Be it known that I, BALDWIN H. KANNEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Removable-Cover Sheet Metal Cans, of which the following is a specification. a

My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal pails having removable covers.

The object of my invention is to provide a bailed pail with removable cover, of a simple, strong, eflicient and idurable construction, suitable for use as a shipping package for lard and other articles, in which the removable cover may be tightly and firmly secured i upon the pail so that the pail may be used as a shipping package without the necessity of crating, anc in which the cover may at the same time be conveniently removed when it is desired to open the package and again replacedfor the temporary closing of the pack age while its contents are being used, and in which the removable cover will not only tightly close the package but also serve to brace and stiffen the u per end of the body or" the pail against col apse when the large heavy pail is lifted by the handle in shipment or handling.

My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result. That is to say, it consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.

The ears D are of sheet metal and are securely attached to the bodyof the pail by rivets d or other suitable means. Each of these bail ears is provided with an outwardlyprojecting flange or shoulder d which fits under the annular roll or shoulder a on the body of the pail so that these inte'rengaging shoulders on the pail body and ear will serve to relieve the rivets d from strain, and thus afford a stronger and more secure attachment of the bail ears to the body of the pail. Each of the bail cars has an upwardly projecting lug or member d furnished withan eye (I to'receive the pivot hook f of the bail F, and each of the bail ears is further provided with one or inore, preferably two integral clenching lips (i preferably one on each side of the straight baileye lug d and separated therefrom by upright slits d. These integral lips 61 on the bail car are adapted to be bent or clenched down over the rim of the cover B when the cover is securely locking and holding the cover in place and in tight firm engagement with the ,,upper end or mouth of the pail, so as to effect a tight closureand so as to cause the cover to efl'eotually brace, stiffen and strengthen the upper end of the body of the pail, and so as to cause the two annular rolls a on the -paratively small cost of manufacture, a

so that the pail when made 0 the customary large. size used for shipping lard or other like heavy materials and filled therewith, may be liftedby the bail in shipment or handling without danger of colla sing or injuring the package or breaking o the bail ears. By this means, I am enabled to produce at comtion a body having a slightly flaring or tapering mouth furnished with an external annular curled edgeor roll at its upper end, a removable cover having an outer flange or wall fitting within the flaring mouth of the body andfurnished with an outwardly projecting annular roll or shoulder engagingthe annularroll or shoulder at the upper end of the pail body, and bail ears secured to said body andhaving shoulders engaging said external shoulder on said'body, and provided with a bail eye lug projecting above the cover and with clenching lips' on each side of said lug vand separated therefromfby slits, said clenching lips cooperating with said shoulders on the bail ear and body to securely clamp the cover in place, substantially as specified.

2. In a sheet metal pail, the combination with a body having an annular shoulder at its upper end, of an inside fitting cover having an annular shoulder or rim engaging the annular shoulder on the pail body, and bail ears having bail eye lugs projecting above the cover, said bailears being provided with in tegral clenching lips at the side of said lugs and separated therefrom by slits for locking the cover in place, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with a sheet metal body having an annular exterior shoulder at 'its upper end, of a cover and bail ears secured to said body and provided each with a bail eye lug projecting above the cover and with integral cover holding lips at the side of said lugs and separated therefrom by slits, said bail ears havin'g shoulders fitting under and engaging 'said external shoulder on the .pail body, substantially as specified.

. 4. The combination with a sheet metal body having an annular external shoulder at its upper end, of a cover, and bail ears secured to said body and provided each with a bail eye lug projecting above the cover and with an integral clenching lip, said bail ears having shoulders fitting under and engaging the external annular shoulder on'said body, substantially as specified.

5. The combination with a cover of a vessel body having an external shoulder of bail ears secured thereto and provided'with shoulders engaging said external shoulder on thebody. said bail ears having bail eye lugs projecting above the cover, and clenching lips on each of said lugs and separated therefrom by slits, substantially as specified.
