county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania,
have ,mvented certain new and'useful Improvements in Sparking Cut-Outs for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the fol -V lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to contr olling mechanism for internal combustion engines, and
more particularly to improved means for automatically cutting out the sparker current simultaneously with the movement of the sparkin device to extreme retarding position ancf the holding of the engine controllmg valve in inoperative position.
he nvention is fully described in connectionwith the accompanyfn drawing and is spec fically pointed out in t e claims.
Fwure 1 is a side elevation showing the cran r-casing ortion of an internal combustion engine aving my invention applied thereto; a portion of the cam-box being broken away and the cover plate of the oscil-. latmg contact-breaker casing removed. Fig. 2 1s a separate view showing the contact finer and cut-out fulcrum in-idiiierent positions om'Fi 1; and Fig. 3 is agrear' view of the contactreaker casing showing the cut-out lever. 1
The internal combustion engine indicated has a cylinder 1' provided; with intake-and exhaust valves having parallel vertically guided stems 4 and 5 both of which are oper-. ated from the engine crank shaft 6 mounted in the crank casing 7. This construction, as' well as the direct drive connection of the cam shafts 10, 11 and 12 with the main shaft 6; the means for operating the valves from said cam shafts; and the general. arran ement and operation of the sparking mec anism,
with its contact-breaker casing, 22 'rotatably mounted u on the cam shaft 12 and adapted to indepen ently act u on the exhaust valve stem 5 through a sli e-pin 24 and a bell crank 23 ;-form no part of my invention.
The ob'ect of my invention is to rovide an improve construction whereby t e electric sparking circuit will be automatically opened simultaneously with the Factionupon. the
controlling valve which occurs whenfthe con tact breaker. cas ng 221s.; moved to its ex:-
treme spark retardingIf position, I thereby greatly prolonging the e of the batteries, and contact points.
The .breakerrcaslng 22 is provided with an exterior valve operating arm or projection 25 5 with an interiorly projecting contactpomt 30, adjustably fixed 1n the insulated casing wall 31 and 'connected exteriorly to a battery wire '32 as-.usual;- and with a yielding contact finger 33 pivoted at 34 within the casing and adapted to be normally pressed into-and out of contact, midway of its length, with the point SO'during; each turn of-the contact-breaker cam; 21 operating upon its end 35; this. general construction, as well as the mounting of the casing 22 upon the cam shaft 12 and the operation of the same by the rider to vary the timing of the spark and finally hold open the controlling valve of the vention consists in automatically preventing the unnecessary making and breaking of the igniting circuit while the controlling valve is thus held open by the casing 22, by providing a cut-out in said casing whereby the contact engine, being old and well known. My infinger 33 is prevented from being moved into contact with the point30 by the action of the contact-breaker cam; said cut-out consisting as shown of fulcrum-cam 36 rotatably mounted inthe wall of the casing 22, and provided with an exterior lever 37 adapted to be swii ng with the casing into contact with a [If d abutment, for instance the cam-bog on the crank casing, and thereby cause the fulcrum-cam 36' to be turned so that it will project beyond the point 30 and holdthe yielding finger 33 away from the latter notwithstanding the con.- tinued action of the contact-breaker cam upon said finger. This movement of the fulcrum-cam is effected against the tension 10f a spring 38 which normally holds it in retracted position where the finger 33 is free rider. It will bereadily seen that all wastage of the batteries, and unnecessary wear of the contact points is thus automatically prevented by the very, simple and inexpensive to contact with the point 30; and the movepic:
.mechanism described, the specific construction of which may obviously .be modified without departing'from my invention.
What I claim is:
1;; Asparking device for internal combus' tion en es. comprising an oscillatingly mou'nte casing provided with a fixed contact point, a yielding contact-finger adapted normally to be swung into o'ontactwith'said point, and a outout fulcrum" movably mounted in the casing adjacent said point substantially as set forth.
2. 1:" aninternal combustion engine having aeontrolling-valye, operating mechanism therefor, and a contact-breaker cam, an ad}ustable sparking mechanism comprising a. fixed contactpoint, a yielding contact finger operated by said cam, and :1 cutout fulcrum for said finger removably mounted in the casing and provided with an op'e1"atin arm, said controlling valve and out-out fulcrum being simultaneously acted upon by the movement of said casing to extreme spark-retarding position substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
