Be it known that I, ISAAC ROSENFELD, of Cambridgeport, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Folding Vizors for Caps and.

Hats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in means for providing hats and caps with a supplemental brim or vizor which may be used when occasion demands, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which may be permanently attached to the hat or cap, so as to form a part thereof, and which is adapted to be folded so that its presence when folded cannot be readilydetected. I accomplish this object by attaching to the hat or cap one or more (preferably two) shades or vizors which are adapted to be folded against the sides thereof, and to be opened so as to form an effective shield for the eyes and face.

Vhile I have shown the invention as applied to an ordinary cap, it will be apparent that the invention may be applied to a hat without modification, and that the word cap in the claims is used alternatively.

.Two shade sections c and d, of stiff but flexible material, such as window-shade holland, are provided at each side of the front of the calp and are arranged to be folded in rectangu ar plaits like the common Chinese folding fan. One side portion of each shade is securely attached by stitches, as indicated at x in Fig. 2, or other suitable means, to the side or head-band c and each shade section extends from the middle of the front of the cap to the middle portion of the side thereof. The opposite side edges of the shades c and d are respectively secured to the sides of flexible stiffening strips e and f, said strips being preferably made of leather or stiffened cloth, corresponding to the material of which thecap is made. The middle portion of each shade is preferably reinforced with a thin strip c', d, of celluloid, or similar material. Said stiffening strips e and f are provided with tabs e', f at their extreme4 ends, which extend a short distance beyond the edges of the shades to which they are respectively attached, and said tabs are each provided with snap buttons g and h which are adapted to engage corresponding fastening studs g and h, mounted on the band a adjacent the middle of the op osite sides of the cap. The opposite endsv of) the stiffening strips c and f from tabs c, f meet at the middle of the front of the cap, and are fastened at this point, preferably by the line of stitches indicated at y in Figs. 3 and 4, said strips being adapted to swing horizontally about this line as a pivot, practically like the pivot of a fan. By swinging said stiffening strips about said line as a center, towards the sides of the cap, the shades will be compactly folded, like an ordinary fan, between said strips and the band a of the cap. When in the folded position the fastener buttons g and h will be pressed onto their respective holding studs g, h', securing said strips in place. In this position the shades will be practically concealed from the ordinary observer, as the strips will be made or covered with a material corresponding to the material of the cap, so that said strips will have the appearance of the ordinary band or strap, usually placed at this point.

When the shades are to be opened or spread, the fasteners g and h will be detached and the stiffening strips e and f swung forwardly, so that they lie side by side, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 5. In order that said strips e and j may be securely held together in this position, and that the joint therebetween may be effectively covered, to prevent the entrance of light therebetween, I preferably attach a cloth flap m to the inner side of one of the strips, as e, which flap is adapted to be folded over the upper edges of said strips e and f, and down against the strip f, where it may be fastened by any convenient means, as the buttons fa. Said flap m is preferably of thesame color and appearance as the shades c and d, so that when the flap is secured in position, as above described, the upper sides of the shades will appear to be continuous.

Inpraetice the shade, when open, will lie upon, and be partly supported by the vizor sothat the whole shade slopes suiiiciently to perform the function of a viZor or a shade for the face and eyes of the wearer to the best advantage.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a cap band, a plaited shade having opposite edge portions between which it is adapted to be folded, one of said edge portions being extended about the band and attached thereto at both ends, and the other edge portion being attached to the band atone end to permit such edge portion to be swung to fold and unfold the shade, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a cap band, a shade extending about the band having opposite edge portions between which the shade is adapted to be folded, means for connecting both ends of each of said edge portions to the band with one edge portion disposed outside the other when the shade is in folded position, the connecting means of one end of the outer end portion being detachable to permit said outer edge portion to be swung to unfold the shade, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a cap band, a shade having opposite edge portions between which it is adapted to be folded, means for connecting one of said edge portions throughout its length to the band about the side thereof, a stiifening strip connected to the other edge portion, means for connecting each end of said strip to the band 'adjacent the corresponding ends of the opposite edge portion to fold the shade therebetween, the connecting means at one end of said strip being detachable to permit the strip to be swung to unfold the shade, substantially as described.

4. In combination with a cap band, a pair of folding shades each connected to the band at one edge about the sides thereof, and means for connecting the opposite edges of said shades when the shades are unfolded, substantially as described.

5. In combination with a cap band, a` pair of oppositely disposed shades adapted to fold against the sides thereof and connected thereto at their inner edges with one end of each of said edges adjacent a point between the shades, and means for connecting the corresponding ends of the outer edges to the band adjacent said point to permit said outer edges to be swung together side by side to provide a continuous shade, substantially as described.

6. In combination with a cap band, a pair of adjacently disposed shades extending about the band and adapted to fold against the sides thereof, said shades being connected l thereto at their inner edges and having supporting strips at their outer edges, and means for fastening said strips together side by side, substantially as described.

7. In combination with a cap band, a pair of adj acently disposed shades extending about the band and adapted to fold against the sides thereof, said shades being connected thereto at their. inner edges and having supporting strips at their outer edges, arranged to be held side by side to make said shades continuous, a flap connected to one of said strips and adapted to be folded over the otherC strip to cover the joint therebetween, and means for fastening said flap to said latter strip, substantially as described.
