To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, OHARLES SPIRO, citi a novel and improved construction of sup:

orting frame adapted to carry both the type liars and the keys so that these members may be jointly removed from the frame of themachine and another su port carrying type and'keys of a difierent c ar acter, such,

for instance, as in a different language or design, readily substituted, thus permitting the assembling of the frame and carriage and also the type bars and key leversindependently of each other sothat they may be removed whenever desired to furnish the machine with any particular design or character of type therein.

'- A further object of the invention is to provide an improved method of mounting the type bars upon a flat or straight plate so that they may be closely. nested and lie in parallellines upon-the type rest while each is in proper alinement with the printing point.

, Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended clairns.

preferably by means of. the ball bearings 5, this carriage beingprovided with the usual platen 6 and paper guide 7, as shown in Fig. 1. The-parts so far described may be of any desired construction ordinary in'the art.

Within the frame 1 a supportin plate 8 for the type and key bars is removalo y mounted in any desired manner, for instance, by ways 9 formed at opposite sides of the frame. This plate is preferably fiat or straight as distin guished from a curved or segmental structure and may be supported in position by different means, arms or latches 10 being herein shown for that purpose] These arms are pivotallymounted upon a balancing bar 11 by means of the pivots 12 so that a projection 13 from the arm is adapted to en age slots 14 disposed at the opposite sides 0 the plate 8. A finger piece 15 is provided upon the latch arms for the purpose of readily shifting the same. The balancing bar carrying these arms is provided at its opposite ends with pivots 16 mounted in suitable bearings in the frame 1 and is provided with one or more tension springs 17 extending from a connection 18 carried by the bar to a point 19 upon the frame for the purpose of counterbalancing the ,weight of the parts carried by this bar. 7

For the purpose of shifting the plate 8 and the parts carried thereby in a vertical plane when connected to the balancing bar, a shift key 20 is provided and pivotally mounted at 21, whiletho inner end 22 thereof is provided with a link 23 pivotally connected to the key and the balancing bar, as shown in Fig. 1.

- The type bars 24 mounted upon the shifti-ng date are each provided with a plurality of c aracters 25 at their free ends and are mounted upon the plate by means of brackets 26 of ordinary construction carrying the extended or broad bearings of the bar. Having described my invention what I plaim end desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
