SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329.019, dated October 27, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES W. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Rippers and Gutters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved implement to be used by seamstresses, tailors, 800., and constitutes a combined ripper and cutter, the object being to provide an improved tool for ripping sewed seams in cloth or other material without danger of cutting the fabric, and for cutting paper patterns and other objects.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in perspective, of a combined ripper and cutter constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear side view, and Fig. 3 an edge view, of the tool, (the handle being removed and Figs. 4, 5, and Bare details.

In the drawings, a is a metallic knife-case having a shank, on which is secured in any suitable-manner the handle I). The case a is made with a knife or cutter chamber between its sides, which chamber is open at the edge, and has a slotted cloth-guard, h, thereon, projecting beyond the circumferential line of the case. One side of the case has a slot, 0, formed in it, and the opposite side has one or several screw-holes, 00, in it in a line with the center of slot 6.

A screw, d, is adapted to pass through the slot e in the side of case a, and enter either one of the holes a: in the opposite side.

A cutter, c, of circular or other form, perforated to let screw d pass through it, is by the latter secured in case a in several different positions, to adapt the tool to various uses, as hereinafter described. The screw d is provided with a shoulder to be forced against the side of the cutter, or otherwise arranged in any well-known manner to hold the cutter, if

desired, so that it will not rotate, or to so Sup port the cutter that it may turn on the screw, as it will if the shoulder is not forced against it, as aforesaid.

The cutter is supported in a central position in the case, as shown in Fig. 1, or so that its edge projects beyond the edge of the case, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, by changingthe position of the screw d from the center hole a." to one on either side of it. WVhen the screw and cutter are in the positions shown in 5 5 Fig. 1, the edge of the cutter is guarded by the edge of the case, excepting at the point thereon which reaches into the cloth-guard h, and

in the Slot of which its edge is exposed.

It is obvious that instead ofmaking the slot e in one side of case a, holes for the screw (1 may be made opposite the holes 00,- but it is more convenient to change the position of the cutter from the center to either side and resecure it when the case is slotted, as described 6 the latter being convenient for some descrip- 7o tions of work. The edges of the cutters c and c are well sharpened all around, and the diameter thereof may be reduced by resharpening. The length of the slot in the guard h permits the thread which is to be cut, as below described, to reach the edge of the cutter.

The manner of using the tool is as follows: For ripping a sewed seam, one side of the fabric is lifted sufficiently to permit of pushing the cloth-guard it between the two parts of the cloth which the point of the guard separates; but the threads of the seam are struck by the edge of the cutter within the slot of the guard and cut off as the tool is pushed along while the cloth is held. When that part of the cutter at the slot in guard h becomes dull from use, the cutter may be turned slightly to bring a sharp part of its edge to the slot.

For using the tool as a rotary cutter for go cutting patterns or cloth, screw d is drawn out from thecenter hole as, and with the cutter moved to one Side, so that the edge of the latter projects beyond the edge of the case, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and 5 t if the cutter is to be allowed to rotate or not, screw cl is accordingly adjusted in one of the side holes x.
