FOLDING IRON ING-BOARD.l
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application led .Tune 10, 1907. Serial No'. 378,153.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KEEsGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lookout, in the county of Modoc and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Ironing-Boards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing boards and particularly to a folding board and one which may be easily folded and unfolded and one which will be simple and effective and yet easily handled by man or Woman. This object I accomplish by means of a folding under-sup ort of simple construction, a means for loc ring the same in its operative position and by such other and further constructionA as will appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device as it appears when in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view as the device appears in folded position. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device in its folded position. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the lower end of a brace member.
Referring more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings 1 represents the ironing board proper. Disposed on the under side of said board is a folding support construction as follows z-Hinged to said board on the under side thereof near the inner end are sup orting members 2 having a cross base mem er 3 resting normally on the floor 5, lSaid supporting members 2 extend normally vertical and are provided with an upper cross bar abutting against back stops 4 secured to the under side of the board 1. Pivotally secured to the members 2 are oblique members 6 having a cross base member 7 resting normally on the floor 5.
Pivotally mounted on a pivot member 6b connecting and extending between the members 6 is an oblique brace member 8 formed in two sections and jointed at its pivoted point by means of a bifurcated end 9 on the upper section of the member 8, the upper end of the lower section of the member 8 surrounding said pivot member 6b intermediate the bifurcations of the said end 9. This construction permits both upper and lower sections of the member 8 to be well braced and at the same time to be capable of oscillating freely with respect to each other. Secured to the upper end of the member 8 is a V- shaped member 10 adapted to engage normally with V-shaped notches 11 formed byL` blocks l2 secured, to the under side of the board 1. At the lower end of the brace member 8 is a notch 13 which normally engages with the top of the member 3.
In practice the oblique members 6 and 8 in combination with the upright members 2 form a solid and substantial support for the board 1 and yet leaves a sufficient space beneath the outer end to permit of skirts and similar clothes being drawn thereover. When the board is not in use the notch 13 may be dissociated from the member 3 by reason of the pivotal connection of the lower section of the member 8 to the cross bar 6b, thus permitting the member 10 to be disengaged from the notches 11 and incidentally the members 2 and 6 to be collapsed near the bottom of the member 1. When the said members are so folded the pivot member 6iL of the members 6 lits into a notch 15 in a block 14 secured to the under side of the board 1, and a button 16 is turned over said notch, thus locking the said members in such folded position.
Thus it will be seen that I have produced such an ironing board as will permit of the same being easily folded and placed away when not in use and yet one which is strong, simple and durable for the purpose for which it is designed.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of my device still in practice many small deviations therefrom may be resorted to as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and'useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an ironing board, a board proper, upright supporting members therefor, a cross base member on said upright members, oblique brace members pivotally secured to said upright members, a pivot member connecting and extending between said oblique members, an oblique brace member formed in two sections, a biureated end on one of on the upper section for engaging said sald sections surrounding said pivot niemboard, as set forth.
ber, an end of the other section surrounding In testimony whereof I aiX my signature said pivot member intermediate the bifurin presence of tWo Witnesses.
cations of said biurcated end, the outer ends JOHN KRESGE.
of both sections being free, the lower section Witnesses: being provided With a notched end for en- C. A. MARCUS, gaging said cross base member, and means R. L. NICHOLS.
