Description

PATENTED JULY 14,-- 1908.
J. ASSEL. HANDLE 0R DRAWER PULL. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 25, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB ASSEL, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BURNS, SILVER & CO.
OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
HANDLE OR DRAWER-PULL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1908.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Serial No. 423,140.
'Pulls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to handles or drawer pulls, such as are secured in osition on the drawers or doors of articles 0 furniture and are then equipped with suitable handle devices.
More particularly myimprovement relates to that class of such trimmings in which a head and escutcheon plate are used in connection with a threaded shank which latter is assembled inside the head and escutcheon in such manner as to be wholly concealed, the device being secured in position on an article of furniture by means of any suitable nut or similar device driven on the threaded portion of such shank.
In the accompanying drawin Figure 1 is a front elevation of the preferred style of my improvementFig. 2 a sectional elevation Fig. 3 a rear elevation of the same-Fig. 4 a rear elevation of a modified form of my improvementFig. 5 a front elevation showing my improvement in completed form with a bail handle attached for use in connection with an ordinary face plate, and Fig. 6 a sectional elevation of another modification of my improvement.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
1 is the head and 2 the escutcheon plate of my improved trimming, which are preferably made integral.
3 is the shank which is threaded at its lower end and is provided at its upper end with any suitable head 4.
5 is a late which is secured in position against t e bottom of the escutcheon by bending the outer edge of the escutcheon beneath the periphery of said late as shown at a, which plate is perforate at its center as shown at 6 and has diametrically opposite notches 7 in the side walls of this perforation through which perforation the shank 3 is inserted before the securing of the plate to the escutcheon, the head 4 of the shank resting against the plate 5 while fins 8 immediately below said head extend within said notches. I prefer to have these fins 8 fit loosely within the notches 7 in order that the shank may have a slight rocking movement so that the trimming may readily adjust itself to irregular surfaces of articles to which it is to be secured, but I do not wish to be limited in this respect since it of course will be obvious that the shank may be tightly fitted to this-plate 5.
Instead of closing in the plate 5 at the periphery of the escutcheon small spurs 9 may be formed integral with the escutcheon and bent beneath this plate as shown at Fig. 4, in which instance the plate 5 would of course be made considerably smaller.
The head 1 is perforated as shown at 10 in order to provide for the insertion of the ends of the usual bail handle 11, and in Fig. 5 I have shown my improved trimming as it appears when such handle is properly secured thereto.
In the construction shown at Fig. 5 where a large face plate 12 is used, the head and escutcheon can be formed integral with the face plate by stamping or casting, and the bottom plate 5 can be secured after the man-v ner shown at Fig. 4.
It is immaterial whether a solid externally threaded shank is used or whether I employ a tubular shank threaded internally, and I have therefore shown at Fig. 6 a tubular shank 13 which is internally threaded and is secured on the end of the threaded shank 3 whereby the trimming may be secured in position by means of an ordinary headed screw driven within the shank, and in this view I have likewise shown the perforations on diametrically o posite sides of the head 1 so that any or inary ull such as a ring pull (shown in dotted ines) may be used.
therefore do not wish to be limited to any Patent is 1. A handle or drawer pull, comprising an integral head and escutcheon, a perforated plate secured to the bottom of the eseutcheon y means of portions cut from the latter at intervals and bent against the bottom of said plate, and a threaded shank provided with a ead and inserted through said perforation.
2. A handle or drawer pull comprising an integral head and escutcheon, a plate centrally perforated and having notches leading into said perforation and secured to the bot tom of said escutcheon by bending portions I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1 of the latter beneath the bottom of said plate, 5
' and a threaded shank having at its upper end a head and provided with fins immediately beneath said head, said shank extending through the perforation 1n the plate with its head resting upon the latter and with the 20 fins extending within said notches.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB ASSEL.
