GUARDED KNIFE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELsoN HUGHES, residing at Portland, county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guarded Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in guards or shoes for rounded knives and the like and has for its object to provide a device of this character of a very simple and effective construction, which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and which will readily and effectively serveits intended purposes.
In its generic nature, my invention comprises an elongated disk on one or both points of a rounded knife, a portion of which disk forms a guard or shoe for retaining the knife as it passes through the leather and to enable the knife to be carried smoothly and evenly on a line, or beside the pattern with out being allowed to sink into the cutting board or table, thus lessening the strength required to obtain the same results and pre vent the destruction of the cutting board.
With other objects in view than have been heretofore specified, the invention also comprises certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which Will be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out -in the appended claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention as applied for use in connection with a single pointed round knife. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of a double pointed round knife showing my invention applied to both points of the blade. Fig. 3,is an enlarged side elevation of the point of the knife shown in Fig. 2 with the guard attached. Fig. 4, is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a detail view hereinafter referred to.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in Which like letters and numbers of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 designates the knife the blade of which may be of the form shown in Figs. 1 or 2, and to the point of which the guard 1 is secured by any approved manner, such as passing the point through the aperture in the guard and riveting or upsetting the end of the point, as indicated in Fig. 5. The guard 1 may be forged on the blade 1 instead of riveting the same, as shown in Fig. 3, if so desired.
A designates the cutting member which may be the table upon which the leather C, or other material being out is laid, or a suitable cutting board (not shown) may be used.
In the practical application of my invention, the guard 1 is passed under the leather O, thus holding the blade 1 as it is drawn through the leather by the operator and preventing the knife cutting into the cutting board as Well as enabling the same to be guided more accurately along the line of out than with the ordinary knife.
The guard disk 1 is preferably formed of elongated shape, as shown in Fig. 4, and is slightly convexed as at 3*- on either side of the plane containing the peripheral edge 2" of the disk.
Either one, or both of the points of the knife shown in Fig. 2, may be provided with the guard 1 as may be found convenient, thus allowing the operator to do more work with greater ease, less waste and more accuracy than with the knife without the guard.
In my invention the knife 1, where it joins curved down out edges 1 and 2 adjacent the guard, as shown in Fig. 3, to enable the cut to be made easier and better than with the ordinary shaped knife. The doubly curved edges 1 2 are known in the trade as down cutting edges, for the reason that the cutting action while'the knife is being drawn through the leather tends to hold the leather down on the table instead of lifting the same, as is done by an under cut knife. This will be readily apparent by reference to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
While the construction illustrated in the drawings and herein described shows a preferable form of my invention, it is manifest that such construction may be further modified, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.
.with the disk 1, isprovided with doubly What I claim is 1. A guard for rounded knives comprising a disk having a convexed top and bottom and secured to the point of a knife blade, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a knife having a point provided with cutting edges, of a guard disk cooperatively secured to such point,
substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a knife having a point provided with cutting edges, of a guard disk cooperatively secured to such point to lie with lts edge in a plane at right angles to that of the cutting edge of the knife blade, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination with a rounded knife, having a point, of a guard disk secured to such point to lie in a plane at right angles to that containing the knife blade, said knife blade having double cutting edges adjacent the guard disk, substantially as shown and described.
5. A two-edge blade having a pair of doubly curved edges 1"2 combined with a guard 1 secured to the blade adjacent to said cutting edges.
6. A two-edge blade having doubly curved cutting edges 1 -2 combined with a guard l secured to the blade adjacent to said cutting edges and to lie in a plane at right angles to the plane of the blade.
