To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEEGORA A. BLU- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Hydrocarbon-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for utilizing hydrocarbon oil for fuel purposes.
The objects I have in view are to provide simple, durable and efficient means whereby hydrocarbon oil, either crude oil, distillate, naphtha, gasolene or kerosene may be burned as fuel either in a cook-stove, bakeoven, furnace or .any other apparatus or place where it is desired to generate heat; to provide such means in such form and of such construction as to avoid the clogging of the burner, or the interference with its perfect operation, or with the perfect combustion of the liquid fuel, or to prevent the perfect distribution of the heat generated therefrom, by reason of any carbonization, or by the coking or caking of the minerals or impurities in the oil.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for burning hydrocarbon, utilizing in connection with the oil a quantity of water, admixing the oil and water so that the same are vaporized together, whereby the vaporization of the water carries up and holds in suspension in'the resultant vapor, all the minerals or impurities in the oil and carries the same outside the burner and advmixes hydrooxygienic gas with the hydrocarbon vapor which arises from the vaporization of the oil and effectuating the com lete and perfect consumption of all cornbustible particles contained in the oil.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hydrocarbon burner comprising a retort having at its top an oil-heating chamber opening downwardly upon a hemispherical deflector or distributer onto which a quantity of water is delivered, and upon which water the heated oil is precipitated, the intermingling oil and water flowing down the surface of the distributor or dome, which is also heated, and passing around the edge thereof into a cup or receptacle formed in the bottom of the retort, and thence out through a bottom outlet, the resultant vapor burning underneath and at the sides of said retort and serving to heat the same; in the provision, in connection with said retort, of an air inlet adapted to supply a draft of air under said distributer or dome which intermingles with the vaporas the same rises from said cup or receptacle and passes out of said bottom outlet; also in the provision of means whereby the vapor as it passes out of said outlet, is intermingled with a further supply of air.
The invention consists further in the constructions and in general and specific combinations of parts, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to drawings forming part of this specification, in which Figure I is a front elevation, portions of the same being broken away to show the construction. Fig. II is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. III is a plan view of the plate in terposed between the retort and the firing or starting pan and supporting the retort on the inner rim of the starting pan. Figf IV is an inverted plan view thereof.
This burner is adapted for use in the firepot of a cook stove, range or furnace or other appliance wherein it is desired to generate heat.

