BURGLAR-ALARM.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAooB H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Burglar- Alarm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is an improvement in burglar alarms of the character in which a cartridge is exploded by the opening of a door, window-shutter or other like movable closure, and is designed to automatically retract or cock a trigger by the closing of the door and release the trigger when the door is opened and thereby explode the cartridge.

The invention also contemplates means for holding the trigger in retracted position on opening the door, operable with a key from the outside of the door, and means for rendering the alarm altogether inactive when the door is moved to and from a closed position.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary inner face view of a door and inner door casing having my improved burglar alarm applied thereto Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 4 is a section through the casing or frame of the alarm adjacent to the trigger; and Fig. 5 is an edge view of the door.

In the construction of the burglar alarm, I preferably employ a marginal frame or casing 10, of rounding form having ears 1.1, extended at opposite sides for attaching it to a door casing and holding the frame extended from said casing in a horizontal position adj acent to the free-or swinging edge of the door 12. That part of the marginal casing or frame of the alarm adjacent to the door is thickened and provided with a cartridge chamber for receiving a cartridge 13, which is adapted to be exploded by the impact of a trigger 15, the latter being fulcrumed at 16 Within the frame and normally forced in the direction of the cartridge by a spring 17. eter of the frame in order that the free end thereof may be suitably disposed with re spect to the trigger, and its opposite arm passing through the door casing where it is provided with a pin or finger 2O projecting at substantially right-angles thereto through an opening adjacent to the door amb, the finger being of sufficient length to be thrown into the path of the door under the action of the spring of the trigger when the door is opened, as indicated in the dotted outline in Fig. 2. By this construction it will be observed that upon closing the door, the latter will force the finger 20 to one side, which, through the intermediary of the lever 18, will retract the trigger against the tension of the spring from the cartridge chamber, whereupon the trigger will be released and the cartridge exploded when the door is opened.

In order that the occupants of the house may pass through the door from the outside after the alarm has been set, I provide in connection with the door, in addition to the usual lock for locking the same in closed position, a lock 21, which may be operated from the outside of the door, and has its bolt so arranged that when projected it will contact with the expanded end of an arc-shaped slotted slide 22 and carry the upper end of said slide in the path of the trigger and hold the latter in retracted position while the door is open. On again closing the door, the party entering, after turning the key to withdraw the bolt of the lock 21, may again set the alarm by pressing the expanded end of the slide toward the door.

That part of the door which contacts with the finger 20 is in the nature of a movable block 23, located in a groove or slot in the edge of the door, of about twice its width, such that the block when dropped to a depressed position will move out of the path of the finger and permit of the door being moved to and from a closed position without operating the alarm. In order to retain the block on the door and effect its movement to and from operative position, I preferably provide it with vertical pins 24, which are guided in apertures in the top edge of a piece 25 inserted in the edge of the door, the said piece having a recess in its outer face, in which is pivotally supported a cam 26, contacting with the under face of the block and operating to carry it to an elevated position in the path of the finger 20, when turned up,

as illustrated in Fig. 5, and when thrown down, as indicated in dotted outline in this figure, to permit of the block dropping under the action of gravity.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination with a door, a burglar alarm having a trigger adapted to explode a cartridge, and provided with means for automatically retracting the trigger by closing the door.

2. In combination with a door, a burglar alarm having a trigger adapted to explode a cartridge, and provided with means for automatically retracting the trigger by closing the door, and means for locking the trigger in retracted position from'the outside of the door when the alarm is set.

3. In combination with a door, a burglar alarm having a trigger adapted to explode a cartridge, and provided with means for automatically retracting the trigger by closing the door, a device movable in the path of the trigger, and a lock having a bolt for operating said device.

4. In combination with a door having a block in the edge thereof, a burglar alarm having a trigger adapted to explode a cartridge, and provided with means projecting into the path of said block for automatically retracting the trigger by closing the door, and means adapting said block to be moved out of the path of the last mentioned means, whereby the alarm will be rendered inactive.

5. In a burglar alarm, a frame having a cartridge chamber, a trigger fulcrumed within the frame adapted to explode a cartridge in said chamber, a lever operable to retract the trigger from the chamber and hold it in a I retracted position, and a finger for actuating the lever adapted to project into the path of a movable closure.

6. In a burglar alarm, a frame having a cartridge chamber, a trigger fulcrumed on said frame having a spring normally pressing it to the chamber, a lever operable to retract the trigger from the chamber against the tension of the spring, and a slide movable in the path of the trigger for holding it in retracted position.

7. In combination with a door and door casing, a burglar alarm carried by the casing having a device for exploding a cartridge, and means to set the device passing to'the rear of the casing in the path of the door and actuated by the closing of the door.

8. In combination with a door and door casing, a burglar alarm comprising a frame having means for securing it to the casing, a device for exploding a cartridge carried by the frame, a lever, and a finger carried by the lever arranged behind the casing and projecting into the path of the door and automatically operated by the latter to actuate said device.

9. In combination with a door and door casing, a burglar alarm having means carried by the casing for exploding a cartridge when the door is opened, and provided with a de vice for locking said means against movement when the door is opened, and a lock carried by the door having a bolt for actuating said device.

10. In combination with a door, a burglar alarm having means for exploding a cartridge when the door is opened, a slide movable in the path of said means to hold it against movement upon opening the door, and a lock carried by the door having a bolt adapted to actuate the slide when the bolt is projected.

11. In combination with a door having a movable block in the edge thereof, a burglar alarm having means for exploding a cartridge, and means for actuating said exploding means, operated by the door and movable into the path of said block.

12. In combination with a door having a movable block in the edge thereof, a burglar 1 alarmhaving means for exploding a cartridge,

means for actuating said exploding means operated by the door and movable into the path of said block, and a cam for retaining the block in operative position.
