Specification of Letters Patent.

Original application filed April 23, 1906, Serial No. 313,222. Divided and. this application filed April 3, 1907. Serial To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEBER K. HANsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logan, in the county of Cache and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Screen, of which the following is a specification.
The present case is a division from copending application, Serial No. 313,222, and the invention covered by the claims of this application relates to screens, particularly useful in connection with the grain separating machine set forth in said co-pending application, but undoubtedly capable of being used in other connections.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel and simple screen that will effectively operate on different classes of seed or grain passed thereover, and effect their proper separation, permitting one type to pass through the screen, and prohibiting the passage of grain of other characters.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the preferred embodiment of the separating screen. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The screen, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 35, consists of a sheet or plate of metal that is transversely corrugated, or in other words, provided. with transverse ribs, which have sets of elliptical openings 36 therein, said openings being formed in the upper sides of the transverse ribs and disposed in staggered relation. The said transverse ribs or corrugations are formed by curving the material at the lower end of each opening upwardly, as shown at 37 and curving the material at the other end downwardly, as shown at 38, the downward curvature of each opening extending be tween the upstanding ends of the openings in advance thereof. This, it is thought, will be clear by reference to Fig. 1. Furthermore because of the arrangement, angularly disposed webs 39 are produced at each end of each opening, saidwebs being joined to longitudinal webs 40 on opposite sides of the openings.
As a result, it Will be noted that the openings are set on an inclination, and if the plate is disposed in an opposite inclination, said openings will be disposed at an inclination in opposition to the path of travel of the grain, and the downwardly inclined or curved portion thereof disposed in front of each opening, serves as a guide that turns long rolling kernels endwise, and adjusts them to pass through the openings, if small enough. Of course said openings may be made of different sizes for different characters of grain. The screen has been found particularly useful, however in separating oats and rye from wheat.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein. described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be under stood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2- A screen comprising a sheet having elongated openings therethrough, said openings being disposed in transverse rows, and each opening being located lengthwise of the sheet, the openings in adjacent rows being disposed in staggered relation, with the front ends of those in one row located in close association with the material between the openings of the adjacent row and wider than the distance between the said openings, the portions of material in rear of each opening being upwardly converted and the portions of material in advance of each opening being downwardly concaved, the convexity of one portion leading into the concavity of the adjacent portion transversely of the plate, said configuration producing transversely disposed upstanding ribs on the sheet with the openings located at an inclination in the upper sides of said ribs.
