STRUCTURAL lmTAL-WORK IN BUILDINGS.
No. 89e,815.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1'908.
Application led February 18, 1907. Serial N o. 357,834.
T o all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HINRIcH B. Scrm'i'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Structural Metal-l Work in Buildings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts.
, This invention relates to structural metalwork of the character employed in constructing steel or iron-frame buildings; the objects thereof being to provide parts to be employed in structures of this character which are of such novel formation as to be interlocked and assembled without the necessity of using either rivets or bolts and nuts, whereby the process of constructing an iron or steel-frame building comprising a plurality of such parts is greatly facilitated and the cost of the structure is considerably lessened.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In .the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification, Figure 1, is a perspective view of a lateral beam forming part of my invention; Fig. 2, an end elevation of a part of a cross-beam having one of the said lateral beams coupled thereto; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional elevation taken on the line 3 3, of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a sectional planview taken on the line 4-4, of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a
similar view showing a double-coupling; Fig. 6, a side elevation, shown partly in section, illustrating the application of my invention as -a' means for coupling horizontal beams'to 'a vertical column; Fig. 7, a perpective view of the en d of a horizontal beam;
g. 8, a sectional planview showing three horizontal beams in position partially connected, and Fig. 9, is a perspective view of part of a vertical column.
In the examples of my invention shown by` the drawings A, illustrates-the lateral beams and IB, the main or cross-beams. The beams A, are provided at each end with a tongue 1;
the said tongues being extended at right angles from .and formed integral with the stem a, of the beam A, the flanges of said beams being cut away as shown. The said tongues are extended in opposite directions and approximately at right angles from' the said stem a, and they may be of any desir- Aable proportion, each being provided on its Y under side and near the point of intersection with the stem a, with a notch 2, for engagement with a part of the stem of an adjacent beam, as will be hereinafter described.
The beams B, are provided with horizontal pockets 3, formed integral with their stems b, and vertical slits 4, adjacent thereto. Where two lateral beams A, are to be connected to a main beam B, as shown by Fig. 5, of the drawings, double pockets 5, are provided, having a slit 6, located between them, the same being formed integral with the stem b, one on each side' thereof. zontal beam, as C, Figs. 6 and 7, is to be connected to a vertical column or post, as D, the latter is provided with vertical pockets 7, and adjacent slits 8; and the horizontal beams, as C, are provided with downwardly gral withand extend approximate-l y at right angles from' the flanges l0; the stems c, be-
stems are sufliciently deep to snugly accommodate the tongues l, whereby they register with said stems; and they are sulficiently high to allow the said tongues to freely enter during the operation of assembling the arts. P In assembling a structure, two cross-beams B, being placed with their pockets 3, opposite to each other, a beam A, is swung between them as shown in Fig. '8, of the drawings, then the same is forced into position at right angles relative to the beams B, as shown by Fig. 4, of the drawings, with the pockets and tongues in snug engagement. Afterwards 4the beam A, is driven downwardly until 1pts notches 2, engage the stemparts of the beam B, immediately beneath them, whereby the main and lateral beams are securely locked together, and gravity holds the beam A, 1 11 place and liability of lateral displacement 1s obviated; thus secure assembl of beams at right angles to each other s effected W1th outl the aid of'straps, brackets, rivetstor nuts and bolts. The horizontal end beams of a structure are also readily connected to their adjacent uprights Without the aid of supplementary means for fastening as shown by a assembled.
I do not conne myself to specific forms of When a horiing'cut away as shown. The pockets of theV Fig. 6,of the drawings. By this mode ofI construction a whole metallic frame Work of. may be quickly and economicallyv extended tongues 9, which arc formed intethe parts nor details of construction. as here- Y ters Patent, is
1. In structural metal-work, the combination with a part having pockets and slits adjacent to said pockets and leading into the said pockets at right angles therewith, and
beams having notched end tongues extending at' right angles thereto, the said tongues engaging the said pockets and when in such engagement extending parallel therewith, substantially as shown and described.
2. In structural metal-work for bildings, the combination with beams having horizontal pockets in their stems and vertical slits adjacent to said pockets, of beams at right angles therewith and having tongues engaging said pockets and extended parallel therewith, substantially as shown and described.
3. In structural metal-work for buildings, the combination with beams having pockets in their stems and slits adjacent to said pockets,- of beams having4 tongues engaging said pockets, the said tongues raving notches engaging over parts of the stems, substantially as shown and described.
4. As a new article of manufacture to be employed as a part of a metallic frame-work of a building, a metallic beam having end tongues at each end thereof, extending in opposite directions Iat right angles thereto, and by reason of their construction and arrangement aifording facility for engaging pockets in the beams next adjacent thereto, substantially as shown and described.
5. As a new article of manufacture to be vemployed as a part of a metallic {raum-work of a building, a metallic beam having end tongues at each end thereof, extending in opposite directions and at right angles thereto, said tongues having each a notch therein, substantially as shown and described.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of February 1907.