This plate is provided, as shown best in Fig. IV, with three downwardly projecting lugs 7 provided with seats 8 which rest upon the outwardly flared rim of the wall 2. This plate 6 is provided with an annular flange extending preferably outward and downward over a portion of the cavity of the cup 2. The plate 6 is provided with a central opening 9, and either formed integral with the plate 6 or connected there with is the upwardly extending air-tube 1O which, as shown, is in the form of a hollow truncated cone open at both ends. Supported on flanges or ribs 11 formed on the upper face of the plate 6 is the body 12,which is cylindrical in form and open at' its top. The body 12 is provided with a central openthe accompanying ing 13 in its bottom and around this opening is provided an upwardly extending flange 14 forming a cup 15 between the flange and the outer wall of the body 12. The pipe 3 extends up through the conical tube or pipe 10, an opening or inlet 16 being left between the upper end of the tube 10 and the pipe 3 for the inlet of air. This pipe 3 extends a short distance above the end of the tube 10 and supported thereon is a hemispherical dome 17, the pipe 3 opening at the top of this dome 17 Supported upon the rim of the body 12 is a cylindrical cup or body 18 provided with an annular flange 19 adapted to rest within the wall of the body 12 and prevent the displacement of the cup or body 18. This cup or body 18 is open at its top and is provided with a convex bottom 20 provided at its top or apex with an opening 21. Inside the pipe 3 is an oil pipe 22 of sufficiently smaller diameter than the pipe 3 to permit the passage of water through the pipe 3 outside the oil pipe 22. This pipe 22 extends up through the dome or deflector 17 and through the opening 21 in the convex or hemispherical bottom of the cup 18 and extends up into the chamber of the cup 18, and superposed on this upper end is a hemispherical deflector or spreader 23 out of the upper surface upon which the oil pipe discharges. This deflector or distributer 23 is of sufficient diameter to extend out beyond the periphery of the opening 21. The cup or body 18 is closed by a cover 24 resting of its own weight on the top of the cup 18. convex top forming an extension of the chamber 25 of the cup 18.
It will be noted that the dome 17 is a sufiicient distance below the bottom 20 of the cup 18 to form a chamber 26 therebetween.
-The dome 17 is preferably provided with three or more lugs or legs 27 adapted to rest on the bottom 28 of the cup 15, the lugs being preferably equidistantly spaced.
The oil and water pipes 22 and 3 are respectively connected with suitable oil and water supply pipes, not shown; and suitable valves, not shown, are interposed therein for the regulation of the supply of oil and water to the burner.
The operation is as follows:The valve in the oil supply pipe is opened and a quan tity of oil permitted to flow through the pipe 22 up over the spreader 23 and into the chamber 25 of the cup 18. As the oil in the cup 18 reaches the level of the outlet 21 in the convex bottom of the cup 18, the oil flows through this outlet and drops upon the upper surface of the dome 17, passing along such surface through the chamber 26 down into the cup 15, when the cup 15 is filled the oil flows over the wall 14 out through the bottom outlet 13, drops onto the top of the plate 6 and flows out over the edge thereof, over the flange 8 and into the starting pan The cover or cap 24 has a or receptacle 2. When this plan is filled, the supply of oil is shut off and t e oil in the firing pan ignited. The burning of the oil in the firing pan heats the oil in the cup 15 and also heats the plate 6, and the cups and bodies 12 and 18 and the dome 17. As the oil in the cup 15 becomes heated the vapor therefrom passes out the outlet 13 and burns in connection with the flame from the oil in the cup 2; as this vapor commences to burn, the valves in the oil and water supply pipes are opened and the oil flows through the pipe 22 over the spreader 23 and further oil is precipitated from the chamber 25 through the outlet 21. This heated oil precipitated through the outlet 21 falls on the water de livered through the pipe 3 onto the surface of the dome 17 and intermingles therewith, and the intermingled water and oil in the cup 15 vaporizes, intermingling the hydro oxygenic vapor of the water with the vapor of the oil, carrying up in suspension all of the impurities and minerals in the oil and discharging the same through the outlet 13.
Air is fed to the vapor rising from the cup 15 by means of the draft tube 10. This draft tube, as shown, opens into the central opening in the firing pan and is preferably connected with the draft opening of the stove, range or furnace in which the burner is used. The air passing through the tube 10 is admitted into the chamber under the dome 17, through the outlet 16 and intermingles with the vapor from the oil and water as the same passes out through the outlet 13. The tapered chamber formed within the tube 10 serves to accelerate the draft in the chamber under the dome 17. Air is fed to the burning vapor as the same burns below the body 12 and at the sides thereof through the air-outlet 29 formed between the plate 6 and the top of the wall 2 of the starting pan.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent Y of the United States is 1. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a retort having a closed top and a vapor outlet in its bottom discharging downwardly out of said retort, a dome in said retort, a distributer above said dome, means for supply ing oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said distributer intermingles, and means for supplying air into the vapor from said oil and water as such vapor passes into said outlet.
2. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a retort having a closed top and a vapor outlet in its bottom discharging downwardly out of said retort, a dome in said retort, a distributer above said dome, means for supplying oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said distributer intermingles, means for supplying air into the vapor from said ing oil onto said distributer, means for sup plying water on said dome with which the oil from said distributer intermingles, means for supplying air into the vapor from said oil and water as such vapor passes into said outlet, and a starting pan below said vapor outlet. I
4. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a closed top and a vapor outlet in its bottom discharging downwardly out of said retort, a dome in said body, a second chamber above said dome, an outlet from said second chamber into the chamber of said hollow body, said outlet opening above said dome, means for supplying oil in said second chamber, means for suppyling water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, and means for supplying air into the vapor from said oil and water as such vapor passes into said outlet.
5. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a vapor outlet in its bottom, a dome in said body, means forming a second chamber above said dome, an outlet from said second chamber into the chamber of said hollow body, said outlet opening above said dome, means forsupplying oil in said second chamber, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, means for supplying air to the vapor arising from said oil and water as such vapor passes into said outlet, and a starting pan below said vapor outlet. r
6. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a vapor outlet in its bottom, a dome in the chamber of said hollow body, means forming a second chamber above said dome, said second chamber provided with an outlet in its bottom communicating into said first chamber above said dome, a distributer in said second chamber above the outlet therein, means for supplying oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles,
- and means for supplyingair to the vapor arising from said oil and water.
7. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a vapor outlet in its bottom, a dome in the chamber of said hollow body, means forming a second chamber .above saiddome, said second chamber provided with an outlet in its bottom communicating into said first chamber above said dome, a distributer in said second chamber above the outlet therein, means for supply ing oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, means for supplying air to the vapor arising from said oil and water, and a starting pan below said vapor outlet.
8. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a vapor outlet in itsbottom, a dome in the chamber thereof, an open ended tube extending into the chamber of said hollow body and terminating below said dome, an outlet being left at the bottom A of said body about said open ended tube, a
flange or plate extending outward from said tube adapted to direct the vapor from said outlet outward from said tube, means forming a second chamber formed above said first named chamber, the bottom thereof being provided with an outlet into said first chamber, means for supplying oil in said second chamber, and means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles.
9. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a vapor outlet in its bottom, a dome in the chamber thereof, an open ended tube extending into the chamber of said hollow body and terminating below said dome, an outlet being left at the bottom of said body about said open ended tube, a flange or plate extending outward from said tube adapted to direct the vapor from said outlet outward from said tube, means forming a second chamber formed above said first named chamber, the bottom thereof being provided with an outlet into said first chamber, a distributer in said second chamber, means for supplying oil on said distributer, and means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles.
10. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a vapor outlet in its bot tom, a dome in the chamber thereof, an open ended tube extending into the chamber of said hollow body and terminating below'saiddome, an outlet being left at the bottom of said body about said open ended tube, a flange or plate extending outward from said tube adapted to direct the vapor from said outlet outward from said. tube, means forming a second chamber formed above said first named chamber, the bottom thereof provided with an outlet into said first chamer, means for supplying oil in said second chamber, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, and a starting pan surrounding said open ended tube below said vapor outlet. 4 i

