Y Louis,in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Can Lock and Cover, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to`closures for milkcans and similar containing vessels'` and has for its object to provide a com aratively simple and lnexpensive device ofP this character which forms an air and liquid tight cover for the vessel s'o as to efectually prevent the contents thereof from spilling or leaking at the cover during trans ortation or shipment. lugs 14 seated in the sockets 16 of the ears 15 after which the operator grasps the locking bail by the loop 21 and moves the latter to the position shown in Fig. 1 'of the drawings. As the locking bail or loop is swung to operative position on the trunnions 17 the can faces 20 will engage the lugs 14 and force said lugs within the sockets 16 thus compressing the gasket 10 and forming an air and liquid tight joint between the parts. After the bail has been moved to operative position the shank of the pad-lock is extended through the loop 21 and the slot 23 so as to eifectually prevent an unauthorized person from obtaining access to the contents of the can. y Y
In order to open the can it is merely necessary to remove the lock 24 and then swing the locking bail laterally to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings thus permitting the cover to be detached. from the can by exerting an upward pull on the operating handle 12. It will thus be seen that the loop 2] not only serves as a means for engagement with the pad-lock but also forms an operating handle by means of which the bail may bc moved to operative and inoperative position. If desired, however, the lock may be dispensed with, the can face 20 being relied upon to lock the lugs 14 within the sockets of the supporting ears.
The Vimproved mechanism herein shown and described may be applied to milk cans or other containing vessels of different sizes and shapes and if desired, the reinforcing band of the can may be dispensed with and the locking bail or yoke and its associated parts attached directly to the exterior walls of the vessel. p
From the foregoing descri tion it will bc seen that there is provide an. extremely p simple, inexpensive and efficient device a mirably adapted for the attainment of the ends 1n view.
- Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a containing vessel having vertically disposed ears the free ends of which are bifurcated to form terminal sockets, of a cover extending transversely across and bearing against the top of' thereof bent laterally to form a movable locking member ada )ted to register with the slot in the arm for tire reception of a locking device, said bail being provided with a cam face adapted to engage the lugs when the bail is moved" to operative position.
2. The combination with a containing vessel having enlargements formed thereon and provided with inclined faces, of a cover extending transversely across and bearing against the top of the vessel and provided with laterally extending lugs, ears secured to the vessel at said enlargements and having their upper ends extended above the top of the vessel and bifurcated to form sockets for the reception of the lugs, a locking bail pivotally mounted on the vessel and having its pivoted ends provided with extensions formed withinclined faces adapted to en gage the inclined faces of the enlargements, said bail being provided with cam faces adapted to engage the lugs when the bail is moved to operativo position.
3. The combination with a containing vessel having a reinforcing band secured thereto, of a cover extending transversel)Y across the top of the vessel and having ils lower face provided with an annular seating groove, a gasket seated in said groove, clips secured to the upper face of the cover, a rod journaled in the clips and having its opposite ends extended beyond the peripheral edge of the cover to form lugs, the portion of the rod between the clips being bowed laterally to form an operating handle, vertically disposed ears secured to the reinforcing band and having their upper ends bifurcated to form sockets for the reception of the ears, trunnions extending laterally from the reinforcing band, a locking bail pivotally mounted on the trunnions and having a cam face adapted to engage the lugs when the bail is moved to operative position, enlargements formed on the reinforcing band and provided with inclined faces, a slotted arm extended laterally from the reinforcing band, extensions formed on the pivoted ends of the yoke and having their ends inclined for engagement with the inclined faces of the adjacent enlargements, the closed end of the yoke being bent laterally to form a loop adapted to register with the slot in the arm for the reception of a locking device.
