I minimums-moon Specifieatioii ofLetters Patentufl Patented July 21, 1908.
Applicationfiled April 12, 1907. .Serial No. 367,772.
To all whom it mdQ-concerhf it citizen of the United States, residing atCoalgate, in District 23, Oklahoma, haveinvented a new and useful Combination-Tool, of which The-present invention relates to l merits in devices adapted for use about a' Y --stove, and it has for its object to provide a lifter for the, lids or covers, but it is also adapted for use in handling hot pan s, kettles, andotherp'arts that would otherwise re u re cloth'topreventburning 0 the device that is adapted for use not only-as a the use of a fingers.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will a be hereinafter more fully described, the.
' ticularly in the claims at the end of speci novel features being pointed ,out more parfication.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 'l is a perspective-view of a combination tool of the character described'and constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig.
2 is a view of a port1on of the tool showing the jaws in cooperative relation for engage" ment with a stove lid. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of a portion of the tool showing the mounting for the relativelymovable jaws. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing theconstruotion. and method of mountingtherelatively movable handle portion or grip. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the mode of lifting. the flanged pans with an implement constructed in accordance with my present invention.
H '7 the invention is es ecially adapted for use in v handling stove li s, when the jaws are in Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.
The device in the present embodimentot closed relation, and by reason of the relative movement. of the jaws the device is-adapt'ed for .use in the handling of-pots,-pans and other cooking vessels, and it comprises,-in
T a the present instance, a shank having an intermediate portion 1 which is substantially U-shaped in cross section to form a pair of longitudinal guiding flanges, a -sem1-cylin-' drical portion 2 at one end and'adapted to form a handle grip, and having a toe 3 at its opposite end which is offset from the intermediate portion and arranged at a suitable improve tively fixed and- 'rovide" witha rigid crank-shaped por- [head .15 adapted to cooperate wit angle to enter the usual aperture in the stove lids, thistoe also serving the purpose of a gripping jaw. Thematerial in rear of the toe 3 is cut away at-4in order to admit'the *latter to theaperture in the stove lid, and theportion 5 connecting the toe'to theshank onintermediate. portion is provided'with a longitudinally entendinggslot 6 into which is fitted the-attachmgfortion 7 ofthe jaw 8', a rivet or othensuita epivot-9 serving to supthe art3. i
and the attachingportion of the jaw 8 is revided witha recess 01 socket lflarrange eceflect the desired movements of the role tivel movable "jaw, but it is generally preferab e to manipulate'the jaw by variations in the ipping action of theoperators hand on the andle of the device, and the actuating bar is shown as so actu'atedin the present and cooperating with instance,; a complementaryf'g'rip 13- being"- provided to cooperatewithlthe 'gr-ip2, on the shank, the gripfl3 ,bein pivoted to a relaortion of t e shank, as at 14,
tion airinga laterally turned proection or spondingly formed recess or socket 16 formed in the rear end of the actuating bar, the
- proximating movement of the grips 2 and 13 under the grasp of the hand serving to proximate the aws 3 and 8, and a separating movement of the grips producing a correspondin movement of the jaws. In the present instance, a spring is shown for automatically separating the grips when the hold of the hand is released, the spring shown consisting. of an intermediate convolution or coil 17, and the arms 18 and19 forming continuations of the free'ends of the coil, the extremities of these arms being turned laterally a COIT6* as at 20 and 21, so that they extend in opposite directions and rest in the a ertures 22 and 23 formed in the grips 2 an 13, re spectively. The normal actlon of the spring erates to spread the arms 18 and 19, an t e latter, engaging at the inner sides of the hand grips, serves to produce a corresponding action on the latter, serving to open them and the jaws. The method of mounting the spring 'is advantageous inv that its action serves to retain its laterally turned ends in cooperative relation with the apertures in I the grips, and in manufacturing the device,
the spring can be readily applied by merely tively movable jaw and causing a movement thereby as pressure is applied to the of the latter toward the jaw 3, and when the jaws are in proximated position, they may be readily inserted into the usual opening in the stove lid, and the latter may be handled as desired, and in cases wherein the openings of the lids are worn, the inwardly extending projections may be engaged between the aws Whenever it is desirable to' move pans, pots, and other culinary utensils from place to place, or to position them upon the stove, the-flange or other projecting part of the article to be lifted or moved is inserted between the jaws of the device and gripped and grips, the article being immediately released at the moment the hand gri s are released from the o erators hand. oreover, an im plement o the character herein described may be manufactured 'so cheaply that it may be sold at a lowprice, as its parts may be cast of malleable iron with sufficient accuracy to enable them to properly fit to ether,
the pivots for the movab e jaw an hand grip servin as locks to retain the cooperatmg arts 0 the jaw and grip and the actuating ar or member in cooperative relation, so that only two rivets are em'loyed and the springs may be readily applied by merely compressing their ends during their insertion between the grips, and when their outturned ends spring into the apertures in the grilps, accidental disengagement of the spring W1 fixed jaw extending from the toe, a movable jaw ivotally connected to the toe and extending through the slot, said aw havin recess, a movable handle sectionv pivotsfi mounted within and having its edges housed betweernopposite edges of the fixed handle section, sari movable section having an integral crank ortion provided with a head, a push bar sli ably mounted within the channeled shank and held against lateral dis placement thereby, said push bar having a recess for the reception of said head, and having a head disposed to project into the recess within the movable jaw, and means housed within the handle sections for holding said sections normally in a predetermined relation. A
2. The combination'with a longitudinally channeled shank, a slotted toe atone end thereof, a fixed jaw extending from the toe, a substantially cylindrical, contractible handle at theother end of the shank; of a movable jaw ivotally mounted within the toe and ex tent ing through the slot, said jaw being bowed adjacent the toe, a push bar within and guided by the shank, means operated by the contraction of the handle foractuating the push bar to shift the movable jaw in the direction of the fixed jaw, and resilient means within the handle for holding the same normally extended.
In testimony that I claim'the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
I RICHARD T. BOND.