A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a vapor outlet in its bot tom, a dome in the chamber thereof, an open gee ended tube extending into the chamber of said hollow body and terminating below said dome, an outlet being left at the bottom of said body about said open'ended tube, a flange or plate extending outward from said tube adapted to direct the vapor from said outlet outward from said tube, means forming a second chamber formed above said first named chamber, the bottom thereof being rovided with an outlet into said first cham her, a distributer in said second chamber, means for sup lying oil on said distributer, means for supp ying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, and a starting pan surrounding said open ended tube below said vapor outlet.
12. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a central chamber and a central outlet in its bottom, an annular receptacle being formed about said outlet, means forming a second chamber formed above said first chamber and having a central o ening in its bottom, a dome in said first chamber below the outlet from said second chamber, means for supplying oil to said second chamber, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, and means for supplying air to the vapor arising from said annular receptacle.
13. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body having a central chamber and a central outlet in its bottom, an annular receptacle being formed about said outlet,
means forming a second chamber formed above said first chamber and having a central opening in its bottom, a dome in said first chamber below the outlet from said second chamber, means for supplying oil to said second chamber, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, means for supplying air to the vapor arising from said annular receptacle, and a starting pan below said central outlet.
14. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the other, an
'50 annular receptacle being formed in the lower chamber about said vapor outlet, the bottom of the upper chamber provided with a central outlet opening into the lower chamber, a
hemispherical dome in the lower chamber below the last named outlet, means for supply ing oil to said second chamber, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, and
means for supplying air to the vapor arising so from said annular receptacle.

A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the other, an an 05 nular receptacle being formed in the lower chamber about said vapor outlet, the bottom of the upper chamber provided with a central outlet opening into the lower chamber, a hemispherical dome in the lower chamber below the last named outlet, means for supplying oil to said second chamber, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said second chamber intermingles, means for supplying air to the vaor arising from said annular receptacle, and it starting pan below said central vapor out- 16. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the other, an annular receptacle being formed about said central vapor outlet, the bottom of the up per chamber provided with a central opening communicating into the lower chamber, a hemispherical dome in said lower chamber below said last named opening, ahemispherical distributer in said upper chamber above the outlet therefrom, means for supplying oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said distributer intermingles, and means forv supplying air to the vapor arising from said annular receptacle.
17. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the other, an annular receptacle being formed about said central vapor outlet, the bottom of the upper chamber provided with a central opening communicating into the lower chamber, a hemispherical dome in said lower chamber below said last named opening, a hemispherical distributer in said upper chamber above the outlet therefrom, means for supplying oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said distributer intermingles, means for supplying air to the vapor arising from said an nular receptacle, and a starting pan below said central vapor outlet.

A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the other, an annular receptacle being formed about said opening, an open ended tube extending into said body and terminating above said receptacle, an outlet being provided about said tube, a hemispherical dome supported chamber above the end of said tube, a pas sage being provided between said dome and the end of said tube, said upper chamber having a central outlet in its bottom, means for supplying oil in the upper chamber, and means for supplying water on said dome with in the lower which the oil from said upper chamber intermingles.

