Description

April 18, 1933. G. A. ROBINSON 1,904,630
TINS, IRON KEGS, AND LIKE METAL CONTAINERS 4 Filed Jan. 28, 1950 Qjig/ y 6 5 6 6 I k j A Patented Apr. 18, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT! OFFICE GILBERT ALAN ROBINSON, or HULL, ENGLAND, ASS-IGNOR 'ro F. ROBINSON AND COMPANY, LIMITED, 015 HULL, ENGLAND TINS, IRON KEGS, AND LIKE METAL CONTAINERS Application filed January 28, 1930, Serial No. 424,012, and in- Great Britain Ianuary. 31,' 19 2 9 This invention relates to tins, iron kegs and like metal containers of the kind fitted with lids of the lever lid type, the chief object being to provide simple and effective means for securing or holding the lid of the container in position.
According to the invention the upper edge or rim of the container is constructed with a comparatively wide external flange portion,
10 the outer circumference or edge of which lies concentric to and at some distance away from the outer circumference or edge of the lid when the latter is applied, and is characterized in that stampings or lugs are passed through slots or openings in the flange and are adapted to be bent over the edge of the lid to secure it in its closed position. The flange portion of the container which may be beaded will by preference be recessed or formed with an annular groove or depression above which the rolled or beaded edge of the lid will lie, so that the distance between the two edges of the flanges on the container and lid will afiord an increased leverage for raising the lid.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be more fully described with reference to and by the aid of the accomp anying drawing; wherein:
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a side elevation and a section of the upper part of the tin, iron keg or like metal container.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of part of Figure 2, showing one form of lid-securing means. V
Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure 3, but illustrating a modified form of the lid-securing means.
Referring to the drawing, the upper edge or rim of the container 1 is constructed with a comparatively wide external flange portion 2, the outer circumference or edge of which lies concentric to and at some distance away from the outer circumference or edge of the lid 3 when the latter is applied. The flange 2 which is formed with a beaded or rolledover edge 4 is recessed or formed with an annular groove or depression as shown, and the rolled or beaded edge 5 of the lid 3 lies above said circular groove or depression when ap plied,'so' that the distance between the two edges or headings 4, 5 on the container 1 and lid 3 afford an increased leverage for raising the lid. The securing or holding means for the lid 3, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, coinprise stampings orlugs 6, passed "through slots or openings 7 in the flange 2'at the up per edge or rim of the container 1,' the upper ends of said stampings or lugs 6 being bent over the edge 5 of the lid 3, to secure the latter in its closed position. The stampings or lugs 6 shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 are of tee-shape so that when applied, the cross-portions of said stampings or lugsj6lie" beneath the flange 2, whilst the vertical links of the tees project through the slots or openings 7 so that they can be readily bent over the lid when applied to lock it in position. In lieu of the stampings or lugs 6 being of tee-shape they may, as '10 shown at Figure 4, consist of plain stampings, and the lower portions may be bent around the beaded edge 4 of the container flange 2, to secure said stampings or lugs 6 in position or afford hinged connections therefor. As shown, in Figures 1 and 2, a pair of oppositely disposed stampings or lugs 6 may be furnished with openings to enable the extremities of a bail or like handle 8 to be fitted thereto for carrying the container 1. In this connection the bail or handle securing lugs. 6, instead of being passed through the flange 2 from below as shown, may be passed through said flange 2 from above and then bent around the beaded edge 4 to afford connections for the ends of the bail or handle 8. i The aforesaid wide levering flange 2 and the stampings or lugs 6 may be applied to straight sided containers or to containers made with either contracted or expanded neck ,9 portions, or tapered containers. Thus, the container 1 may be straight sided as shown in full lines at Figures 1 and 2, or the mouth or open end of the container may be of the type which is corrugated so as to produce a 5 contracted or expanded neck which affords a seating for the flange of the lid, and at the same time allows of the lid being levered off more readily than with the usual type of lidded container. The form of container 1 W having a corrugation to afl'ord a reduced neck is shown in dotted lines at Figures 1 and 2.
I claim 5 1. In combination a container open at the top and having adjacent its upper edge a laterally projecting flange through which are formed a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures, said flange being of concave shape in radial cross section, a lid the diameter of which is substantially the same as the diameter of the circle in which the circumferentially spaced apertures are located, and fastenings extending through the apertures in saidflange and having their upper ends bent over the adjacent edge of the lid and their other ends directly engaging the flange to prevent bodily upward movement through said apertures.
2. In combination, a container opened at the top and having an apertured flange extending outwardly adjacent its upper edge, a lid the marginal edge of which is Within the margin of said flange when applied to the container and fastening members extending upwardly through the apertures,the upper ends of said fastening members being bent laterally into engagement with the lid and the lower portions bent around the edge of the flange to secure them in position and form hinged connections therewith;
GILBERT ALAN ROBINSON.
