I I l INVENTOR cbbaum By I I Aifomey;
HENRY KIRSOHBAUM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HINGE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed December 30, 1907. Serial No. 408,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KIRsoHBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and .State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinges and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for supporting swinging doors, gates, lids, or the like, and my object is to provide means for adjusting the parts of the hinge to accommodate larger or smaller objects.
A further object is to provide a housing for the bearing parts of the hinge and a still further object is to provide ball bearings for the hinge and adjusting mechanism for the bearings.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a detail elevation of a hinge shaft, showing cooperating parts therefor in section, and, Fig. 2 is a plan view of a locking washer used in connection with my improved hinge.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates any suitable form of beam, through which extends the lower end of my improved form of hinge shaft 2, said shaft being secured to the beam in any preferred manner, as by introducing a nut 3 on the lower end thereof and providing a ring 4 for the shaft immediately above the beam, or, instead of securing the shaft to the beam, the same may be secured to a flooring, or any other suitable means.
The shaft 2 is provided with threads 5 throughout its length, on which are adapted to be turned interiorly threaded cones 6, said cones being provided with races 7 to receive bearing balls 8 and extending over each set of the balls, is a bearing box 9, by which means the balls are held in their respective races.
A housing 10 is introduced around the cones and bearing boxes and are provided with shoulders 11 to receive the bearing boxes 9, said housings having straps, or the like, 12 extending outwardly therefrom, to which the gate, or other object is adapted to be secured.
Any number of cones and accessories therefor may be provided on the shaft 2 and spaced any suitable distance apart, the bearing end of the cone adjacent the lower end of the shaft being uppermost, while the bearing end of the remainder of the cones is preferably extended downwardly, thereby directing the major portion of the weight on the lower cone and, by placing said cone adjacent the lower end of the shaft, the greatest weight will be directed against the strongest portion of the shaft.
When the cones are turned onto the shaft 2, and have been adjusted to their proper positions, they are each locked on the shaft by means of a jam nut 13, which is interiorly threaded to engage the threads on the shaft 2, and a collar 14;, which is introduced between the cone and the jam nut, said collar being held against rotation by providing the same with an inwardly extending tongue 15,
which engages a longitudinally disposed slot 16 in the outer face of the shaft 2 and, by providing said slot, it will be readily seen that the collar may be moved longitudinally of the shaft 2, but will be held against rotation thereon. By this construction, it will be readily seen that when the collar 14 has been forced into engagement with the cone 6 by means of the jam nut 13, said cone will be held against rotation and locked in its adjusted position.
The ends of the housing 10 opposite the shoulders 11 are closed in any suitable manner and the threads on the shaft 2 are protected from dust, or grit, by introducing a tubular shield 1.7 around the shaft between the housings 10, thereby completely inclosing said shaft, the shields being preferably constructed in lengths, so that the same may be made interchangeable to fit between the housings when the bearings are adjusted to fit different lengthed doors, or the like.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a i major portion of the weight thereof will bedirected against the strongest part of the hinge. o
What I claim is: v
1. In a hinge of the class described, the combination with a shaft having a longitudinal slot therein, threads extending the full length of said shaft and means to, support said shaft of interiorly threaded cones adapted to engage the threads on the shaft, said cones having races therein, a plurality of balls in said races, bearing boxes for said balls, means to lock the cones in their adjusted positions on the shaft, housings surrounding said cones, shoulders in said housings to receive said bearing boxes straps on said housings, to which an object is adapted to be secured and means carried by the cones extending within the slot of the shaft for holding the cones against rotary movev ment on the shaft.
2. A hinge of the class described, comprising a shaft, threads on said shaft, said shaft having a longitudinally disposed slot therein, interiorly threaded cones adapted to engage the threads on the shaft, bearing balls for said cones, bearing boxes for said balls, housings surrounding said cones, shoulders in said housings to receive the bearing boxes, a collar surrounding said shaft, a tongue on said collar adapted to engage the slot in the shaft and a jam nut adapted to clamp the collar against the cone and lock the cone in its adjusted position and means to secure an object to the housing.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a stationary member, adjustable members carried by the stationary member, means carried by the adjust able members acting in conjunotionwith the' stationary member for holding the adjustable members against rotation, and rotatable hinge members carried by the adjustable members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I HENRY KIRSCHBAUM.
