Description

EDGAR W. BASSICK, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO TIIE BURNS, SILVER & CO.,
OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
HAND LE OR DRAWE R-PULL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR W. BAssIoK,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles or Drawer-Pulls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to handles or drawer pulls, such as are secured in position. on drawers or doors of articles of furniture and are then equipped with suitable handle devices.
My invention relates to that class of such devices in which a hollow post and rose are used in connection with a threaded shank which latter is passed through a suitable opening in the article of furniture and secured in position by means of any suitable nut or similar device engaging the threaded portion of such shank, and the object of my improvement is to so assemble the shank in position that it will not obstruct the attaching of the handle, but will, on the other hand, afford ample clearance so that any sort of a handle may be connected without likelihood of accidental detachment, while at the same time the device, as a Whole, is rendered exceedingly simple and effective.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction which will be hereinafter fully set forth and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a detail front elevation of the post and rose of my improvement, Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the completed article, Fig. 3 a detail elevation of a post and rose such as I contemplate using in a modified construction of my improved handle or drawer pull, Fig. 4 a sectional elevation of such modified construction, Fig. 5 a front elevation showing my improvement in completed form with a bail handle-attached and used in connection with an ordinary face plate, and Fig. 6 a sectional elevation showing my improvement constructed to receive any ordinary pull such as a ring.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.

improved trimming which are preferably made integral, said plate being bulged or swelled as shown at 3 near the periphery for contact with the bail so that the latter will not strike against the furniture as will be clearly understood. The to of the head is preferably countersunk as s own at 4, and one side of this countersunk portion is perforated as shown at 5, and at opposite sides of this perforation I preferably form notches 6. 7 is a short pin which is threaded externally at its lower end and which extends through this erforation and is provided near the upper end) with fins 8 which fit within the notches 6, said pin being provided with an offset head 9 which fits snugly within the countersunk portion 4.
14 is a ltube which is internally threaded and whose upper portion is screwed to the threaded lower end of the pin 7, while the lower portion of said tube is adapted to receive any suitable headed screw for the purpose of securing the improvement in position on an article of furniture. This pin 7 and tube 14 constitute the element hereinafter referred to as the threaded shank, but it' Will of course be understood that I can, if desired, employ the usual solid integral shank externally threaded at its lower end for en gagement with an ordinary nut in securing the improvement to the article of furniture, and I therefore do not wish to be limited in this respect.
The object of the fins and notches is to prevent the threaded shank from turning, but since the head 9 is offset and snugly fits within the countersunk portion 4 this construc tion alone will prevent this result unless the head should accidentally slip out of the countersink in which instance the fins and notches will keep such shank from turning.
10 is a perforation on the side of the head 1 for the reception of one end of the handle, this perforation being so located that it is as remote as possible from the pin 7, so that the end of the bail or handle may be inserted for a considerable distance within the head thereby enabling said handle to be so attached that it will not be likely to become accidentally detached.
In the construction shown at Fig. 2 the threaded shank is disposed at the side of the inner portion of the post 1 so as to provide a proper clearance for the end of the bail or andle, but I contemplate several ways of accomplishing this result, all of which are mere modifications of my improvement in this respect.
In the construction shown at Fig. 4, I have shown an ordinary solid threadecshank l5 whose upper portion is offset as shown at 11, the head 9 being joined to the top of this offset ortion in precisely the same manner as in t ie instance of the construction shouni at Fig. 2.
There is no difference between the constructions shown at Figs. l and 3 except that in the latter the perforation 5 is slightly different in shape in order to permit the insertion of the offset 11.
In the construction shown at Fig. 6 I have illustrated the manner in which an ordinary ring pull can be utilized in connection with my improvement said ring being shown in dotted lines, the extremities of the ring being sprung within diametrically opposite openings 10 in the post l.
In instances where a face plate is to be used on the article of furniture, I contemplate forming the post and rose integral with said plate, and in Fig. 5 I have shown a face plate 12 with my improvement formed therewith and equipped with the usual form of bail handle 13 whose extremities are properly connected by inserting them within the perforations in the sides of the posts.
Of course, it will be readily understood that the countersinking of the top of the pest and the fitting of the head of the shank snugly within said eountersunk portion provides a very effective finish, but it will be clear that the top of the post may be left perfectly plain and that the head of the threaded shank may rest against the same with no detriment to the mechanical structure of my improvement, and therefore I do not Wish to be limited in this respect.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A handle or drawer pull comprising a post and rose the top of said post being perforated, and a threaded shank extending through said. perforation, the upper part of said shank being offset.
2. A handle or drawer' pull comprising an integral post and rose the top of said post being perforated, and a threaded shank extending through said perforation and having a head eecentrically disposed with respect to its upper end which head rests against the top of the post.
3. A handle or drawer pull comprising an. integral pest and rose the top of said post being perforated at one side, and a threaded shank extending` through said perforation and having an offset upper portion and provided with ahead which rests against the top of the post.
1I. A handle or drawer pull comprising an integral post and rose. the top of said post he ing countersunk and perforated at one side of said eountersunk portion, and a threaded shank extending through said perl'orzuyion and having a head which snugly Viis within said eountersunk portion.
5. A handle or drawer pull comprising an integral post and rese the side of the post having an opening for attachment of a handle while the top of said post is countersunk and perforated, and threaded shank extending down through said perforation and provided with a head which snugly lits within said eountersunk portion, said shank being offset at the point where it is joined to its head.
6. In a handle or drawer pull, the combination with the pest and rose, the former having a perforated top, of a threaded shank composed of a short pin inserted through said perforation and having its lower extremity externally threaded while its upper end is provided with a head which rests against tho top of said post and an internally threaded tubular portion driven on the lower thr .aded end of said pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my siginrture in presence of two witnesses.
