To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BARTHOLOMEW E.
-h lGSHEEHY, a citizen of the United States,
each form holder constituting a separate unit adapted to use in addressing or similar ma chines, or wherever it is desirable to'have words or phrases held together as a unit for printing purposes.
My invention provides a simple and inexpensive form holder adapted to retain the separate pieces of type in locked position. It is also soconstructed that changes in wording or lettering may readily be made when desired.
My unit form holders are adapted to printing addresses, dividend or pay-roll checks, bills and the like, orin larger sizes for longer documents as, for instance, circular letters.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a form holder in position in a frame or track adapted to hold and feed such unit form holders for the purpose of printing. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the frame ofi a form holder open for the reception. of type and without the lower flanges for retaining it upon a track. Fig. 3-is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig.1 showing the type, line spacing leads andlocking devices. ig. 4 is' a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1 showing the type, quads and reglets in position and the tightening device therefor. Fig.- 5 is a perspective view of the integral spring tightening-device.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the unit form holder, having a bottom 2 side3-, ends 4, releasableside strips '5 and the topreleas able strips 6. From the ends ofltheform holder 1 (Fig. 1), extend the flanges v7 adapted to slide in and be retained by the grooves 8 in the track or holder 9.

which extend from its apex 18 and have the side notches or grooves 19.
The frame of my form holder 1 ispreferably made from an integral sheet of tin bent into the box-like sha e illustrated in Fig. 2. The metal of which t e frame is made should be capable of bending many times without breaking at the bending lines. To set up the type in the form holder in the first instance, the sides 3. and ends 4 should be in position indicated in Fig. 2, and they remain in that position during the use of the form holder even when changes are being made in the arrangement of the lettering. The top pieces 6 and side strips 5 are left in straight, extended position as also illustrated in Fig. 2, to facilitate the setting of the t e. When the type 10, quads 11 and reg ets 12 are placed in position with the s acing leads 15, they are eld together, loc ed by the engagement of ribs 14 on the spacing leads 15 in grooves 13 in the type, quads and reglets. The spring pieces 16 serve to crowd the separate pieces of type, etc., to ether and .prevent .their working loose. The notches 19 are wider than ribs 14, so as to ermit the wings 1 7 to spread. In placing t e type, of course, the lines are set in order, beginning with the line next to the side 3. When the type and spacing pieces are all in position, the top strips 6 and side retaining strips 5 are bent downward and inward to the position shown in Fig. 1 to retain the contents of the holder locked in position.
The flanges 7 extendin from the bottom of the frame, may be ma e'integral with the rest of the frame, as indicated in Fig. 1, and
theyare adapted to fit into the grooves 8 of the track 9 so that the unit frame holders may be held upon said track and fed in orderto the printing device by gravity or propriate feeding means.
To chan e the arrangement of the type in any unit or'm holder, the releasable side strips 5 and the top releasable strips 6 are bentoutward tothe position shown in Fig. 2 to give ready acoessto the contents.
' What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A form holder-made from an integral any appiece of metal having sides, a bottom, ends N and top strips, 9. side strip and a top strip and vice versa.
2. 'A form holder made from an integral piece of metal having a bottom, ends and topstrips, a top strip being adapted to be shifted from open to closed position to release or retain the type, and vice versa.
3. A form holder made from an integral piece of metal having sides, a bottom, ends and top strips, a side strip and top stri being adapted to be shifted from open to c osed position to release or retain the ty e and vice Versa, and an outwardly exten ing flange adapted to engage a holder or track.
4. A form holder made from an integra. piece of metal having a bottom, ends and top strips, a top strip being adapted to be shifted from opento closed position to release or retain the type and vice versa, and an outwardly ex- 20 tending flange adapted to engage a holder or track.