A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the other, an annular receptacle being formed about said outlet, an open ended tube extending into said body and terminating above said receptacle, an outlet being provided about said tube, a hemispherical dome, supported in said body above said tube, a passage being provided between said tube and dome, the bottom of said upper chamber being provided with an outlet above said dome, ahemispherical distributer in said upper chamber above said outlet, means for supplying oil onto said distributer, and means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said dis tributer intermingles;

A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the other, an annular receptacle being formed about said outlet, an open ended tube extending into said having a central vabody and terminating above said receptacle,
an outlet being provided. about said tube, a hemispherical dome supported in said body above said tube, a passage being provided between said tube and dome, the bottom of said upper chamber being provided with an outlet above said dome, a hemispherical distributer in said upperchamber above said outlet, means for supplying oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said distributer intermingles, and a starting pan surrounding said open ended tube below said vapor outlet.

A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a central vapor outlet in its bottom, and means forming two chambers, one above the. other, an annular receptacle being formed about said central outlet, an open ended tube extending into the lower chamber through said central outlet and terminating above said receptacle, an outlet from said chamber being provided about said tube, a hemispherical dome supand means formingvided between the ported in said body above said tube, a passage being provided between the end of said tube and said dome, a passage being proedge of said dome and the inner wall of said receptacle, the bottom of the upper chamber being provided with a central outlet, a hemispherical distributer in said upper chamber above the outlet therefrom, means'for supplying oil onto said distributer, means for supplying water on said dome with which the oil from said distributer intermingles, a starting pan surrounding said open ended tube below said vapor outlet,
means for deflecting the burning vapor outward from the outlet, and means introducing air to the burning vapor deflected outward thereby.

A hydrocarbon burner comprising two pipes, one within the other, a cylindrical firing pan supported on the outer pipe, said pan having a central opening, an open ended tube supported on said pan and communicating upward from the central opening thereof, a hollow cylindrical body supported thereon, said body provided with a central opening in its bottom through which said tube extends, a receptacle or cup formed in said bottom about said opening, means forming two chambers, said chambers intercommunicating through the center of the bottom of the upper chamber, said inner pipe supplying oil to the upper chamber, a dome in the lower chamber beneath the opening from the upper chamber thereinto, and said outer pipe supplying water thereon.

A hydrocarbon burner comprising two pipes, one within the other, a cylindrical firing pan supported on the outer pipe, said pan having a central opening, an open ended tube sup orted 011 said pan and extending upward therefrom, a hollow cylindrical body supported thereon, said body provlded with a central opening in its bottom through which said tube extends, a vapor outlet being formed about said tube, a receptacle or cup formed in said bottom about said vapor outlet, means forming two chambers intercommunicating through the center of the bottom of the upper chamber, a distributer supported on said inner pipe in said upper chamber and onto which said pipe discharges oil, and a dome in said lower chamberbelow the outlet from said upper chamber and onto which said outer pipe discharges water.

A hydrocarbon burner comprising two chambers, one above the other, and intercommunicating through the bottom of the u per chamber, the bottom of the lower cl iamber being rovided with a receptacle and a vapor out et, means for supplying oil to the upper chamber wherein it is heated and then flows intothe receptacle, means for supplying water to said receptacle, means intermingling air with the vapor arising from said receptacle, whereby the air, and vapor, escape through the va or outlet.

A hydrocarbon urner comprising two chambers, one above the other, the bottom of the up er chamber being convex and rovided w1t an opening at its apex, the ottom of the lower chamber provided with a central vapor outlet, a receptacle or cup formed thereabout, means for supplying oil to said upper chamber, means for supplying water to said receptacle to interming e with the oil from the upper chamber, and means intermingling air to the vapor arising from said receptacle.

A hydrocarbon burner com rising two chambers,'one above the other, t e bottom of the upper chamber being convex and provided with an opening at its apex, a hemispherical dome in the lower chamber, the bottom of said body provided with a central vapor outlet, a receptacle formed about said outlet, an open ended air tube extending up through said outlet and terminating below said dome, means for supplying oil to said upper chamber, and means for supplying wa ter on said dome. 28. A hydrocarbon burner comprising two chambers, one above the other, the bottom of the upper chamber being convex and provided with an opening at its apex, a hemispherical dome in the lower chamber, the bottom of said body provided with a central vapor outlet, a receptacle formed about said outlet, an open ended air tube extending up through said outlet and terminating below said dome, means for supplying oil to said upper chamber, means for supplying water on said dome, and a starting pan surrounding said tube below said outlet.
