions of the upper and the shoe is rapidly worn out at these points by contact with the ore.
The object of the present invention is to provide a shoe especially adapted for use by miners in which both the counter portion and the shank portions of theupper are protected so that the shoe is'rendered more durable and can be used in kicking down ore without bringing the up er into contact with the ore and without lia ility of injury to the instep of the foot of the wearer.
With this object in view the invention consists in a boot or shoe having a metallic counter protector covering the counter ortion of the upper and shank protecting pa sof flexia ble material such as leather covering the shank portions of the upper. The metallic counter rotector may be of any suitable form and secured to the shoe in any desired manner, but is preferably combined with a metallic heel protector, suchfor instance as is disclosed in the patent to Gordon and Warren No. 706,551, dated August 12, 1902, as thereby a stronger and more durable shoe is produced. The shank protecting pads are of flexible material as thereby the flexibility of this portion of the up er is preserved and the shoe is as comfortab e as when the pads are omitted. Also there is no danger of the pads being bentor broken and caused to cut through the u per and into the foot of the weareras woul be the case if the pads Were of metal. The metal counter protector and the shank protecting pads thoroughly protect those portions of the shoe which are subjected to the roughest usage and while increasing the strength and durability of the shoe do not render it stiff and uncomfortable to the foot of the wearer.
Theinvention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawin in which Figure 1 is a view 1n side e ovation of a shoe embodying the same and Fig. 2 a cross .sectional view taken on the line 2-2 Fig. 1. Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the upper and 2 the sole of a miners pegged shoe which except for the metallic heel and counter protector and the shank protecting pads hereinafter described is of Well known construction. The counter portion of the shoe upper is protected by a metallic counter protector 3 shaped to surround the counter portion of the shoe and formed integral with a metallic heel protector 4. The counter and heel rotector illustrated is the same as that disc osed in the patent to Gordon and Warren above referred to and is secured to the shoe by the heel attaching nails and by rivets 5 passing through the upper edge of the counter protector. The shank portions of the shoe upper are covered by shank protecting pads 6 of leather, Which are secured to the upper by lines of stitches and by the rivets 7. These pads at their rear ends extend beneath the counter protector 3 so that the counter protector and pads form a continuous covering for the counter and shank portions of the shoe upper. By ex- .tending the rear ends of the pads beneath the counter protector a portion of the pads *is protected from injury so that not only is a continuous covering for the counter and shank portions of the shoe upper provided, but the flexible pads are more securely held in place on the shoe and a stronger and that the pegs which secure the outsole pass through the pads. The pads being of leather, are flexible, and thoroughly protect the shank portions of the shoe upper and the instep of the foot of the wearer without rendering the shoe stiff and uncomfortable and in combination with the metallic counter protector cover and protect those portions of the shoe upper which would otherwise be quickly worn out by contact with the ore.
Having thus described my invention 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A boot or shoe having a metallic counter protector permanently secured to the shoe and covering the counter portion of the upper and shank protecting pads of flexible material also permanently secured to the shoe and covering the shank portion of the upper, and extending at their rear ends beneath the counter protector whereby the counter protector and pads form a continuous covering for the counter and shank portions of the upper, and the counter protector forms a covering for a portion of the pads,
, substantially as described.
and stitches and rivets passing through the pads and the shoe upper for permanently securing the pads to the shoe, the pads extending at their rear ends beneath the counter protector whereby the counter protector and pads form a continuous covering for the l counter and shank portions of the upper, and the counter protector forms a covering for a portion of the pads, substantially as described.
3. A boot or shoe having a lunate reinforcing pad of flexible material stitched to the shank portion of the upper and terminating at the ball of the sole, and a n'ietallic counter protector overlapping the rear end of said pad and permanently secured in place by fastenings engaging the counter protector, the pad, and the shoe upper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I a'lllx my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM GORDON.
